Yes I would leave the buyer a negative. I dont know what kind of "screw up" you are talking about, but if I offered to send a replacement, or refund and the buyer still gives me a neg, then I would be forced to leave the buyer one.

Then you hold feedback as hostage, as extortion. You are a retaliator. But at least you are honest, while others rationalize it.

cariad......if ubb doesn't work this time, I give up!

It has never come up before... but I imagine that in that situation, I'd either refrain from leaving any feedback OR dwell on leaving a Neutral or even a Posative similar to the following:

"Quick Pay but was NOT consolable with fair resolution. Thanx Anyway!"

cariad: I don't think there is such a thing as a justifiable neg against me because I correct my mistakes. And a corrected mistake deserves no worse than a neutral.

When a person returns an item because I misdescribed it, I refund their money including the cost of shipping both ways. A neg isn't justified in this case and the buyer gets a positive if they've handled their end of the deal well.

If I accidentally send the wrong item to someone, I send them the correct merchandise and an addressed mailer with the correct postage to send the incorrect merchandise back to me or the person who actually won it. A neg isn't justified in this case and the buyer gets a positive if they've handled their end of the deal well.

So, I guess the only justifiable neg would be one where the problem couldn't be corrected and, off hand, I can't think of such a problem.

I leave feedback when they have paid. I HATE it well other sellers DON'T! It seems REALLY unfair to the buyer to not leave feedback. I can understand withholding feedback until the check clears and such - but any other reason seem shady!

I was a buyer of a doll and I made immediate payment via PayPal (please NO PayPal comments - I love it and have had NO PROBLEMS with them). I emailed the seller and asked that she NOT ship the item until after October 6th because I would be out of town and the weather forcast said POURING RAIN! She agreed to holding the item until the 6th and then ship.

I went out of town and when I returned - there was the box! Soaked and trashed! She had shipped on the FOURTH of October and not after the SIXTH! I emailed her right away and I told her I was REALLY MAD! Why make a promise if you had no intention of keeping it.

The reason I am telling you this story is this - I gave that seller a negative feedback and then the seller gave me a negative feedback! What did I do? I honored my part of the deal! I bid, I paid - promptly and I contacted my seller ASAP.

Thank God that ebay offers a "response" section in the feedback process. My "response" to her neg was - "Seller agreed to ship after 10/6 seller shipped 10/4 bad seller!"

This was EXCTREMELY UNFAIR! I was treated like crap - and this seller withheld feedback until I would leave feedback! NOT A FAIR SELLER.

All I know is this - I am responsible for my actions only! I do not want to be known as a creepy person by others - I want to be a good person for myself!

When a buyer pays I leave feedback - their part of the deal has been completed!

Thanks to the above poster for an easy example of a mistake that can never be corrected to the satisfaction of the buyer.

The doll was one-of-a-kind, super rare and had special meaning to this buyer.....refund all you want.....apologize all you want.....this buyer may not find another one in her lifetime.... and it was ruined because I forgot to follow through on what I was asked. If I were the seller in that situation, I would feel I didn't fulfill my part of the transaction and the neg I got was justified in the buyer's mind and I would still leave a positive for her.

Cariad: OK, that would be a justifiable neg. In which case I would leave a positive and just leave an appropriate response to the neg.

What would an appropriate response be to neg?

And in that case, if I were buying, your response to that neg and the fact that you then left a positive would tell me more about you and your business practices than 100 "Great seller, asset to ebay"s ever could. You would go to the top of my bookmark, buy from, list.

for me it would be something like "I'm very sorry that I made a mistake, gave refund, but couldn't replace item "

An appropriate response to that neg would be to admit my mistake and give an indication of what I did to try to correct it.

I think just admitting a mistake would impress a lot of potential buyers. And, while my efforts to correct the mistake wasn't enough for the buyer, a potential bidder might say, "I'd be happy with that effort".

In case you ever wondered why some sellers don't post feedback upon receipt of payment, click here:

to read about a buyer who is unhappy with his purchase before he has even received the item.

I use the AuctionWatch Post Mgmt program so I always leave feedback after I ship the item. This way everything happens at once, I tell the bidder its been shipped and updated their feedback all at the same time.

Most of the time I leave feedback when I receive payment. Sometimes I leave feedback when I ship. There are times that I wait either until the buyer notifies (either through email or feedback) that they are satisfied. If they don't notify me within a reasonable amount of time I go ahead and leave one.

It is up to the seller.

When I was a novus buyer I would leave feedback. Then I wised up and got tired of sellers not leaving one for me. So I wait until the seller leaves one for me. There were many times when they didn't and I didn't. Sometimes I do leave one for the seller before they do, I want to "suck up" in hopes they will be "friendly" with the other purchases. I do leave feedback for a seller when I am very impressed with the transaction even though I "know" I won't get on in return.

Sometimes sellers surprise me when out of the blue (in the old'n days many months later) a feedback showed up.

Overall in my opinion, sellers need to leave feedback first. I just hate it when my customers leave feedback for me before I leave one for them......

As a seller I would like the buyers to leave one for me but what can I do if they don't. In my opinion to force buyers to leave feedback would be very unwise.

Everyone does things differently. No one is better than the other just different.

Another reason for not posting feedback immediately upon receipt of payment:
