Gtootie and Helga
Please don't take anything anyone said the wrong way. When you ask for help here or share problems here, you sometimes get blunt answers. And sometimes, that's what you need to hear.
Why in the devil would you worry about your former employers unemployment rates? They are NOT going to go through the roof. The insurance is paid for for a reason. They can't lay someone else off just because you filed for unemployment. They'd be in violation of all sorts of employment laws and I'm sure the HR department is aware of that. File for it. You paid for it - indirectly.
I've been sitting here thinking about what I could do if I were living rent free and didn't have to pay for food. I'd be in pretty good shape. There are thousands and thousands of people out of work. Most of them have families to support - children. People are losing their homes everyday because of this and they don't have family they can turn to. Many, many people are going to have a bleak Christmas this year. Christmas is for children and those are the ones that will suffer. I might suggest you go and volunteer at a homeless shelter during the holidays or a home for mothers and children just to get an idea of how good you actually have it.
It's easy to feel depressed during the holidays if your life hasn't turned out how you wanted it. It's harder to take that depression and turn it into a positive thing - like volunteering to make someone else's life better. No matter how hard we think we have it, there is always someone else who has it worse. Try to remember that. My work has taught me this is a big way. I work with people who have AIDS and I see their suffering each and every day. They go through it and they don't complain. They look for the bright side of life and revel in it when they find it.
We all have a path to follow in this life and no one promised it would be an easy one. How you handle the "downs" will determine where your path ultimately leads.
Having said all that, I hope things get better for you both.
Cheryl

Cheryl, not trying to sound uppity here, but most of the states Ive worked in, they take out a tiny bit of UI *unemployment insurance* from the employee, too. So she may have directly paid for it as well as the employer. Whatever her reasons, she didnt go, didnt want to go and it might be too late to file - I dont know. (Maybe like her OP said, she thought her ebay business could sustain her?) If you're on unemployment you have to be actively looking for a job and any job at your old rate and position comprebable is supposed to do. (So if you'd rather really not be looking or take just about anything, you could run into a snag with that!)

We have 4 children and 10 grandchildren. 3 of our 4 kids are really struggling financially. For 2 of them we have had to take out loans in the last 2 months to pay their mortgages to save them losing their homes and being put out on the streets. We have all decided this year not to give gifts. We are all going to get together, bring what food we can, and celebrate the real meaning of Christmas. Children seem to have far too much these days anyway, and we all feel that it will be a good time to explain to them all that Christmas is a lot more than giving gifts. I have bought some things from garage sales so they have a little gift to open from Grandma and Grandpa.
We have so much to be thankful for, just look at some of the pictures of people in other countries on the news, we are rich compared with many of them.
Yes, it's hard to be broke, none of us would choose that, but we are not as "broke" as millions of people in this world.

Here in Ohio, I'm not sure if it comes out of your paycheck. I do payroll, but I work for a non-profit which is not required to pay into the system. My comment was based upon that. Also, you are right about looking for another job while on unemployment. Actively looking for work is something that should be done anyway. Why not collect unemployment while doing so. I was on unemployment once. They did not expect me to take an inferior job at lesser pay. I was on it until it ran out because I couldn't find a comparable job at comparable pay. If they expected me to take any job, they would have expected me to apply at McDonalds. They didn't. Maybe it varies from state-to-state though.

i think they expect you to actively look for a job,and you have to give them the name of companies you apply .
If a person is fired rather than terminated,i am not sure if unemployment still apply or if a person quits voluntarily,i dont think you get unemployment benefits???
walk into any all you can eat buffet place and see how much we load up on the plate, give you an idea how blessed we are!!

You are correct, Cheryl. I am sure it depends on the state. But I think most of them have about the same generalized rules in that you have to be actively seeking employment and depending on what you do, it is not always easy to come up with the required documented two-three jobs per week supposedly applied for to get your check. And some, like here, do not accept resumes sent to po boxes as a legitmate job search without some preapproval or some rigmarole, if that. I know lots of people coast on unemployment for a bit, or for even the whole term. Some consider it an owed extented vacation or something . I think its a lot easier to get caughtup in doing that nowadays because of the technology available, although I dont know how together any of the states have it to actively check it out for so many unemployed. I imagine tyhough some gung ho agent gets lucky sometimes if they care to pursuit it for their government, or that is their job to do? Whether theres charges leveled against somebody 'coasting', or even those unable to find jobs to apply to that are comparable, I dont know. But I bet you wind up lieing just to keep getting your check either way. And then you would probably wind up having to repay them the money gained if nothing else.... and find you are just deeper in a hole than where you before, because that money probably been long spent. - Thats what I meant by snag.

Boy, I do remember the job search! I was one of those that actually went on interviews. I'm too chicken of being caught! When I went for my unemployment reviews, I wanted to be able to look the reviewer in the eye and know I wasn't fibbing. I'm a baaaaaaaad liar!
Stop
You are so right about those buffets. We go to one here when we have my daughter and granddaughter with us. Saves us a ton of money on eating. Now, if we could just figure out how to "doggie bag" what we don't eat. You can still get unemployment if you were fired or quit. It depends upon the circumstances.

You can only qualify fer UE if you were "laid-off" or "let-go" -- NOT if you were FIRED "for cause!"
The UE office sends a form to yer employer for the details of the dismissal, &, if it were "FOR CAUSE," ye be SOL... you do have the right to appeal via the CIRCULAR FILE
IOW: if one is canned for groping the waitresses or pinching the profits, one ain't gonna be COLLECTING UE

Tom, I was fired, but received unemployment. But, they (unemployment) found my firing unjustified and I qualified.

All I can say, Helga, is THANK GOD yer prayers were answered & PREZ DUBYA was re-elected!
His DOMESTIC agenda is truly heart-warming in it's total scorn & contempt for the American middle- and working-class citizens...
As he courageously strives to make PERMANENT his reprehensible tax give-aways to his fat-cat rich friend scumbags like good ole "Kenny-Boy" Lay, he turns his brainless attention now to the much awaited...
DESTRUCTION of SOCIAL SECURITY: here's a little tidbit ole Karl Rove kept tucked behind his back BEFORE the election:
"The plan (Bush's SS roadmap fer DISASTER) also would beef up incentives for savings, repeal the deduction for state and local taxes, increase the standard deduction, reduce the number of brackets and tax most Social Security benefits and employer-provided health benefits.
It's sooooo important to transfer TAX LIABILITY from those who can afford it the MOST to those who can afford it the LEAST!
NOW, I think it's time to take another look at: SCHOOL LUNCHES...that GOP plan to re-classify KETCHUP and MUSTARD as VEGETABLES in order to save a whole 3cents off the backs of poor kids sounds GOOD to me -- I'm sure there are a whole bunch of un-ethical scumbags in the GOP Congress who really resent dat 3cents!
