Linda, since my comment was directed to Classic, I'll leave the credibility of my comment for him to decide. If he considers my information reliable, he may choose to stop using what has become a likeness of you, Linda and your obsession with the LOL acronym. Seems to me that would be in your best interest.

But I mentioned it only as a courtesy to Classic.

Bombing Gravely Injures Iraqi Deputy PM
Updated 8:30 PM ET March 23, 2007

By STEVEN R. HURST and HAMZA HENDAWI

BAGHDAD (AP) - Striking at the Iraqi government's highest-ranking Sunni Arab, a suicide bomber blew himself up among worshippers at the deputy prime minister's home Friday, seriously wounding the leader and killing at least nine people in a security breakdown that shook the image of a calming Baghdad.

Salam Al-Zubaie underwent surgery to remove shrapnel from his abdomen at a U.S.-run hospital. Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, head of the Shiite Muslim-dominated government, said his deputy was in serious but stable condition and wouldn't need treatment abroad "for now."

The bombing, coming just a day after a Katyusha rocket slammed to earth 50 yards from visiting U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, starkly emphasized the continuing chaos in Iraq even after the introduction of thousands more American soldiers and six weeks of an extensive security crackdown in the capital.

Growing U.S. voter disenchantment with the war, now in its fifth year, prompted a narrowly divided House of Representatives to vote Friday to order the withdrawal of combat troops next year in Congress' boldest challenge to Bush administration policy. President Bush said he would veto the measure if it passed the Senate and reached his desk.

An Iraqi military spokesman, Brig. Qassim al-Moussawi, called the sucide bombing an inside job, telling state television that an al-Qaida fighter had infiltrated al-Zubaie's security detachment.

Al-Moussawi offered no details, and repeated calls to his office to verify the claim went unanswered. The Interior Ministry, which oversees Iraq's police forces, said it had no information on that claim.

Al-Maliki aide Mariam Taleb al-Rayes also told al-Sharqiyah television the attacker had "infiltrated" al-Zubaie's inner circle, but did not elaborate. She added that the bomber's car blew up outside the house seconds after he detonated his explosives vest.

The bomber attacked al-Zubaie a day after a statement purportedly posted on the Internet by an al-Qaida umbrella group singled him out as a stooge "to the crusader occupiers."

Hours after the assassination attempt, the same group, the Islamic State in Iraq, claimed responsibility for the bombing and said it was reporting the "good news that our troops were able, with God's will, to target" al-Zubaie.

"We tell the traitors of al-Maliki's infidel government, wait for what will destroy you, you will never be safe, with God's will on the Iraqi soil, as long as we have a blinking eye and a beating heart," said the statement. Its authenticity could not be independently verified.

Harith al-Dhari, head of the Association of Muslim Scholars, a militant Sunni group with suspected links to insurgents, appeared to endorse the attempt on al-Zubaie's life.

"It indicates a huge security failure and a success by the resistance," al-Dhari told al-Jazeera television. "The bigger event here is that the resistance was able to deliver a message to all politicians telling them: 'Don't speak on our behalf.'"

Al-Zubaie's loss would be a blow to the government, but the al-Maliki administration would not be derailed. There is no legal requirement the post be filled by a Sunni Arab _ only an informal agreement among the political parties that formed the current government, and leaders would likely be able to find another Sunni if necessary.

The bomber detonated an explosives vest after weekly prayers in a small mosque attached to al-Zubaie's home near the Foreign Ministry, just north of the capital's heavily guarded Green Zone.

Updated: 52 minutes ago
BAGHDAD - The suicide attack against Iraq’s Sunni deputy prime minister is now seen as an inside job carried out by a member of his own security detail — a distant relative who had been arrested as an insurgent, freed at the official’s request, then hired as a bodyguard, a senior security official and an aide to the victim told The Associated Press on Sunday.

The assassination attempt, at least the third major security breach involving a top politician in four months, prompted Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to order a government-wide security shake up, including plans to hire a foreign company to guard the Green Zone building where parliament meets, the security official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak with reporters.

