I read a suggestion somewhere that said to find the most obscene graphic depiction of a unique sexual act you can find(aka "Really nasty porn pics" and substitute them.
XaNeX, I really, really like your solution. Very ingenious!
BRAVO!!

abacaxi - Sign up for the VERO program, put a (C) symbol with your username on the pictures, and report the SOB to eBay for theft of intellectual property.
That is what I do now with eBay sellers. This particular seller is on another auction site in Latin America. I looked at my server logs but all the URLs after the ? are truncated. So, I don't know who the seller is or which auction they have my picture in. It is also very difficult to navigate through a site that is pure Spanish. They are eating up 10% of my bandwidth allowance!

I took a pic I had of the WTC collapseing and wrote underneath it "I proudly support Osma Bin Laden and all proceeds will be contributed to his effort".[/i]
That is great!! I had a much needed laugh. Damn I wish someone would steal my pictures!!! You guys have some great ideas!
I just wonder why the picture thief doesn't take the extra 2 minutes to save the stolen pictures into his/her own HD and upload them as his own.

Because if the thief had a brain, they wouldn't be stealing the pictures in the first place.

Thief is "on another auction site in Latin America"
Can you SEARCH that site for the text of the path to your pictures - any seller at that site who is using your path is stealing your pictures. I read Spanish - email me at this user ID on hotmnail.com and I'll see what I can find.
I'll need the URL of the auction site AND the URL of one of your pictures. An indication of what you sell would help.
I suggest you just replace the pictures you are no longer using with a 10,000x10,000 pixel black GIF or something gross and discusting.

A very interesting, and worrying, thread. Unfortunately I am only computer semi-literate so would really appreciate it if someone could let me know how I could detect if people are using my pics[apart from checking my invoice]. I only list on Ebay if that helps. Thanks in advance.

The user is coming from these links:
http://www.deremate.terra.cl/accdb/viewItem.asp?
http://chile.deremate.com/accdb/viewItem.asp?
Since anything after the ? is removed on my web host's server log, I don't know where it is coming from. I believe they are linking to:
1. http://auctionimages.org/images/800/pbr800.jpg
2. http://auctionimages.org/images/320/pbr320.jpg
Oh well... I'm not over my allowance yet, so its not a big deal I guess.

Thief is "on another auction site in Latin America"
It might be a stretch but you could contact:
auctionimages.org
and they could put a script in that will not allow a request for a picture from a certain server...
http://www.deremate.terra.cl/ or
http://chile.deremate.com/
or only accept requests from a certain server...
http://www.ebay.com/
It's possible, and done, but I'm not sure they would be willing.

I think we're getting a little too much information about your web surfing habits...
I'm not sure how someone would dynamically change image names...Probably some sort of database with a lot of gnarly scripting. I don't know that much about the back-end stuff.
edited again to add space ^ and correct spelling! jesus!

This may not be relevant but here goes anyway!
A good inexpensive program for graphics is Paint Shop Pro. It is about $90 at Staples. To identify an image as yours, you can:
1) Watermark your images
or
2) Add text to your image
In addition, you can do all the great stuff like lighten, sharpen, etc your images.
NOw, Paint Shop Pro does alot of things that Adobe Photoshop does. It is really reliable for the small user, while Adobe Photoshop is super expensive, and most of the features it has that Paint Shop doesn't, are mainly used by photographers or professional graphic designers.

This finally got me to go see what was up with:
http://digimarc.com/
They have plugins for PS and Paint Shop Pro...
they are a subscription service it seems.
To liscense the software that puts your id in the picture (among other things) and have them troll the web for you to get reports for you of where your pictures are... Two services here, the ability to embed your images and have them constantly searching for your pics...
100-900 pictures embedded.
One year subscription.
$348.00
worth it?

When you see the logs to your pics appear, I suggest you monitor the auctions in the Packard Bell category
http://chile.deremate.com/categories/6692/default_6692_1.html
They are few to check and would be the most likely place to list the item you are selling.

YOu can search that site for a remote like yours. "control remoto" and the brand name should do it. Then you can scan for the pictures that are yours and find out who the seller is.

I have PaintShopPro. Love it. Adore it. Am taking it & my Mavica to my grave with me.
BTW, it's "on sale" currently at one of the office places (Office Max, Office Depot..I have trouble keeping them apart). There's a $30 mail in rebate.
But in all fairness, you don't need PSP to add text to your pictures. Most any photo editing software will do that.

Well ... unless the auctions you have listed are using those pics and have bids so you can't revise them, I would revise your auctions to use renamed pics, then upload something truly tasteless and lewd with the name of the old pics.
OR ... if it won't affect your auctions, add this Spanish text to the image and upload again .. He'll croak!

Hi
Yes, replace the pic with the words Free Shipping and 50% off. That should get them good.
Put a copyright symbol and your name on the pics. That may help. Keep in mind that as soon as you take a pic that pic is copyrighted right then and there.

I already do this. But that doesn't stop this seller from proceeding.

Let me know when you do this ... I want to see the results
But it's good practice to rename your pictures frequently, even if they are the same image, to prevent a build-up of parasites.

Sun818 -- heads up
I was browsing eBay for items like yours. Looks like you'll get a two for one when you switch the pics. There's a seller that copied your auction word for word with pic.
If you revise your auctions that have no bids, you could make the switch sooner.
