tootsiepop, yes, and it was gruesome. I could hardly believe it. I told her what I thought about it, and she overnighted me a postal money order the next day. The dishes were just covered in some kind of greasy, funky stuff. I am still not over that. Heather

Since I am in the medical profession in RL, I have a few friends in the Supply dept. of our largest hospital. They save me the really good clean boxes, styrofoam blocks (some are the really cool wrapped ones ), and other stuff.

I also buy the cheaper zip lock baggies and clear shipping tape in bulk. I usually don't charge my customers for packaging, unless it's something out of the ordinary. I also try to use Priority Mail as much as possible.

Tim

ps...... I also got a package one time in a "inside out" priority box, wrapped in "inside out" christmas paper!

It wasn't pretty, and it sure was illegal, but it worked.....

LAIOCHKA----How are you getting Priority Mail to print your return address on your boxes for you prior to them shipping out your replies.....I would be interested in a link for this if you can provide it. I order online for Priority also and have somehow missed this option. Thanks!

Here's another vote against newspapers as packing material. They are such a mess! Plain newsprint is okay, but I prefer peanuts or bubble wrap for anything that is fragile. I try to reuse as much as I can, as long as the material is clean and in good shape. I have a large trash can filled with good peanuts from things we've received, and those get recycled into my outgoing packages. I save heavy cardboard boxes as well, in useful sizes.

I love the dollar stores, just like DMan. I always get my tissue paper there, along with other necessities. They are a lot cheaper than any office supply place I've found...if they have what you need.

Been using newspaper for 3 1/2 years now...have lots of praise on the great packaging. Many, many glass items shipped with none broken...including several 2ft tall , heavy art glass vases.

Its all in the technique

Someone I know from the auctions had bought a box of kitchenware from the usps auctions and some of the knives had dried blood on them and had what appeared to be leeches. She freaked out. I'd never buy from them.

When I ship my items, I make sure they're as clean as possible.

I don't use newspaper; I usually throw that out as soon as I'm done reading them. I refuse to deal with breakables if I can at all help it. I'm just so unlucky that I could have it quadrupled boxed and it would get broken.

I've received glass in the mail before just thrown in a box with nothing protecting it and it arrived without a mark on it. I've also received a coffee mug before shipped in an extra large envelope that was stretched out to accomodate it. It arrived in perfect shape. I've never received broken glass in the mail.

I had an old employer that would shred all his junk mail for packaging material. We all get enough these days to do that. If that isn't recycling, what is? If you are like most of us, you will have bags of shredded paper which can be packed down so your item doesn't shift in transit.

For those who like the feel & weight of newspaper but don't like the mess, most newspapers will sell their "end of rolls" of paper. These are rolls where there's not enough to make a print run but still plenty on there for the average person.

My sister buys these from the local paper when she moves & they are great for wrapping china & glasses. Also excellent for covering boxes since it's a nicely heavy stock.

Though I don't endorse "used" pizza boxes, I have used new ones (bought them from the local pizza take out for next to nothing) which can be great for odd sized items. I also found out who does the producing of these boxes locally & buy their overruns of pizza boxes.

Guess we know where O.J. Really dumped the murder weapon...

But s eriously, didn't the Postal Workers opening this ever think to call in the Postal Inspectors about this??

Furniture stores throw away a huge amount of bubble wrap and styrofoam. TJ Maxx is one of my greatest suppliers of bubble wrap and boxes. Cruise down behind the little strip malls (if you have them) and "shop". I started out looking at Hallmark stores and found several other places actually have more than I could ever use at once.

Try the Gap or go the the mall, they are always throwing out perfect, clean boxes in all sizes from their weekly shipments.
Also, check Pier 1, their boxes smell like yummy candles and you find clean bubble wrap too. Dumpster diving behind the malls is a great free resource! Just don't use boxes from food stores.
