I didn't list anything new today, but I have been kept pretty busy with mail, email, BIN purchases, and closing auctions. One guy scared me by emailing that he needed his item RIGHT NOW, how could he have it shipped fast as possible..and he had a military email account address. I was flipping out, couldn't imagine what *I* would sell that would be so crucial. I emailed back that I could send next-day air or something...but no airplanes are flying.
Turned out he just meant he wanted Priority so he'd get it fairly quickly, for personal reasons....

I was too numb yesterday to even think about eBay. But, today I've decided to cancel the auctions I do have up. I've only got seven up and only one bid anyway. I'll email my bidder and tell him I'll let him know when I relist.
My heart just isn't into it. I've thought about the idea that that's what they want....to stop our lives from going on as usual. Well, that's exactly what it has done. I just feel out of respect for the lives lost that's what "I" want to do. I wanted to give blood but they turned me away because I take so many medications.

I cancelled the newly listed items that didn't have bids - just didn't seem to have the highest priority in my life this week. My concentration is poor, and with shipping delays - better for me to relist later.

The more we let them change our lives the more they win. I plan to list just as usual. I am a defiant S.O.B and even though I feel like walking around in a fog I don't intend to every time I do I say snap out of it that is what they wanted. I even went to the flea markets yesterday. There weren't a lot of dealers out but enough and all said the same thing I did. We stopping doing what we do and being who we are the terrorist win more. As one guy so tactfully put it he wasn't going to be a wimp and let them stop him from his normal activities.
To a point the first few days I did let it affect business but now it is time to go on with life remember all the dead all those hurt go to the services etc. . . get the #@(*&$ that did it.
As far as real life and business as usual the terrorist can kiss my *utt they are not going to stop me. However every person deals with things their own way and I respect that also.

I am so sorry and sad and angry it is difficult to do anything normal. I couldn't
Tuesday but forced myself yesterday to contact Monday nights winning bidders. I am in Canada and I knew that many bidders were in the US and I broke down often while writing email. Nothing will make these dancing idiots happier than to also tank your economy. Don't let them. History has shown that the Americans are at their best when things are at there worst. My heart is with you.

Excellent point. They would like nothing more than to collapse the economy. That is why the WTC was chosen as a symbol of everything they despise.
I am still getting e-mails for shipping quotes and some questions. It is good for the spirit to keep busy.

I had considered ending all of my auctions because of the WTC. But, either out of stubbornness, or because I was too stunned to make up my mind to do anything I've let the auctions I already had running to complete.
This is the first time EVER that I've run an auction on ebay and taken an actual loss. I'm not sure what to think about it. On the one hand, I'm pissed because I lost money and because there are bottom-feeders who went through ebay to find auctions ending at rediculously low prices and snapped them up while everyone else was grieving. On the other hand, I don't want to be a part of the general panic that could very well be the straw that broke the economy's back.
Even if I sell at firesale prices, I'm still bringing in money. No cash-flow = no business. But, I doubt many of us can operate at a loss for very long. At least I kept my day job.

Hi. I usually don't have time to talk on the Net like this-but this has been an extrodinary week, full of tragedy, and I have a feeling that talking is good therapy for all of us. This is the first time ever I haven't had the heart to list and take care of business. I do Street Festivals in NYC as well as run our business on Ebay and elsewhere. Needless to say-all Street Festivals have been cancelled, the largest of which was supposed to start today, the Feast of San Gennaro-and run until Sept. 23rd. Had I not stopped to make a phone call into Manhatten(office in Jersey) on Tuesday-I may wwell have been a statistic by now...I am writing from my heart like this because I want to give all of you, no matter where you are, any bit of encouragement that I possibly can. I haven't had much concentration over these past days, the WTC along with many people inside it were very dear to me-I am not originally a New Yorker, but I feel my heart splitting into millions of pieces everytime I see the replays on CNN...for over 25 years I have lived within the 5 boroughs, and have had a "love story" with the city itself going back into my childhood...Thousands of Fellow Citizens..along with Our Beloved Landmark,The World Trade Center, and part of the Pentagon as well have perished...but Americans are SURVIVORS-we MUST PICK OURSELVES UP, BRUSH OFF, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY UNITE TOGETHER AND GO ON...REESTABLISH, REBUILD OUR LIVES BECAUSE TO DO OTHERWISE GIVES THESE ----------------! THE VICTORY THEY SO DESIRE! Put those Flags into your auctions...to show the Unity We Have-and try to go on. Don't Ever Forget What Happened-but do try to go on as best as you can!

