Finding someone else's cash is the ultimate test, especially when you're broke. At an estate sale, I found a hidden wallet from the deceased with 1100 bucks in it. Man, was it tempting! "They won't miss it." "I need it more than they do." "The prices here are a rip-off." I turned it in and they gave me $100 and I felt pretty good about it.

What a thought-provoking question. I guess I have a sliding scale of ethics and morals....a disappointing realization!

I returned money that was left all over the floor of a department store dressing room (it must have dropped out of someone's pocket). I have no idea what the saleslady did with it...probably kept it!

I've stopped 1 pickpocketing on a public bus(and got punched in the nose for it, too!) Stopped a purse snatcher in Italy from taking a purse off the back of a woman's chair (stood up from my cafe' seat and shouted to the guy to "PUT THAT DOWN!"-- and he did!)

A bank clerk cashed my $10 check (I was a starving college student) with a $100. On my way out, I discovered this mistake, turned around (actually stood in line again) and gave it back to her...she never said thank you and was mean and nasty about it, too!

But the other day I found an entire book of postage stamps left behind on the post office counter and, God, I hate to admit this...I took them!

I believe in Karma too, so I am pretty worried.

Thinking back on the elderly gentleman at the estate sale-- I probably would have returned the money.

This is hard one for sure. I may have to keep a 10% FINDER'S FEE!!!!! $200.00 was a pretty cheap reward - considering the guy didn't have a clue the money was in there.

I hate to say it but, if the money was given back to the niece and nephew without the old man knowing, he will probably never see it.
But, I would have returned it too.

I agree with ladyjewels. It was right for him to return it but I think the reward should have been greater.

Story out of a suburb in Milwaukee - A Lady found $500.00 on the street last week. She went to the police station and turned it in. Get this - if the person who lost it doesn't claim it in 5 days the City will keep the money. Doesn't the money belong to who found it, well according to the city no it belongs to them. Now anyone who finds money in that city will never turn it in again. The losers are the person who lost it and the person who finds it. The city which has done nothing reaps the profit. Go figure.

I'm STILL waiting for one of those big black plastic garbage bags to wash up on the beach here! And no, I wouldn't call anybody on that!

Follow-up on the $500.00. The Cudahy city atty checked the Wisconsin State Statues, and discovered that they have to give the money to the person that turned it in.

OK ... Being honest here ... I would give it back. Blame it on my Catholic upbringing. I could never keep something that belonged to someone else -- especially an elderly gentleman. I would feel so guilty. But then again, I'm the type that if a clerk gives me too much change back, I give it back. Now my boyfriend is another story ...

Technically, the money belongs to the elderly gentleman. It's obvious he misplaced it as he would not put $27K in a box and sell it for a few bucks. However, returning it to the kids who were running the sale, it's highly unlikely they would return it to the owner. They would probably keep it themselves. If it were me, I would do the only logical thing and donate it to my favorite charity, The Vendio Distressed Seller's Relief and Entertainment Fund.

GOOD ANSWER............

I remember when some kid caught a home run ball & I think it was hit by Mark McGuire, it broke some kind of record. The kid, on TV, gave the ball back to McGuire.
If I'm not mistaken McGuire also hit some other balls that were later sold for thousands of dollars. Of course all the kid got was a thanks & I've often wondered if he ever regretted handing the ball over instead of selling it. No one even remembers his name, just the stupid thing he did for his 15 minutes of fame.

I think the 200.00 reward for returning 27,000 was a cheap & lousy way of saying "thanks"
And I'm also sure the niece & nephew in turn stole the money from the old man.

The returnee made a mistake by returning the money to the wrong people.

mcjane~

Besides which, I thought this was a yard sale!

If I had returned the $17,000, and they said, "Oh, thank you so very much, we would like to offer you $200.00"

Well...I'm afraid I would have to answer:

"That's so very kind of you, but I really can't take less than $500.00"

Funny one, upriver! It's so late that it took me a few seconds to get it. I needed a good chuckle!

Roadsmith~

And you know, you can only get a good chuckle here on Vendio.

Do a current search on eBay, and you will find there are no Good Chuckles available, even at a Buy It Now price.

However (changing the subject in midstream),
I find it fascinating that there are 257 current auctions with these keywords in the title: START NEW SEARCH
