I sent a brief email to Hotmail but got no response. Unfortunately I've been interviewing for a ton of jobs over the past week and I just don't have the energy to email again and give them the complete rundown on what happened. It's on my to-do list next week when I'm free.
Meanwhile I've stopped using my Hotmail accounts completely and have signed up with another free service (hopefully one with less of a bad rep). And I changed all my passwords to unique ones.
To the person who wanted me to e-mail: you can email me at [email protected] if you need to get in touch.

zapped101,
I know your post was just trying to be helpful but outlining what you have seen as directions on how to harvest passwords goes beyond our Community Guidelines.
Thanks for your cooperation in not posting the same information again,

brighid868,
Thank you for sharing this! I have now changed all my passwords to unique ones and am now considering closing my hotmail account.

zapped101,
I did read your entire post and realize the email addy was not a real one but did think there was enough information provided to assist an unscrupulous person.
Feel free to post the essence of your message, just leave out the directions, that's all I am asking.

" While it may be a pain, I never use the same password twice. Yeah, that makes for a lot of passwords, but EBay, Yahoo, my Bank, PayPal, etc, I use a different password on all services. I've got 2 pages of passwords written down filed away. "
Gee, I hope nobody ever finds that list. That's not very secure.

I'm wondering if that Microsoft Hacker thing had something to do with your Hotmail password being breached. I know if I was Microsoft I sure wouldn't be advertising that everyone's passwords were now hackers in the possession of hackers!
I have emailed CNET NEWS this story.
If indeed Paypal is being hacked as well there could be a link there because so many people use Paypal and Hotmail.

One alternative to coming up with a different password for each site would be a variation of the same password. For instance: if my regular password was "whatever", on ebay I would use "whatever4"(password plus number of letters in ebay). For AuctionWatch I would use "whatever12", for Amazon it would be "whatever6". This is a relatively simple example, but it shouldn't be hard to come up with a less obvious but still easy to remember system.