A suicide attacker came within feet of Deputy Prime Minister Salam al-Zubaie and exploded his vest during a Friday prayer service in the private mosque attached to al-Zubaie home. The Sunni official was seriously wounded and nine people were killed.

U.S. Toll in March Is Twice Iraq Forces
Updated 11:11 PM ET March 31, 2007

By STEVEN R. HURST

BAGHDAD (AP) - The U.S. military death toll in March, the first full month of the security crackdown, was nearly twice that of the Iraqi army, which American and Iraqi officials say is taking the leading role in the latest attempt to curb violence in the capital, surrounding cities and Anbar province, according to figures compiled on Saturday.

The Associated Press count of U.S. military deaths for the month was 81, including a soldier who died from non-combat causes Friday. Figures compiled from officials in the Iraqi ministries of Defense, Health and Interior showed the Iraqi military toll was 44. The Iraqi figures showed that 165 Iraqi police were killed in March. Many of the police serve in paramilitary units.

According to the AP count 3,246 U.S. service members have died in Iraq since the war began in March 2003.

At least 83 American forces died in January and 80 in February, according to the AP tabulation.

The Iraqi figures were gathered from officials who released them on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to give out the numbers.

Additionally, the Iraqi ministry figures listed 1,872 Iraqi civilian deaths for the month, about 300 more than the AP tabulation, which is mainly gathered from daily police reports nationwide.

The civilian death toll for the month was down significantly from 2,172 in December, the highest month casualty figure since the AP began keeping records of civilian deaths in April 2005.

However, the number of civilians killed in March was in the same range as for the first two months of this year; 1,604 in January and 1,552 in February, according to the AP count.

Nearly a third of the Iraqi civilian deaths, more than 500 people, where killed in three big bomb attacks in the last week of the month and revenge killings of Sunni men in Tal Afar the night after a Shiite market was bomb in the northwest Iraqi city.

McCain: Americans Don't See Iraq's Gains

By KIM GAMEL
Associated Press Writer
April 1, 2007, 9:45 AM EDT

BAGHDAD -- A Republican congressional delegation led by Sen. John McCain on Sunday blasted Democratic efforts to impose a deadline for withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq, and McCain charged that the American people were not getting a "full picture" of progress in the security crackdown in the capital.

McCain, who is seeking the Republican presidential nomination, was combative during a press conference in the military's media center in the heavily guard Green Zone, and responded testily to a question about public remarks he had made in the United States last week that it was safe to walk some Baghdad streets.

"The American people are not getting the full picture of what's happening here. They're not getting the full picture of the drop in murders, the establishment of security outposts throughout the city, the situation in Anbar province, the deployment of additional Iraqi brigades which are performing well, and other signs of progress having been made," said McCain.

He said the delegation drove from Baghdad's airport to the center of the city and cited that as proof that security was improving in the capital.

VIP's normally make the trip by helicopter.

The delegation was accompanied by heavily armed U.S. troops throughout the periods when they were not in the Green Zone, site of the U.S. Embassy and Iraqi government. They traveled in armored military vehicles under heavy guard.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican, blasted fellow members of congress, Democrats in particular, who have passed spending legislation that would set deadlines for pulling U.S. forces out of Iraq. He said U.S. President George W. Bush would veto the measures and should.

"It will be a huge mistake to set a deadline. It (the U.S. troop surge) is working. We are doing now what we should have done three years ago. ... The Iraqi people want their own destiny but they don't have the capabilities yet," he said.

The delegation, which also included Rep. Mike Pence, a Republican from Indiana, and Rep. Rick Renzi, an Arizona Republican, spoke glowingly of an hour they spent in the Bab al-Sharqi market which was hit by a suicide bomber on Jan. 22.
At least 88 people died in the attack.

The congressmen said they were impressed with the resilience and warmth of the Iraqi people, some of whom they said would not take their money for souvenirs the delegation bought.
