Used to live near a First Nations reserve - Last names - Shot Both Sides, Notuseful , BruisedHead, Whitemanleft, BigTobacco , YellowOldWoman, all last names of families I knew -- Really nice people - just that the names don't translate particularly well they would have been better left in their original language.

One of my many jobs along lifes way was working for the Department of Public Safety. I ran across a very strange name and made a comment about it. Asked if it was for real. This was a loooong time before that guy "formerly known as Prince"!
One of the ladies who had been working there for over 20 years broke out a notebook she kept for all the strange names she had come across.
There were little girls (actually adults at the time of DL issuance, but "babies" at one point in their life) named: John, Paul, Edward, or just about any other common "male" name you could think of.
There were little boys named: Mary, Jane, Dorothy, Shirly and just about any other common "female" name you could think of.
There were the usual Armen Hammer or Rusty Nail type names. Some that stick out in my memory were the Baby Face Nelsons (more than one had pulled this on their helpless infants) and other "famous" people names. There were the "fractions", a lot of fractions! 3/4, 1/2 and 7/8 were really almost common! One of the "cutesiest" I recall was Cup Anne Saucer! Hopefully she went by Anne???
Your right some people should NOT be allowed to name their children!

Rather sweet, I thought, but I can imagine the kidding she must have gone through growing up.

When my son was in high school he attended UIL events and was always running into the same kids. One was named Robin Hood. He lived on Nottingham Road in a subdivision known as Sherwood Forest! Nobody would believe him until he got old enough to drive and was able to produce a driver's license to prove it! I often wondered if his parents chose that street and subdivision just to make it work or if it was just "fate"?
I saw someone mention Mary Christmas, my aunt is named Merry Christine (she was born 1 week before christmas and her "big sister", my mom, wanted it to be Christmas)! She was really upset she didn't get her way!!! My Aunt Merry is greatful!
We also had a young minister and his wife move to our area back in the late 70's. Very "proper" people, very active in the community. Their son was named Toke Rushing...they steadfastly maintained it was an old family name. Poor kid had to go to public school during the 80's! Can you imagine?

The Joy Perks reminds me of an article that appeared in our college newspaper once about the power of initials. Apparently there was some study about how people with good initials (i.e. WOW, GRT) were generally happier and nicer than those with bad ones (i.e. FAT, HAG). The reporter pointed out that seemed to work on our campus, where one of the better liked administrators had the initials ACE, and one of the hated ones: JRK.

Speaking of initials, I just found out the names of a friends soon to be born twin daughters. One of them is going to be Kennedy Kathleen and the last name begins with "K" also. Didn't even dawn on them until I pointed out that their little girls initials would be KKK. They are going to change the spelling of her middle name to Cathleen.

I knew a Harley David too. Poor kid.
A really good friend of mine has the last name "Code". He wants to name his kids Ariel, Morse, and Secret. My boyfriend and I are trying to talk him out of it. Luckily he doesn't have any kids yet, his wife divorced him.
About the initials thing- I am wondering, should I not marry my boyfriend after all? If I do my initials will be "ASS". LOL!

Some parents ought to be shot....
I remember flipping though my college student directory once and finding some rather odd first names, including:
Harribeth [apparently the daughter of parents named Harry and Elizabeth]
Shazelma [Gomer Pyle's kid???]
Gotta love it.
sulyn1950: The pedant in me requires me to point out that Shirley actually started out as a boy's name. Shirley Temple was actually saddled with a masculine name, but her popularity soon made the name a popular girl's name.

And her initials are HAG.
