Yeah, spock, I've been leaning in that same direction today...

I think one of the first things I'll do is to uninstall all the Symantec stuff and re-install it.

I have been using Win2000 Pro for over a year now and its the best OS Windows has came out with to date. Its fast, it reliable and it rarely crashes on me.

Thanks, bp! I'm still thinking that I want to install it. I have a copy on the way. But I'm going to make sure I've gone through everything first and will, hopefully, find out all the things I need to do in order to install the new op system...This will be my first time as Win98 came with my computer. I think I'm learning more stuff about computers than I ever wanted to....

That Yahoo toolbar is Yahoo Companion. Close IE and remove the program in the Add/Remove program control panel. You can always reinstall it later in about two minutes.

I already checked that - first thing I did was try and find anything labeled Yahoo under my programs. I had previously used Bluelight. When I uninstalled Bluelight, it left this bar behind. Currently, I do not have anything related to Yahoo under my program option.

I know there is still a directory for Yahoo on my hard drive. However, I am afraid to delete it until I can somehow remove that bar from IE.

By the way, the bar only comes on when I am online. If I start IE without being online, the bar does not show up.

Any other suggestion?

YES you should figure out the problem B4 you try & upgrade!

HP support for win 2K is pretty bad from what I hear?

I still say to check for a virus on the HD... Some times a reformat doesn't even get rid of it & you need to do a LLF & remap the sectors.

Do you have a virus scanner installed? Have you checked for one?

BTW mrspock: Win2K is a HUGE jump over 98!
I am not a win2K ONLY kinda person & I do think win98 was a good OS... Win2K is a GREAT OS!
Trust me I usually install both on a new box when I overclock... Win2K just beats the pants of 98 for stability every time!!
Right now I am runnin a PIII 700Mhz CPU at 1050Mhz(150Mhz FSB) on Win2k... With win98 I can't boot over 980Mhz & it's not really stable till I go down to 930Mhz(133Mhz FSB)!
There are some other factors that go into it but to lose 10% while running win98 is just not worth it.

Cheers

I think we would both agree that installing win 2000 is not going to solve sharkbabys problems and that they should be addressed before attemptimg the upgrade.

I don't beilive i said it wasn't a superior OS (look at my first response)
most of us though are not overclocking or gaming. I still contend for using ms office ie explorer quickbooks ect you will see very little difference with win 2000 and in my opion not enough difference to justify the time to upgrade or the $$$$
I use 98 on two boxs 2000 on another and I dont see enough of a advantage to install 2000 on the other two
98 can be a fairly stable OS if problems are dealt with and the problems sharkbaby had are not inherent to 98.
a porsche is great for road rallys but a civic will get you to the grocery store just fine

Yeah, I have all the Norton's 2001 stuff and I'm clean...I just uninstalled the SystemWorks AND the Firewall, so we'll see if the BestBuy guy was correct in deducing that there was probably a bad file somewhere in the Norton's stuff that was causing my fatal exception probs...

Was going to work on launching a bunch of auctions, as this is where I get the fatal exception probs, then I saw that we have a free list day tomorrow. D'oh!

Am chomping at the bit to find out if the problem still exists so I am going to do a couple of listings & re-listings on ebay....

Stress level rising already...

One interesting update on my (I know, totally boring!) saga of the fatal exception problems:

Last night I uninstalled and re-installed all my Norton's products. This morning I took quite a few pics for new listings and uploaded them to my pic hosting/auction tools site. I was, for the first time in a long time, able to upload a number of pics at one time without getting thrown offline.

You see, for some time (while I was still using AW and then even when I started using another service) I could only upload one, maybe two on a good day, pics at a time. If I tried to do a bunch at once I would usually either get thrown off the internet or just get that "this screen cannot be displayed" (sic) screen and no uploads would happen. So I figured out on my own that if I disabled my Firewall I could upload all I wanted. Then I could just go back & enable it again. They didn't upload particularly quickly but they DID upload. Now I have just uploaded several pics and it took MERE SECONDS as well without a hitch.

It seems related, but who knows! As we all know I'm no expert in the area of computers.

Did a couple of relistings yesterday with no prob. Today am planning on several listings, so we'll see......

Thanks for listening & for everybody's help!

Although it is a giant pain, I'd save all your files and do a complete reinstall of everything. I've done this more than once and it resulted in much better performance. There are times when the operating system just becomes too corrupted to perform properly.

Thanks, mballai, I'm beginning to realize that you are right about that!

Its a good idea to uninstall programs that you do not use. Make sure when asked "Removed Shared File", answer NO.

Also, if you system tray program that you don't use like MSN Messenger, RealPlayer, etc, disable them. They take up system resources and you'll get better performance without them.

For those pesky programs you just can't stop from loading, ZdNet has a great program called "StartUp Cop" which works in all Windows OS:

MrSpock: My point is not about the speed but the stability of Win2K!
Granted & I agree that win98 is just fine & NO you will not see much of a diff in the way programs run.
It is what is going on in the backround that brings win2K ahead... It is MUCH better at multitasking & managing the system resources.

The point of my overclocking is not to get a FAST game box or anything like that... I like to have a responsive machine! When I click the button I like it to go!
However you can go as fast as you like but if it's not stable... it's not worth a dime!
That is when you see the advantages of Win2K.

Actually sun818 has the best point about the system resources.
DO NOT have anything running that you don't need!

Cheers

Thanks, sun & krytek! I'm duly noting your advice! As soon as it cools off upstairs I'm going back in to check out some more stuff to make sure things are running as efficiently as possible...

As for having all this extra crap in the background, I did learn early on to curtail that. Makes a HUGE dif in performance!
