Okay, it's now 6:17 PM here in Iowa and I can't get into any part of PayPal - keep getting that annoying "operation timed out" error message.

Is there life after PayPal?

I have not been able to do anything for a few days? At least I could log on last night - can't even do that now. Hope they get this fixed soon!

It has the classic characteristics of a denial of service attack. They must have picked the wrong person to try to pull a chargeback on.

Just managed to get in about 10 minutes ago...everything's still there, but I printed the overview and history pages to be on the safe side. I wouldn't advise taking anything out (unless you have an ATM down the street) until the fix the mess to some extent . Otherwise, who knows where your money will end up.

News story just appeard on Reuters:

http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=internetNews&storyID=6471116

Quote:
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - PayPal, eBay Inc.'s (EBAY.O: Quote, Profile, Research) online payment service, has had intermittent glitches in its system since late last week and is working to fix the problems with payment processing, log-ins and new account creation, the company said on Monday.
"We are working furiously. ... We have all resources dedicated to getting it fixed as soon as possible," PayPal spokeswoman Amanda Pires told Reuters.

Pires said the problem appeared to be related to a coding update late on Thursday. "We haven't found the ultimate cause," she added.

It was not immediately clear how widespread the problems were, although eBay's message boards were filled with postings about the glitches.

Michael Bokan, of West Charlton, New York, told Reuters PayPal usually processes 5 to 10 payments a day on orders from his fly-fishing equipment Web site flyshack.com.

Bokan, who said he can see payment requests being sent to PayPal, said no payments came through on Friday, less than half than normal were processed over the weekend and just one was done on Monday.

Yep, it is still not working. I had a buyer say they would pay immediately by PayPal just now. I can't get at all, the message is 'can't find server'. I warned them it is not working well. I can't believe something that has worked so well for so long now is totally fubar, it must be because it is part of eBay now.

Things may be on the mend now. I've gotten two payments from PayPal this evening. With one, I got an e-mail from PayPal--the usual. With the other, I happened to see it in my account--still no notification in e-mail. Oh well.

I would be a little troubled by their explanation that these problems started after some code was added for an update. Any programmer would have a contingency plan to immediately return to square one if an update started to turn sour. Ebay has done this on a couple of occasions on their site. I would imagine Paypal would have the same safety net in place. Even Bidpay was able to reappear as their old selves after the name change fiasco. My guess it that unless the Paypal programmers are extremely stupid, the site has been compromised from the outside. If so, they've had enough time to siphon a good number of credit card numbers, passwords and other personal data. If I were a Paypal user, I would keep a very close eye on my credit card account activity and start changing passwords.

I think this was probably the fault of that balding guy with three chins they put on the Paypal homepage a couple days ago.

That neck should be throbbing like a frogs.

He really freaks me out!

Jack - if you did a transfer from your banck account into your PayPal account and you don't do that on a regular basis, it's going to take a few days before it is available to you.

On a different note - I'm glad the site is back up and I can receive payments, I just wish they would get the debit card issue cleared up. I'm still trying to pay one of my suppliers for an order and the card is declining. Good thing I am a night owl. They are in Asia, so this is their work day. Luckily I was able to direct them to one of the news sories to explain what the card problem is and they have agreed to go ahead and start processing the order while we wait for PayPal to get the wrinkles out. Hopefully that happens by morning since I need to use that pesky little piece of plastic at the post office.

It's not back up for me, in PA. I've tried 8 times so far & only once managed to get to "log in" & it took forever to get there.

But that's as far as I got, then it went down.

McJ - I just sent a payment to one of my vendors and did have some issues with it timing out a couple times. Thats caused by heavy traffic as opposed to the old problem. I'm sure it's going to be a bit of a slow go much of the day as people try to take care of all the transactions they were not able to take care of yesterday. Good luck and just have a little patience.

Longtime1 I imagine you are correct - Technical difficulties doesn't ring true, the longer the site stayed down, it would seem more like a hacker attack!

eBAY - the company which changes that which is functioning well - and screws it up royally

PERSONALLY, the next time I can get into PayPal, I'm changing my PASSWORD. Regardless if they admit to hacking or not.

I was able to use my debit card today, and if you go to Google you can get into your Paypal account. I withdrew $100.00 there with no problems. I am sure they will have it fixed in a couple of days anyhow.

On a more serious note....if anything, once we find out what is going on with the site, I'm sure there will be a good explanation..

However...this ought to be a red flag to eBay and Pay Pal that they really need to
get more serious about addressing the high
volume of hackers and spoof emails that are
wrecking havoc with all our lives and auctions. This effects us all.....

eBay goes down like this ALL THE TIME...
as annoying as it is, if both companies
addressed the problem, there would be a
lot more "good faith" (to use their terminology) amongst the masses that pay to use their services....

Come on Meg...use a little of that profit
to IMPROVE the navigation and system. Greed sucks.
