This auction seems very misleading to me.....luckily I can read, LOL! I can't believe people do that! Or maybe keyword spamming is more like it!

It seems to me they were trying to make you think this was a Kate Spade purse. You definitely have to READ the auction to find out it's not. I find it very misleading!

I would say it a way to get your attention, but is never said that it was a Kate Spade (I have no idea who that is) Purse, the title said it was a Kate Spade List.
Most people should read the auction before bidding and there would be no problem

OK, I am looking for a KATE SPADE bag, not a knockoff or copycat. So when I search Kate Spade bag, her auctions come up. She is not selling a Kate Spade, but a copycat. It's just annoying to click on it only to find out it's not really a Kate Spade bag. And, for some people who do not fully read a descripton, they might think they are bidding on Kate Spade. Although that would be their fault I suppose, because she does say it's not kate, but I still don't like it. It's just irritating because as a seller I would not feel comfortable listing something in that manner, and as a bidder I don't like it. Just my opinion(:

I guess we all have different opinions of this auction. What this seller is doing should be illegal under eBay rules. They are selling you a list of what they have so they can sell direct w/o going through eBay. The TOS states this is not a brand name bag, so there is nothing hidden.

It is definitely keyword spamming. Like using the word Rolex in an auction title and then selling a similar watch. Cut and dry violation yet no one turns them in and ebay does nothing. After a while most ebayers think this obviously keyword spam violation is a totally legit auction as witnessed in this thread.

Hi Sanmar,
ebay may say this is not a name brand bag, but go into any Nordstom or "high end" department store, and you will see them from $100.00 to $ 500.00 (approximately) depending on size and style. She is definitely a designer even if ebay does not recognize her. You can't find her at Target or Wal-Mart, LOL!

Definitely keyword spamming. If you want eBay's search to be a valid tool and you depend on eBay's search feature to attract buyers to your auctions then reporting keyword spamming is in your best interest.

I believe a lot of the problem with keyword spam is that bidders do tend to skim the titles and descriptions. If there is no keyword spamming allowed then there is less mistakes by the skimmers. You'll never get rid of the skimmers but you can make keyword spam a major violation and that is what ebay did many years ago.

First off, that is not a copy of a Kate Spade bag, this purse is no different then the ones that are for sale at market or even at your local Dillards, Macy's, JcPenny, etc. IT IS ONLY A COPYCAT IF IT HAS A KATE SPADE LABEL ON IT.
As for the poster who is upset that when you search by Kate Spade that you get her auctions...big deal. Do a search on google.com for Kate Spade and you will find a bunch of extraneous items. That is as silly as me being upset that because I try and find a nice quilt on eBay and get a bunch of quilt guitars. They are just words and we have to sort through.
I think she has a super selling tactic and I hope it works for her.
If you don't like it, move on.
Nobody cares how much you know until they know how much you care!

Fortunately eBay doesn't share your opinion. If eBay was to allow that tactic to be the norm then you could kiss the search feature good-bye. As a buyer I use the search feature heavily, as do most of my friends that shop on eBay.
Would you feel she has "a super selling tactic," if you were trying to sell a Kate Spade purse and the buyers were receiving 75% of their search matches because of keyword spamming?

Hi alwaysfun,
I disagree with your definition. In my opinion, a copycat or knockoff is someone who takes someone else's style(in this case) or idea and puts their OWN name on it. Now, if they had put KATE SPADE on the front of the bag, that would be a FAKE, not a knock off or copycat.
Let me use Coach bags as an example. (I assume you are familiar with them). JcPenney's, K-mart, even Costco make leather (or fake leather, LOL!) purses in the same styles, with the same kind of hang tag, and an inside pocket with their name on it. I have seen them, some are "Hunt Club", "Kirkland Signature",etc.......They are not claiming to be Coach, but are designing bags that are look just like Coach. A FAKE, says Coach on the tags, but is usually made in China and they spell words in the Coach Creed printed inside the bag incorrectly. Not to mention you can tell just by feeling the leather. The same goes for Dooney & Bourke (Spelling?? I don't like D & B so I'm not sure, LOL!)
Lots of popular items made by designers have knock offs and copycats, which I feel are different from fakes. She is not selling a fake, but trying to sell a knockoff to people looking for Kate Spade ORIGINALS.

It just goes to show how many sellers are not aware of most of the three million rules and regulations that ebay has in it's rulebook.

It is perfectly clear that what is in the title is what they are selling. YOU jumped to a conclusion based on your emotion and are blaming them for it! ABSURD!
IF you read the description, it is perfectly clear. The list is for other sources for name-brand fashion purses, not attempting to sell their own stuff off eBay.
Geez, you eBay police are always trying to build yourselves up by tearing others down.
It seems that they came up with a clever way to legitimately include KATE SPADE in the auction description WITHOUT it being keyword spamming since they ARE selling something relevant to KATE SPADE.
My biggest bane as a seller is idiots who don't or can't read and understand what is in the description, then grouse about it.
DON'T YOU HAVE SOMETHING BETTER TO DO WITH YOUR TIME???
posted on September 25, 2002 11:41:57 AM new
You are missing the point! I don't like having to wade through things I am not looking for because someone uses a key word so their item comes up, when it is NOT the item I am looking for. I DID read the ad and saw what she was doing, and I DO NOT LIKE IT. I am not the ebay police and I have not "turned her in" NOR do I plan to. Geez, why are you so upset? Are they YOUR auctions? Or do you do the same thing with other items? Maybe you would feel differentl if you came across that in something you were looking for, and mabe not. We all have our own threshold of annoyance for some things.

Hi coralreef!
I feel your pain
The SPAM factor is completely destroying the search feature when it comes to designer items.
Ever hear of a brand of jeans named SEVEN? Type in a search for
SEVEN JEANS (womens clothing) and find over 350 items.
How many are actually SEVEN jeans and how many throw 'seven' into the title to get in on the action?
Less than 50% are actually the item searched for.
Those of you who do not shop eBay for designer items may not realize how much of a problem this is.
Looking for JUICY COUTURE clothing for a holiday gift?
hundreds of items come up in the search, few are the real deal.
A Brighton purse? anthropologie shirt?
I could list them for weeks.
so...
As a buyer, I can relate to your Kate Spade issue. I hate having to sift through the junk to find what I asked for.
As a seller, I wonder how many newbies get turned off before they find the *real* item they are searching for
Usually, if enough complaints reported, eBay will end the auction. Who has the time to bother though? Not me!
Counterfeits are illegal.
Knockoffs are 100% legitimate, but can not use the copyrighted name of designer!

I always figure those who are hostile about threads like this probably have the same type of auctions. JMHO.
Coralreef said the "auction seemed misleading" and "keyword spamming is more like it." This wasn't just Kate Spade. The keyword spamming was Kate Spade, Gucci, Fendi and Barbie (at the bottom.) I am also assuming that naming different categories of items at the bottom will also get them more free space.
The title on this auction was to mislead, that was its major function. Otherwise it would have said "BLACK Bird Purse Bag + Wholesale List!"
This kind of seller keeps a lot of people from using eBay I would guess. There has to be others who no longer search, besides myself. I had regularly searched two broad categories. I was tired of finding “Screw eBay” CDs & other items with key word spamming mucking up the pages. I gave up searching. This has to be happening to others too.
The sexy ads & key word spamming auctions and eBay’s slowness (or doing nothing) at ending them is changing eBay into less than a yard sale place. Like I said JMHO.
I have purchased two items in about 8 months and no longer search. I figure I may pay a little more for it elsewhere online or at a B&M, but have saved a lot of time NOT surfing through keyword spam.

Yea I know what ya mean. I was looking for a Kate Spade List and I had to go through hundreds of those dang bags before I found this auction. They shoul ban evryone of those that arent selling a list because that is what I was searching for. HAr de har Har har

Off-topic, I know, but I couldn't let this go by without comment.
coralreef, you may be shocked and dismayed to learn that *genuine* Coach products are now being manufactured in China! I was in a Coach Factory Store yesterday. With only one exception, every handbag I looked at was marked "made in China". That one exception was marked "made in Mexico".
Repeat, these are *real* Coach products being sold in retail stores and factory stores. It's absolutely appalling.
As far as the original topic of this thread goes, it is most DEFINITELY keyword-spamming. I trust someone turned this seller in.

Well guess what?
I DON'T use that method in my auctions!!!
Never did, never will!
We don't live in a perfect world! There are alot of things that annoy me, too, but instead of getting bent, I choose those with which I can live and avoid those that I can't!

What is the problem,
The Purse and the List are both perfectly ok to sell on Ebay.
It does not break any Ebay rules.
I give this seller credit for been so creative!
If you took the time to read the description you would see it says -
"NOTICE - this purse is NOT brand name nor does it have any brand name labels"
Thats pretty clear to me!
The seller is also very clear on what is for auction -
"This auction is for two things - #1: You get a 5 PAGE Wholesale list that contains HUNDREDS of Company Names, Phone/Fax Numbers, Websites and Email Addresses where you can find Kate Spade, Gucci, Fendi + many other items at great prices..... #2: You get this AWESOME NEW purse pictured above by 'Discover Fashions'"
As well look at the feedback, people are very happy with this sellers bags.
No keyword spamming , the seller is selling a list to buy those brand names wholesale.
If they used those brand names in the listing for the bag alone,,then yes that is keyword spamming.
People that worry about auctions like this really need to get out of the house once and a while, go for a walk or ride your bike, take the kids to the park...anything than sitting in front of your PC looking at other peoples auctions to complain about.
The original poster more than likly has no plans to buy a Kate Spade bag or any other designer name...

It looks like ebay needs to make clearer examples for the keyword spam. Looks like a few AW posters may have turned in this sellers already.
If it's not an ebay violation then they won't pull it.
