My father is in Port Charlotte between St. Petersburg and Ft. Lauderdale right on the Gulf. I cannot get in touch with him. Hopefully, he has evacuated.

I'm listening to a live stream that someone posted on another board and they said Charlotte Harbor is getting hit very bad. The eye of the storm is passing through Punta Gorda.
I hope your father is safe and evacuated!

I'm pretty worried as well. My father is almost 70. This home was his dream retirement home and now I suppose there won't be much left for him. Have you heard from your sister at all? My prayers are with you and with everyone down there. My brother is coming over here later so we can sit together. Let me know if you hear anything at all.

Cheryl - if he went to a shelter then they won't let them out until THEY decide to let them out (which is another reason outside of my dog that you won't catch me in one of those...) which might not be until tomorrow. I heard from people during Opal that they lock the doors and you're stuck there.
But then we tried to get back in town the day after Opal and they still had the beach road blocked off and wouldn't let anybody in. (I won't tell you we ran the roadblock - but we did. I said "what are they going to do? Shoot you? Just keep going!" By that time we had already spent hours and hours on the road and I just wanted to get HOME! But to them, since the power was out, they didn't want anybody in the area.)
If there's damage to the area they worry about looters and injury and even if you live there they won't let you in.
We will cross our fingers and say a prayer for you but I'm sure they evacuated the area and he's ok, but just unable to phone out until tomorrow.
Then they even set up tents so that people can phone their relatives free.

It's still pretty clam here in Jacksonville - so I'm sure Ralphie is ok for now.
They are saying that the beaches will get the worst of it here - unless it turns again.
Cheryl & Diane - we will all pray for your love ones. Please let us know when you hear something.

Cheryl - you think the storm rolls through and you can go back home...but that's not the way it happens. I think we were without power for 3 or 4 days after...and that was the day after the storm. So if they're in a shelter, the might not let them out until the power is restored....
We made coffee on the grill and ate all of the good food out of the freezer for those days. We had to eat the ice cream first of course. As a matter of fact when we bought our newest grill a month ago, it had the side burner on it and I said, great...we can make coffee after the hurricane! Not to make light of it all but seriously...just hang in there. They had time to evacuate and the police are serious about getting people OUT of there. Unless he had a cell phone (and THAT could be out also) he won't have any way of getting in touch with you.

Here's a radar image of Charlie as seen from the NWS Radar at Tampa. In the column at the left, under Composite Reflectivity, if you click on Loop, you can see the movement for the past hour:

Thanks everyone! I'll just have to sit tight. Hopefully, when evacuation took place he decided to drive up here to Ohio where his family is. However, knowing him he stayed there with his belongings. He just bought himself a boat, too. What a shame all of this is. At his age it's tough to think about starting over! On my dad's side I have one natural brother, three half brothers and two half sisters. So, he's got plenty of family if he needs us. He and my mother are also still on really good terms so she and her husband would also be willing to help him and his wife out! We're LARGE and extended family.

Cheryl,Hi all and thank you for all your kind thoughts, we have come through this unscathed, just now we are having a bad thunderstorm. I am on the east coast in Stuart the only area that you can see clearly on the Florida map. They have been saying on TV, that they turned off the power on the west coast from Fort Meyer north including your Fathers area. This was done about 3 hours before the storm was due to hit. They figured it would save much damage due to electric surges and fallen live electric lines. Maybe if your Dad's phone is one that works with electric is a reason why you can not reach him. They are also saying after the storm that people wise everything seems to be OK, they have not done anything with property damage evaluation yet, but have stressed that there were not any people casualties.
Hi toasted, if it is suggested that you leave please do so. they are interviewing some people on TV that stayed and they said never again. I will be thinking of you and everyone else in Charlie's path and saying my prayers.
Got to go, it is lightning like crazy but wanted to get this in.

Oh my gosh! I just read the news and there have been numerous deaths and so many without homes. It looks just like it did after Andrew came through. If anyone does decide to donate anything, please don't donate clothes. The clothes that got donated for Andrew victims were piled in a parking lot and it rained and ruined all of the clothes. It's better to make a donation to the Red Cross. The Red Cross came into the developments giving us water and food. They were a godsend for those of us who had absolutely nothing left.
My heart goes out to those familes who have lost loved ones and also to those who are now going to have to rebuild not just their homes but their lives.

Wanted to let everyone know my dad is okay. I was able to get a hold of his cell phone number. Thankfully, they were in Orlando when it hit because Port Charlotte got hit with a 15ft wall of water! They've heard from others in Port Charlotte. His house was spared!!!!!!!! The houses around him were not. So, whoever was praying last night - thank you!!!!!!!! It worked. His boat is no longer there, but at least he still has a home.
Right now they are trying to get back into Port Charlotte, but are having no luck. I'll keep everyone posted. He said he'd call after they assess the damages to the area.

What a relief Cheryl !! I'm So happy your father and his house are OK,So many did not get so lucky. All those people without power ,homes ...loss of family members . It's very sad .We were very lucky here in Beaufort S.C. the storm leaped frog over us and came back in above Charleston...Hardly any rain or wind.Worried about wgm cause Myrtle Beach is getting hit hard with rain right now.

I'm glad to see that you and Ralphie are OK. I was really worried about the two of you. We had a hurricane coming this way about 3 years ago. I wouldn't have left Gunther either.
Diane, Cheryl and all the others, I was also very relieved to hear that your family members came through the storm without being hurt. They can replace boats and cars, as long as they still have their homes and were not hurt.

Also, the Red Cross really DOES do good work if anybody wants to contribute. I had quite a few much needed free meals from them after Opal.
