Hi all,

I have a guitar I'd like to sell on eBay. I got it as collateral for a few bucks I lent a neighbor about a year ago (I'm patient).

It's not worth a lot (less than $100), and I'm wondering how to ship it. When we box it up, it's larger than USPS will take. I know UPS will take it, but considering the value, the shipping will be expensive and keep the bidding low.

Anyone know a lower cost alternative?

Thanks in advance,
Sadie

You could ship it USPS, it should cost under 20.00.
I sold lots of Guitars and shipped all threw the post office, I also got the boxes
for shipping from the music stores, when they are throwing them out,

The heaviest Electric Guitar was shipped for 16.00, Don't worry about the
cost of shipping, when you list the Guitar and the buyers bid, most know
the cost of shipping.
Or you could state a shipping price, and tell them whatever money is left you
will return, that's what I did at the beginning, until I got familiar with the shipping cost.
Just be sure to put lots of large bubble on the Guitar before you box it. And tape the box with strong tape. You could ship it Parcel Post, USPS it is cheaper then priority.

How are you packaging it? Unless it's a really huge guitar or you're using a huge box, it shouldn't be over the size limits.

I've always used UPS to ship instruments, and the shipping hasn't been too expensive, considering the size and weight.

If it's a really cheap instrument, you might be better off trying to sell it locally -- serious instrument collectors don't mind paying a lot for shipping, but you're right, someone buying a $100.00 guitar isn't going to want to pay much for shipping.

A piece of advice Sadie.

If it's a really low $$ guitar it's not going to do very well on ebay. I'm speaking of some of the cheapest brands (or off brands) that are made in Korea, China and the like.

It's work to pack a guitar and you'll have to find a guitar shipping box as well.

Most every guitar shipping box is under the 108 inch requirement (circumference plus length). If it's a bit over 108 total, then you can trim some off the end to get it under 108.

Good luck with it.

under the 108 inch requirement (circumference plus length).

USPS will take a 130 inch box, but you won't like the price.

Thank you all!

I'm such a dork! For some reason I thought the USPS limit was 103". I know it may not seem like a big difference, but we can do it within the 108" easily.

I think I'll post it on a couple of bulletin boards in town before I list it on eBay.

Thank you for all the suggestions and help.

We sold one with a case a while back. Since there is a bicycle store in town and they just happened to have a fresh bicycle box out for pick up it worked out beautifully. Cost about $30 to ship via USPS but it arrived safely. Maybe you could try the regional sales on ebay?

You could go to the USPS web site and order two boxes of the long triangular shaped Priority poster mailers. They're free, and the best part is the big boxes they come in are just the right size for shipping either a banjo or a guitar. You may have to put two boxes together for a large guitar, but you can't beat the price!
