just took this off a closed AFA auction
This is an Auction for America listing. eBay will forward the winning bidder's payment to the September 11th Fund. Important:You must pay for this item using eBay Online Payments so that all proceeds can be sent to this charity. If you are not on the eBay U.S. site you will need to go to the eBay U.S. site to pay for this item.
looks like you can still bid if your out of the country so when a seller thought it was only going to cost him say 3.95 to ship could end up costing them 3 or 4 times that much.
also it looks like you have to pay for each item there is no way to combine them

". I think eBay just worded this wrong. "Seller responsible", just means eBay isn't paying the shipping.
No, it means what people are saying it means. Straight from the AB"
Also, sellers who choose to participate are responsible for all shipping and handling charges for Auction for America items. This is part of the seller's Auction for America donation. Please be sure that your item listings reflect this.

People ARE charging shipping, and the ones I looked at, ARE getting bids. It says NOWHERE on the "buy" page, or in the auction banner that the SELLER pays shipping.

Redcircle,
Its not a mater of participating or not participating it is a matter of how this will impact other regular auctions as I stated in an earlier post
There are many sellers that depend on their income through ebay to support them and put food on the table. What I am seeing is that if a charity auction has a widget selling for $20.00 and a regular auction has the same widget (Or Close To) for $20.00 + $5.00 shipping why would a buyer bid on the regular auction when they can get the charity widget for $5.00 cheaper (NO SHIPPING) and the + is they can feel good about buying the widget because the amount went to charity. Even minus the good feeling why wouldn't a bidder bid on an item when there is no shipping cost (We all know the various threads about shipping and how bidders feel about it.) This is going to have a major financial effect for many sellers through the whole Christmas season.

This is stated under the sell on the front page of ebay See item # 2 the reason some have shipping in these auctions is that they may have forgot to take it out even if the shipping was included by the bidder in the price it would have to be paid for through billpoint thus the shipping charges would also go to charity leaving the seller still responsiable for the shipping.
Fees
1.eBay waives insertion fees and final value fees on items listed and sold through the Auction for America program.
2.The seller is responsible for shipping & handling expenses related to their Auction for America items.
3.All features selected by the seller will be charged standard fees. However, eBay will donate all featured fees for Auction for America items to The September 11th Fund.

May not say it and sellers may be charging but they won't be getting the shipping fee from Billpoint forwarded to them. They will discover that soon enough.
They could try and have the buyer send them the shipping seperate through PP or by check/MO, but I don't believe that will happen. Could even get a complaint filed on them for even asking.

We hope that the entire eBay Community will join us in this effort to help those, including members of the eBay Community, who have been impacted by these events. But this only applies to members in USA or Canada who can register with Billpoint. Why are users outside USA or Canada discriminated against?

I think anyone who is opposed to eBay’s Auction for America should take a moment and at least log onto eBay’s community page and take their poll which asks the following question:
Do you plan to buy/sell any items on eBay's Auction for America charity program?
Yes- I will buy and sell what I can
Yes- I will at least buy or sell 1 item
No- I have donated in other ways
Currently 360 people have voted. The results are as follows:
Yes- I will buy and sell what I can - 18%
Yes- I will at least buy or sell 1 item -12%
No- I have donated in other ways - 68%
I cast my NO vote, now it’s your turn to send a message to eBay. I’m sure they are checking out Discussion & Help Boards, AW as well as other similar boards and their poll.

As a buyer I certainly don't see where I'm contributing ONE thing to this cause.
Sure its your(buyers) money thats getting contributed. But what are you out?
NOTHING, NADA, ZIP because you are getting the product for your money. Why would you care if the money goes to the seller, charity or tim-buck-too.
This is all resting on the SELLERS shoulders!
Seller is out the product PLUS shipping fees and all for what? A WARM FUZZY FEELING?

kolonel22: Thank you for posting that info about the poll. While I was voting, Kevin Pursglove was talking to KCBS about this marketing effort. He made sure to mention BillPoint and exactly what BillPoint is/does. He also said that Meg Whitman wants every American to either sell one item through Auction Off America or buy one.
I know I lay awake nights worrying about what Meg Whitman wants...

What exactly is the September 11 Fund?? Does Ebay decide where the money goes? American Red Cross, Salvation Army or a charity of their making or choosing? I canot find that in their message.
They asked me to answer emails in this time of need and I said yes thinking they were busy with other things related to the disaster. When I got the official word that it was to answer questions related to AFA, I removed my name. I don't know enough about this scheme to answer questions. I thought they wanted me to help newbies with listings, etc and I was willing to help at this time. I am confused.

I've donated financially what I am able to at this time (after a slow summer) to the Red Cross through PayPal. I plan on donating blood. When I heard last week about eBay putting together a plan to help back east, I thought great...I can donate my time to help and immediately volunteered. Since a good selling time span is here, I could donate more money as I made more money. I was very disappointed with the details of this program when I read about it this morning. What is eBay thinking? I feel betrayed and all the more afraid of being able to sustain my living on eBay. Good luck everyone.

