Like I said it is WORTHLESS on old homemade heirlooms and things so rare or different that their is no value documented.

Really? I imagine the Hope diamond could be considered "rare"...

Some postal customers have entrusted treasured belongings to the Post Office. The world-famous Hope diamond arrived safely at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., after being sent from New York City by Harry Winston, its owner, in an ordinary brown package, insured for $1 million.

In fact, when it was decided to send the Hope Diamond from New York City to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, a number of ways were considered, including armored truck, courier service, and the U.S. Postal Service. It was decided to send this treasure by registered, insured mail. Needles to say, it arrived quickly and safely.

mrpotatoheadd,

Well DAH,
I suppose its pretty well documented that the HOPE DIAMOND is RARE and PRICELESS.
Are you sure a Million dollars was enough?

Everything has a price. Well, sooner or later!

Here's another scenario for Morgantown (when he get back)

You purchase a boxlot of glass from an ebay seller, say $200. It has 4 tumblers and a pitcher. The book value alone on the pitcher is $150. The package arrives, but one tumbler in the lot is broken. You bought this as a lot, $200 for all. Only one tumbler is broken. How do you find the reimburseable value for the tumbler. Is it $50 ($200 divided by 4?) Or is it $25? (The "book value" of each tumbler).

In this case, of course you would use the "book value" for reimbursement. You couldn't use a "sales receipt" because the amount is for the whole boxlot without breakdown as to value of each item.

So it works both ways, COST and VALUE, the most important determinant of which is purchasing insurance that will support the DOCUMENTED "worth".

Well, KatyD: I would have had the pitcher shipped separately. There, take that!

edited to say --> good point.
edited again, I thought you said the pitcher was broken! I get your point though.

Something isn't quite adding up to me.

If the seller ships ONLY via UPS and the item value is under $100, why is the buyer paying an additional amount for insurance? And why does the buyer think they can purchase delivery confirmation?

Recently I closed an auction of xxx $90. Each xxx has a book value of $40-50 [1999]. Taking the low end, and if I had shipped them to Birthday Girl KatyD; we could have made a tidy profit! $240/2 = $120 for me, and $120 for KatyD. Now that would have been a better Bday gift than any old "Jennie" basket! ----> )

Packer! Absolute and cranberry over crisp ice! If I could scan one to you I would. Well, after I checked your ID

edited to say, sorry KatyD, it's your Birthday you should keep it all.

Of course I don't know hepburn personally, but I think that was a typo, and she meant to say that she used USPS exclusively, NOT UPS.

I definitely need a cocktail. Can I have some of that cranberry stuff too? Hold the booze though. My head is spinning too!

Only if they got run over by the truck. But you win some, and you lose some.

Microbes,

Well, assuming it was a typo and the seller uses USPS, what the heck is there to rant or rave about?

The buyer has said they'll remit payment promptly. (+1 for them if they carry through)

They've declined the "voluntary" insurance. (THEIR option)

Asked politely to have delivery confirmation AND willing to pay for it. (Another +1 for asking and asking nicely, plus a bonus for being willing to pay for it).

Maybe she meant that she only ships UPS where there is an automatic $100 insurance coverage and the buyer wants it sent by USPS with DC and its got the seller pissed off cause she does'nt want to change her TOS.

Hmmmmmmmm.....possible?

Packer, the "Jennie" basket is the smallest of the baskets made by Morgantown Glass. Any Morgantown basket is difficult to find and pricey.

Eventer, but we've had so much fun "ranting and raving" on this thread!

Add to that the lady having the mindset that what she won was worth exactly that, and my patience level flew out the window. In short, I cop't a 'tude. After ranting about it, I have come to the conclusion that I am indignant that she didnt want to protect what she won for a piddle sum. (Wish she would back out. Hell, I would rather have kept it than see it go for 9 bucks)

IMHO this entire thing is about one person wanting to impose their value system on someone else.

WHO cares what the buyer thinks or what value they place on it? They are the buyer and if they pay for it and want to stomp it flat into the ground, that's their right.

The answers to all your question is it depends on the postal employee you are dealing with and how much they have between the ears. I bet if you did a survey, you will find the postal service will differ on how they will handle a insurance claim from counter to counter.

Sort of like the ebay customer care department.

Sometimes, this isn't a bad feature- if you don't like the first answer you get, you can always try again.