I do NOT agree that flags are appropriate in our auctions at this time. I realize that bidding is down, my own auctions have suffered. BUT, I will NOT try to make a profit on my auctions by putting the flag in there. NO! I think it's not right to use this symbol in a commercial way. I am also sickened by the SPAM that I'm getting from every company on the net. Just a moment ago I got one from Half.com, saying how sorry they are that the WTC got destroyed, and how they'd like me to visit their site, and while I'm there why not buy some books. Give me a break!

petertdavis...I could not DISAGREE with you more. I don't in any way see that adding an Old Glory to my auctions is at all "commercial." I will be open in my RL business tomorrow and I will fly the flag. That is where I am and I WILL show my support of my country and fellow citizens. Similarly, my auctions are a part of who I am and what I do. I will also show my support in that venue. Period.
I love my country. If it ever came to it, I would fight to protect my family and my land. Just like my forefathers.
PS...I hope everyone is thinking hard about their Second Ammendment rights. It's not just "somewhere else" anymore. It's here...right here. I'm not a crazy. I don't plan on being "armed to the teeth." I'm really a mild mannered, peace loving little woman. However, we have shotguns and we know how to use them. Consider Germany pre-WWII. Gun control is PC and mostly puts the weapons and the balance of power in the hands of those who have evil intent. Cling to the freedoms you have left. Be willing to protect yourselves and your country. I am.

I've owned guns since I was a child, but that has nothing to do with what I commented about.
I don't have any problem with PEOPLE expressing this sentiment. When a business expresses it, I question the real intent. Aren't they just hoping to drum up some business by saying 'we really are great because we have a flag and the WTC just got destroyed.' Looks too much to me like they're just trying to profit off the suffering. Fly your flags at home.

I personally wouldn't think that at all. I don't think people are going to buy (or not) based on your number of flags. Putting a flag in your auction is like wearing a yellow ribbon. It's supposed to spark some thought in passersby and show you care. IMO.

Displaying your flag at your business whether in RL or auctions should come from your heart. It should represent your love of country, and show respect for the people that lost their lives and for their families. If you don't feel that way fine, but don't belittle others for wanting to show compassion and unity.
If I saw a flag flying at a business or auction it wouldn't even enter my mind that it was to bring in business, especially right now. I'm truly sorry you feel that way.

What did I say that made you think I put a flag on my site to bring in more business that is sick. I put the flag for the very reason you said. For love of my country and respect for all of the people who were hurt by this. Many others are displaying flags on there auctions for these reasons. Only sick fools like you would think anything else.

I'm pleased to see this perfectly normal response of so many of you not listing, tho frankly a bit surprised. I myself have been very numbed, and glued to the TV since Tuesday.
Anyway, I checked out Medved after reading all these responses to see how the overall listings on ebay are going. Way down for September if you check the monthly chart, and visible on the yearly chart too.

I wish it was last week, and this week would never happened!
I don't think it's necessary to fly a flag everyday it might lose it's meaning. Sad but true. It really brings people together in times of sorrow or celebration.

I'm not arguing with the sentiment, just the means. Can't we think of ways to express our "love of ...[our] country and respect for all of the people who were hurt by this" without it being attached to a commercial transaction?

Im sure I can say we all wish that. But flying a flag to show support for our country should not be looked upon the way some of these posters have. During the gulf war I made flag pens and my hubby passed them out at work for free. I sent a new batch with him every day. Soon almost everyone in our small town was wareing one of those pens. So I feel very offended by what some of the posters or saying.

eBay may be a commercial business, but it's made up of a community of real people. People who are hurting, and may not have any other way of showing support.

manyirons, I wouldn't say there's anything wrong with handing out pens with a symbol of the flag on it. You weren't making money on it, were you? OTOH, if you were using them to promote your ebay auctions, that would be the kind of thing I'm arguing against. I don't think people should be using this disaster to promote their auctions. If you are using the disaster to promote your auctions, then you SHOULD be offended by what I'm saying, because it's that type that I'm trying to offend. Putting a flag in your auction may be innocent, or it may not be. It has the appearance of trying to use the disaster to promote your auctions.

petertdavis, Perhaps you should reread your email from half.com. If it was the same one I received, it was quite informative and compassionate and at no point did it say to visit the sight to purchase books. If you need to exagerate and mislead to make your point, is your point worth making?

I am so angry I can not see straight. I can not decide whether to list or not to list. I went to mail a pkg to Canada today and they would not accept it. I will probably list on Sunday but I just don't know. I was 10 miles away from the WTC when it happened and I could see them burning, somehow selling baseball cards dosent seem important

I can't get motivated to list or even relist the auctions that have ended. I think I'll just let the ones I have up now since before the tragic day run their course and then I'll evaluate. It's difficult to get excited about people buying widgets when so many folks are hurting either physically or emotionally.
Thank you MissCandle, AuthorizedArt and others for those really nice flags - I plan on using some of them.
And thank you nice folks in Canada for your sentiments, I appreciate them them very much.
PeterDavis - try looking at things and leaving the dollar signs out - it can be refreshing!
And finally,
One guy scared me by emailing that he needed his item RIGHT NOW, how could he have it shipped fast as possible..and he had a military email account address. I was flipping out, couldn't imagine what *I* would sell that would be so crucial.
Keziak, I sure hope it wasn't your book on 'Thermonuclear War' you listed on 9/11!!