This too shall pass and I don't think it will take 100 days.
Just did a search for "Madame Alexander" found 1256, did another with only AFA, found 1.
I think if Ebay wanted to contibute, it would donate listing fees on a certain day, sort of like a free listing day, but we, the sellers, would still pay and Ebay would contribute the fees. It would encourage people to continue listing in these difficult times. I know I am hesitant about listing collectibles that people will think twice about buying when they are worried about other things and how all of this is going to turn out.

The press is getting the impression that the proceeds from the auctions will be coming from eBay's expanse. Here is a report from Yahoo.
===========================================
eBay Adds Charity Auction to Benefit Terror Victims
PALO ALTO, Calif. (Reuters) - The popular Internet auction site eBay Inc. (Nasdaq:EBAY - news) on Monday opened a charitable auction site to benefit victims of last week's attacks, and challenged itself to raise $100 million in the 100 days its ``Auction for America'' will run.
A spokesman for eBay said sellers Monday listed some 5,000 items -- including cell phones, jewelry and diet pills -- on the Auction for America site, which will forward all proceeds to last week's victims. Visitors may also go to the site (http://pages.ebay.com/auctionforamerica/) to donate cash.
There was no immediate indication on how much money had been raised the first day but one of the higher-priced items, a diamond and sapphire ring from Tiffany's, was being offered for $8,000.
The company said it also had its engineers and staff at work on additional charity services that would be up and running once they were technologically feasible.

Below is supposedly a letter written by Paypal to ebay asking to allow Paypal members to participate in the charity auction.
Meg Whitman
CEO
Ebay, Inc.
September 17, 2001
Dear Meg,
Congratulations on “Auction for America” – it looks like it could be a great way to help the victims of Tuesday’s terrible
tragedies.
Why don’t we make this opportunity available to as many members of the eBay community as possible? It appears you are
currently limiting participation in “Auction for America” to users of the Billpoint payment service. As you know, less than
30% of eBay auctions accept Billpoint, while over 70% accept PayPal. As many of our mutual customers have asked us
today, why not allow PayPal-preferring members of the eBay community to help the cause, as well?
We can easily collect all PayPal payments received for “Auction for America” purchases and guarantee their contribution to
the “September 11th Fund.” We will, of course, waive all transaction fees for these payments, ensuring that 100% of the
payments are donated to the fund.
As we can attest after witnessing the amount of money PayPal members have donated to the American Red Cross through
our website, the online auction and payments communities are extremely generous and interested in helping victims’ families.
I applaud your interest in helping members of the eBay community assist these families, and look forward to working with
you to ensure the broadest level of participation in “Auction for America” and its highest success. Please let me know as
soon as possible if you will allow PayPal-accepting sellers to help out, as many have contacted us already.
Best regards,
Peter Thiel
CEO
PayPal, Inc.

This sham gets worse.
Not only are most sellers charging shipping but at least one person is running a ten day featured auction for one item and has a "click here to get it now" link that leads you to their store where they have several of the same items listed with BIN. From the nature of the items they are listing to the way they are using this so-called charity for advertising I would say they are definitely attempting to profit from tragedy.
What a mess!

This is laughable.
I just did some checking on the AFA auctions in a category I was going to start listing in. PLEASE NOTE: WAS going to start.
There is a high feedback seller that has 2 pretty pricey auctions running for AFA.
Now the first thing you read when you enter these auctions is eBay's little blurb about ONLY ACCEPTING BILLPOINT for payment.
Ok, now we get to sellers description.
$8.00 UPS shipping, I DO NOT ACCEPT BILLPOINT OR PAYPAL!!
Talk about jumping in head first without reading the rules first.
YIKES!! I think eBay is going to end up with a lot of pissed off sellers when they find out they have to spring for shipping fees PLUS give away thier items.
Like I said this is laughable!

I think alot of the aspects of this Auction for America has been covered but one that I think has the most reprocussions.
As pointed out by Dawna34:

I brought this up in another thread attempting to see if others see the effects that may occur on identifical items if only one had an AFA icon after it. I see problems with this, especially since the 100 days takes us right through the holidays.
I have never and will never contribute to United Way. I choose my individual charities and church and give quite a bit. I resent having my auctions affected because I don't have an AFA icon after it. I'm certainly not going to run an AFA auction once a week just so others will look at what else I might have.

When it sinks in to some of these sellers that they have to pay for shipping as well as donate the item, I'll bet you see a lot of auctions that will cost $1.00 or less to ship.
Unless you have unlimited funds and only do eBay to starve off bordom, you won't be seeing much of the really good stuff go to AFA.

<----Voted a big N.O.
Here's how to tell how many sellers are using this eBay scam.
Search for a popular searched word like..."can" using the regular search and then search for the sellers that are using the "Auctions for America"
An average of 1-2% (if that) on the words that i searched.
Looks like sellers are aborting even the idea of launching AA auctions.
