PCalton,
I have not attacked you. You did make the statements that snail mail is to slow, but if that snail mail brings you a M/O or C/Ck then its OK and not slow. So tell me the differance. If you don't want to take checks that is fine with me. Like I said, when it says in the TOS "no personal checks" I do send a email stating I only pay with a check,"PERSONAL CHECK" and if you return with a reply that says NO, I will not bid on your item. Your loss, not mine as I have found that in time the same item will show up.

Granted, snail mail delivers checks, money orders and cashier's checks at the same speed. However, money orders and cashier's checks are ready to cash for green. Checks, on the other hand can only be deposited and cashed in my account against my funds. Checks clearing through my banks can take up to 2 weeks, to me that is much slower than what I prefer. Again, if a customer doesn't mind the wait, I will accept their check.
I do not currently say "NO CHECKS." I use to do that but not now. I have tried to explain here that my listings currently say "If you pay by check, expect up to 30 days delivery."
I do not turn down checks and any bidder who only pays by check is welcome to buy buy buy my stuff, but delivery will be delayed.
I understand that some folks would rather not wait and may choose to shop elsewhere. That is my bullet to bite. Ok, I may loose a customer, but at least I have lost a lot less in the past 3 years on bounced checks.

PCalton,
Im a Old Retired guy that only buys parts and big boy toys on ebay, might try to sell a few things that I don't need anymore for my play toys, but as a guy that is retired from the business world, I now see where you are at with M/O, C/Ck and personal checks and I really don't think we better go all the way there. As for checks having to be cashed against your funds, that is true and that is as far as I will go with that remark. The other being turned into cash with no problem, well I understand and wish not to go there either.
This entire subject was over accepting a check from a buyer that might not have read the TOS as many buyers don't do. I asked if the persons feedback was checked and still no reply. Instead of making a big deal about it with nasty e-mails from both the seller and buyer over a check, I really feel it could have been addressed a lot better. I have read on AW in the past all the complaints of the bidders not paying and also not bidding. Well if you want to sell, you need bidders, with out them you have nothing except a bill from e-bay for listing the stuff. The sellers can be just as bad as the buyers so if you can't work with them, give it up. You and I know that 30 days is way to long to hold shipping for a check. 10 working days is long enough and 30 is just punishment for them sending a check. If you even said you would accept my check with a waiting time of 30 days, I would not buy at all.
Your calling what I do as [b]punishment[/b/ is evidence that you not getting it or that you persist in attacking me.
Please understand that I do not hold shipping 30 days...that is Not what I said or tell my customers.
I did not say that, I did not say that.
Please read again objectively...
I say "expect up to 30 days delivery."
I figure up to 7 days for the check to get in my hand, then I deposit the check and put the auction information in a file dated 10 days from the deposit, then 10 - 14 days later (depending on weekends and holidays) the file is opened and if there has not been a charge back for that buyer we ship, then up to 7 days for the package to arrive.
I have had charge backs appear as long as 14 days after the deposit.
Usually, it takes about 20 days for the entire process, but I say 30 days in case the mail is slow. Again, if 30 days delivery is too long they can pay another way.
I'm not trying to be fair, I'm trying to keep from taking more losses on bounced checks.
I am NOT looking for customers here in these discussions. Whether you would want to buy from me is the furthest thing from my mind.
I have been selling online for 3 years and have had about 30,000 completed transactions, and I'm still learning.
I have learned many things the hard way and share in these discussions in hopes that others may gain from my experience.
If what I share here does not fit for you, then let it fall by the wayside.

PCalton,
Again, I have not attacked you so stop with that remark. Im trying to make my point here that if you say that to expect up to 30 days, to me the buyer, you are trying to scare me into running to the post office and get you cash. Now, as a buyer I would expect you to say that the item will be held for 10 working days from the day you receive my check. I would also say that you will receive a quick email when the check arrives, and the item will be sent 10 working days after that if the check clears and another short email would be sent at the same time. Yes it could take up to 30 days, but not likely. I buy parts for one of my cars 2 states over and if I get the order in by noon time, I get it the next day UPS. I have been On e-bay for 2 years as a buyer only and have never had to wait 30 days even with stuff being shipped from the west coast.
30,000 items and your still learning???? Why are you so intent on giving me your selling record. I have been selling for 45 years, so what???? Do you think I just got off the BOAT yesterday?????????
Next you will say that you don't have the time to send every buyer a e-mail when their personal check arrives, or when the item is shipped, but you have the time to spend the time here sparring with me.

lqsquarf ~ ROTFL big time here. Thanks for that great post. Gheesh, I'm gasping for breath laughing, my eyes are running and I am choking. Could it be possible I am allergic to humor?
Seriously, on the subject of accepting checks, I don't get many altho I do accept them. Mostly I get paypal and MOs. On the ones I have gotten, I have been successful in finding the toll free numbers for the bank. Twice it was actually on the check itself. I call the bank, tell them why I am calling, give them all the info (buyer name, check amount, etc) and ask if there are sufficient funds to cover the check. The banks have always been very cooperative in giving me info. Only once did a bank tell me not to deposit the check but they also said to wait a week due to the person's "pattern of deposit". There may be banks that cannot be reached by an 800 number but I haven't come across any yet. If it is a small bank, I generally can find the 800 number for the "main branch". It has worked for me, but I haven't had to do it much. It is the darn bank fees I want to avoid. I also see a "red flag" on a check if it is ~ like #101 or #102. I noticed that some sellers will only take checks if the check number is #several thousand (i.e., #2359). The higher the number, the older and more established the account. I realize that some sellers have had so many bad experiences they just do not want checks. When I see a seller with TOS like that I realize why they are doing it and I respect that...will definitely still buy if I want the item.
should end here and ignore the OTs, but my discipline is low at the moment...long day. Don't want to disappoint the lurkers just awaitin to pounce again...he he
Greg, I do sympathize with your violent allergic reactions. I get them that bad from trees, shrubs, pine, fall leaves, etc and I live in the country! I actually need to use a Pulmo Aide at certain times of the year. It is not funny..it is very painful and I am old so it can be dangerous re my heart. Altho Bassicbrian's post is true....right on target. Medicine is not an exact science and allergists the least exact..a good one admits it. And I am many years of living proof to that.
auntieb, you lost me....one post: you will not buy from a seller that is not smoke free. Another post: if you buy drapes or pillows that are not washable, then you are stuck. HUH?
and I am not grumpy....check my feedback...I'm a sweetheart
just doin' what you're doin'...stating my opinions..do you really mean it is not allowed and go on the attack if it does not agree with yours? Just a little confused here
you needn't further 'splain yourself to me...I don't usually bother myself cause who cares? Told you I am not uptight...just taking a break here..now back to work.

I think many on this board can realize that I have only tried to share my experience. I have tried to honestly and tactfully Defended my right to make decisions about my terms of service and expressed hope that anyone can benefit from my experience with Internet sales. My problems with taking checks have been extensive and I have found some solutions that work for me. I have tried to give my reasons and background of why my terms are the way they are and trust that others will be able to filter what fits or doesn't fit for them. If anyone feels or thinks I have been out of line in these discussions, then I sincerely apologize.
