Shar, Gen Powell's got you-know-whats, that's for sure.

Here's a quote from his speech, in case anyone wants to brush up on their Colin Powellesque Republican politics:

"We must understand there is a problem for us out there. We must understand the cynicism that exists in the black community.

"The kind of cynicism that is created when, for example, some in our party miss no opportunity to roundly and loudly condemn affirmative action that helped a few thousand black kids get an education, but you hardly hear a whimper when it's affirmative action for lobbyists who load our federal tax code with preferences for special interests."

edit for clarification...

Colin Poweell is my hero James! I like him even more than Colin Powell.

do I have enough smilies?

Gore's speech to the nation tonight was a class act compared to GW's little power play attempt last night.

g'night rawbunzel and Franny, just popped in to say hello for a minute.

Beth's recipes on the other thread have gotten me incredibly hungry and now... must have midnight snack!

Could they have picked a worse candidate for a return to morality campaign?

Empty candidate, emptier message. Fact is, the Republican Party has nothing to offer this country. That's why they opted for their "return to morality" platform. The whole thrust of Bush's campaign was "If you hate Clinton, vote for me.[/i] It's like when big corporations have nothing new or substantial to communicate to their customers, they come out with a "We Listen" advertising campaign, or "Committed to Quality." It's all hot air.

The "return to morality" made for some so-so sound bytes, but beyond the words lies just a great vast emptiness -- a wasteland governed by some rich old men trying to protect their own interests. And ironically, as we saw during the impeachment hearings, the more they point fingers at others, the easier it is for the world to see that their hands are just as dirty.

"10,000 in Miami Dade alone that weren't counted at all, because the MACHINE couldn't
pick up a vote."
I was one of the lucky ones Katy D., I live in Broward County and thanks to the way the canvassing board in Broward counted the votes I know my vote counted
Shouldn't the 10,000 in Miami Dade that did not have their votes counted be afforded the same luxury?
The issue has really changed here---It is not a matter of winning or losing. But having your vote count---
If we were mediating an election in a small third rate country wouldn't we insist on hand counting ballots in such a close election?
In this country it is one man one vote------

Don't forget "compassionate conservatism". I believe we have been witnessing that concept right here.

Can anyone define that term? I mean what is a "compassionate conservative"?

Sure he's a great leader.

This is Thomas Pyle, an aide to GOP Rep. Tom DeLay, and Michael Murphy, who works for a DeLay fund-raising committee. Doug Heye from California Rep.Richard Pombo's office also was in the fray..

"In Washington, several GOP aides say the office of Mr. DeLay, the House Republican whip, took charge of the effort on Capitol Hill, passing on an offer many staffers couldn't refuse: free air fare, accommodations and food in the Sunshine State -- all paid for by the Bush campaign. Aides who accepted took advantage of liberal congressional workplace rules that allow them to jump from government jobs to political tasks at a moment's notice by declaring themselves on vacation or temporary leave. "Once word leaked out, everybody wanted in," says one GOP operative involved in the effort. Participants estimate that more than 200 staffers signed on, some spending more than a week in South Florida. Many stayed in Hiltons by the beach and received $30 a day for food, as well as an invitation to an exclusive Thanksgiving Day party in Fort Lauderdale....[GOP] camaraderie was on full display at the glitzy Thanksgiving night party featuring free food and libations at the Hyatt on Pier 66 in Fort Lauderdale -- "a festive family mood," says one protester. Entertainer Wayne Newton crooned the song "Danke Schoen," until a group of frenzied female fans rushed the stage. The night's highlight was a conference call from Mr. Bush and running mate Dick Cheney, which included joking references by both running mates to the incident in Miami."

He's a party guy, too.

"If we were mediating an election in a small third rate country wouldn't we insist on hand counting ballots in such a close election?"

Do you think we'd insist that they have a hand counts only in counties that had an overwhelming majority for one candidate, and then we'd insist on members of that candidate's party make judgement calls on the voters intent?

I prefer machine counts, they are faster, and they don't make judgement calls, any errors are spread evenly across the board. If a machine fails to count a vote because the voter didn't cast there vote properly it does that without any prejudices.

Franny,

Fraid so!

JamesO,

Darn! Never thought to check his "you know whats". I'll have to do that next time.

Enchanted,

Hi. Sorry I was talking to D for a minute.

Ah Yes! Those brass overies.

Spaz,

Please don't forget, Henry Hyde's was, "just a youthful indiscretion".

Didn't like the Big Bush, don't like the Little Bush. Has anyone considered that Daddy Bush might have chosen the impressive Dan Quayle for his VP because he reminded him of his own son? LOLOL
ZAZZIE, move over girl, I'm a-comin' to Canada!

Ironically, I just found a journal today while cleaning the garage...one of the journals I used to keep when my kids were babies. I would write letters to them as if they could read so that I can give them to them when they're older and they could have some insight into what was going on in the world and in our world when they were small. Long story short, there was a blurb on Bush in there and I had to chuckle. Needless to say my description of the man was less than flattering but completely true...and this was right about the time he imposed a nice big tax hike after his adamant campaign promise not to do so. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

Hey Hey let's leave all the bad speeler jokes out of this huh?

I happen to know a very well repected fuzzy democrat who is just as bad a speeler as I am

Oh I like Colin Powell too.

I also like black olives and sunsets and group hugs!!!

I also think if they are going to recount they need to recount everything...the whole country all the hanging, pregnant, dimpled and in all other ways affirmed chads everywhere!! If there are chads doing all these weird things in Florida they have to be doing them everywhere else..you know those Chads they're all the same.

krs I was there at one of those rally's at the Broward Court house. It was so funny, the Bush side ,was so organized. It was like it was staged and rehearsed. I was on the other side, and I must say the crowd was much smaller, and much more spontaneous. I bumped into a few of my friends and they were down there for the same reason I was curiosity. We were not payed----I live 15 mins from the court house.
Its a shame somebody has to win and someone has to lose-----This election is a tie and that is what is sad...There can only be one president----.At this point I would rather see Gore either ask for a total recount of the whole state or just concede because he will never be able to lead effectively.

Hi Uaru,

A machine is only as good as the inventor and the man/woman who operates and installs the machine.

Was the machine in proper operating order? Were the trays that caught the chads emptied before they filled up? Were the ballot pages aligned evenly?
