enough with the alliteration! get to ye ole

nitty-gritty!

Received this electronic missive from my friends @ PaySmell...listen up kiddies :

"Dear PayPal Seller,

Effective July 14, 2001, PayPal will introduce two pricing categories for our Premier and Business accounts. New members and members with low sales volume will be assessed the Standard Rate of 2.9% + 30¢ for receiving transactions. Members in good standing, such as yourself, who have been with PayPal for at least three months and have received an average of over $1,000 per month will qualify for the Merchant Rate of 2.2% + 30¢.

Based on your transaction volume and the length of time you've had an account with us, we are pleased to inform you in advance that you have qualified for the lower Merchant Rate. This means your transactions will continue to be assessed just 2.2% + 30¢ for receiving payments, and sending money to others remains free. "

Did fees just gu UP again???

Feels like deja-vu all over again!

OMG! I cannot believe this. That's it! I am officially done! I have put up with their crap all this time - but a 3% fee plus 30 cents is just out of hand for someone like me with most sales being about 10 bucks or less. Enough! And who's to say this is the last increase?? Didn't the new one affecting sales under $15 just go into effect? Argh!

(typo)

??? I got one too and it reads like they're lowering my rate, but I checked a week ago and I was already paying the 2.2%... so I guess in PPspeak it's an increase for new members...

edited for wrong math...

I haven't been running many auctions lately so haven't had to worry about receiving money through PayPal. I went to PayPal and they don't say anything about the fee going from 2.2% to 2.9% (+ 30 cents) for low-volume users.

Well, since I have a Citibank Mastercard already, I went ahead and signed up for c2it. I also added a dollar to my regular shipping charges and offered a dollar discount for people paying via c2it or check/money order.

Just for amusement, here's the current PayPal fee structure...

Account Type Fee
PayPal Premier 2.2% + 30¢
Billpoint Standard 3% + 35¢
Billpoint Merchant 2.25% + 35¢
Average Merchant starts at 2.5% + 30¢ + setup and monthly fees
CC Now 9%

New PayPal Standard 2.9% + 30¢

By the way, if I read it correctly, since I have a Citibank Mastercard, it will cost me one percent to send money to someone. Let's see - on a $20.00 purchase, it'll cost me 20 cents. It would cost the seller 88 cents to accept it via PayPal.

I just got that email too.. Makes for a VERY interesting comparison:

Paypal Merchant 2.2% + $.30
Billpoint Merchant 2.25% + $.35 (CC)

Paypal Standard 2.9% + $.30
Billpoint Standard 3.0% + $.35 (CC)

They have priced themselves JUST below Billpoint - however Billpoint has a lower fee for electronic check, and flat 35 cents for under $15 transactions...

They are becoming VERY even with each other on a fee basis....

Could someone tell me the difference between Billpoint Merchant and Billpoint Standard? In other words, what do you have to do to qualify for the Merchant account with Billpoint?

Nevermind - forget that last question because I'm sure I won't qualify.

I am going to drop PayPal for Billpoint, though - partly because I can't take all this crap anymore, and partly because of what katiyana just said: Billpoint has a lower fee for electronic check, and flat 35 cents for under $15 transactions...

I officially dropped them 2 weeks ago, and started taking personal checks again. So now it's c2it, PayDirect, Money Orders, Cashier's Checks, and Personal Checks.

Still don't know if I will drop my holding period for personal checks yet though.

I give PayPal less than a year before they go belly up. They are slowly driving their base away, and then making up for it with higher fees.

You know how it goes: Raise fees, drive away users. Raise fees again to make up for less volume, drive away more users. Raise fees yet again.....

You get the picture.

Soon it will be just one guy in Montana with an open account, griping about his 99.9% Paypal fees for each transaction....

No offense to all of you in Montana.

I didn't buy into to it back when they where tossing $10.00 bills around like candy, and ya'll where having a party.

I didn't buy into to it when they barked always free, we make our money on float and got flamed for telling people the other shoe is going to fall.

I still ain't buying into it. Keep those checks and money orders coming.

nefish,

Don't assume that. I'm not shooting star volume but I have the BP merchant account rate. Give you the same advice I give my daughter.."ask..all they can do is say no & you've lost nothing but might gain a lot".

Just noticed PP has granted me the all hallowed "merchant" status despite us having run very few auction the last few months due to being gone so often w/my daughter training.

So much for their guidelines about the monthly amount. I have the feeling, if you're breathing, that's all you'll need to qualify for merchant status.

How do you like that? PayPal slams sellers with another surreptitious fee increase, right about the same time the Postal service also raises rates!

I'd suggest we all place clear notes in all of our auctions we ain't taking no stinking PayPal or BillPoint with their 3+% fees no more!!! For electronic payments use the Yahoo PayDirect service that's FREEEEEEEEEE for everyone!

Luckily Gegy will be rolling out its GegyPay service which is now cheaper than BOTH BillPoint and PayPal for most transactions (BillPoint is cheaper for $15 and under transactions and electronic checks, but you lose your money with no recourse in the event of a chargeback). The GegyPay fee rate is an across the board 2.2% + 30 cents on every transaction. We'll soon have a 2nd option to PayDirect!

Just signed up for Paydirect. Now, the question is this: What % of your buyers are using it? If it wasnt for these boards, I would have never heard of Paydirect. Will put the Paydirect logo in my next batch of auctions and see how it goes...

You have to sell your users on signing up and using PayDirect. Most probably don't know it exists or how to go about signing up (sign up for a free Yahoo account, access the PayDirect page, enter address and CC info and BAMMMM you're set to pay!). Yahoo doesn't promote it well. Explain the onerous 3+% fee charged by BillPoint and PayPal and it shouldn't be a tough sell.

Hmmm....Continue paying 1.75% at Billpoint. OR, pay PayPal 2.9%....?

I don't think so!

Last straw. I'm gettin' out as soon as my current auctions are gone. You could go anywhere and pay less than 2.9%. I don't do over $1,000 a month at PayPal anymore so adios!

might also want to try out Achex.com for eletronic check payments, it currently free to use and I've accepted it for a while now and it works rather well.

Ya know, they are really sticking it to the small time seller. Most of my auctions end in the $1-$2 range. If Ebay takes their .30 and Paypal takes their 32.9 cents, hells bells I don't even make a profit! That NO PAYPAL logo I saved from the threads awhile back will sure come in handy. In fact I've already inserted it in todays auctions.

I got the notice last night that due to the changes that I currently only qualify for the standard account. Billpoint gave me a merchant account, but the risk of chargeback then exsists.

I have two paypal accounts, one personal and one premier, and I think I am gonna close the premier and just start insisting on non credit card purchases only threw paypal. And offer Paydirect for those that do need or insist on using a CC.

Ok thats until they eliminate personal accounts with Paypal alltogether.

I wouldn't have thought I qualified for either but I have Merchant status with both Billpoint and Paypal. With Paypal preferred the fees are manageable - but now I'm having problems with Billpoint.

Beyond the Logo Insertion, they actually suspended my account for a few days - I didn't realize it until I went to invoice a buyer who requested Billpoint (which is how I use it). And couldn't send an invoice! Instead they paid via Paypal because it was available and they wanted to make payment NOW.

Paydirect - only have had 1 transaction with them and it was a Yahoo item... Funds took a LONG time to be transferred to my account but it did make it.

My plan is going to be to push Billpoint over Paypal in my EOA notices for items under $15 or if they wish to use electronic check to save fees... but will continue to offer 4 online payment services - BIllpoint, Paypal, Bidpay, and Paydirect...

Sorry I can't take credit for it, someone else on the boards made it up. I just kept it on my hard drive for just this type of occasion. I won't be taking Paypal for my small time auctions that I run on this ID, but will still take it for my clothing auctions if folks insist.

Yeah, I don't want to fight with people either over PayPal but there has to be a way to get our point across that we don't want it. Hey maybe I'll Neg everyone who pays me with PayPal! That'll teach em!
