I just sold something to an actor named Jason Beghe. He's a character actor, sort of like an Ed Harris type of character, and he's been in films like "G.I. Jane". I just sold to him, actually. The funny part about the story is that I know about him from a store I used to work in- he purchased several suits and spent a lot of money. So, years later, he now buys a shirt from me on ebay. I had a suit that ended with no bids and he was offering to purchase it for like 50% of the starting bid. Since I knew who he was, I told him I couldn't come down. I also added in that I used to ring him up at the store in which I worked. He ended up buying the suit anyway.

well, I once had some rare poster material from BUS STOP with Marilyn Monroe. I sold it to the director's daughter! I also had a fabulous original photograph with a stamp on a back of Marilyn from her early days (all about eve) and sold it to the Academy of Motion Picture arts and sciences. And I had a poster from a silent film which pictured a big silent star and a relatively unknown young man. I told it to the young man's granddaughter!

Hi Everyone

I sold a Pee Wee Herman LP to the person who wrote most of the songs on the LP. That was pretty neat.

Here is a story that MAY fit here. I sell Olympic pins on Ebay and I get my pins by trading with people at the Olympic games. I have a pretty impressive display for trading. Imagine a 6'5" 265 pound man wearing a Bright pink, orange, and yellow Food Service Smock from the 1984 olympics covered with about 500 pins. That means I am covered from chin to knee with pins. Anyhow, I was in Athens running around the Main Stadium Complex and I heard that Katie Couric had a special pin made for the Olympics. I had a standing offer of 100 Euro for one of these pins. So, naturally, I headed out to the today set. Over several days, I noticed that when people left the set, they went out the left side door and on to golf carts to be wisked to the Green Room, about 1/2 mile away in the VIP area. So one day I stood in the eating area (outside a hot dog stand) right next to that door and next to the Golf Carts. Once the show ended people began to take off, and the stars were taping to promo's for the next day. As people walked out the door, they walked right into my huge body/bill board. I made a few trades but got none of the covetted Couric pins. After a couple of minutes, 2 girls and two women walked out. One of the girls squealed "OOOOO PINS."

Now, I paid about $.03 each for my pins because I bought them in a lot of about 700,000. Since I have almost nothing in them, I make it a basic policy to make every trade offered. In addition, if someone is nice and has no pins, I keep some of the less popular ones in the change pockets and give out freebies.

These girls come up and ask to trade. I tell them they can take anything they want. They start giving me the Today show pin (nice pin, maybe $7 retail at the time). So they start pointing and I don't negociate, I just give them the pins they want. They count out an give me 10 pins for the 10 they picked. The older girl said, "Is it ok that we are giving you the same pin over and over?"

I said, "Sure, what do I care. They are nice pins, you are nice girls, if you want to trade more, I'm fine with it."

"OH, your easy to trade with... YOu want one of my mother's pins?" She shows it to me... OOOONG! the couric pin. So I tell her I'll give her whatever she wants. So she takes a pin. just then Katie Couric walks out and the girls see her, "MOM! THis is the Nicest trader" so Katie couric comes over and starts to look.

She asks "Did you get one of my pins?" as she takes out her BAG of them.

I say, "Yes, but I have lots of friends who want them, if you are willing to trade me a few more, I would be most greatful"

She picks out 7 pins and says "could I give you 7 of them? I don't have anything else to trade right now"

"Sure, I'll take whatever you want to trade. Like they said, 'I'm easy'" was my reply.

She ended up giving me about 10 of them. She asked my name. The next day she saw me walking around and came up to me and said, "Hi Dan, Thanks again"

I mean, she remembered my name... I am kind of hard to miss, but it was still pretty cool.

I ran into her again a week later and she said hi again, but this time she didn't have time to trade.

I LOVED the pin/couric story! You made it all so real and vivid!

So did you buy the smock on Ebay?

I have to admit I don't think I'd follow my DH around with him looking like that - even to meet Katie Couric.

Great story dejapooh. Although I am not a fan of hers but I did like her husband when I think he was on the Geraldo show.

I searched your auctions during Salt Lake City. I bought the Mardi Gras and Garage Sale pin. I didn't buy any from you but others. I really liked the locker pin but didn't get it. Are you going to the Olympics next year?

Thanks. It is an easy story to tell because it is so weird, but all olympics are weird. In general they involve my working 17 to 20 hours a day for 17 to 20 days without a break. I've been lucky a few times and gotten to trade in the village. I remember once, I was given a pass to trade in the Village in Barcelona every day of the games. I made friends with a woman Cyclist. The day of her competition she came around to where I set up to trade a hang out for a while after dinner. After about an hour I asked her when she was competing again and she said that she wasn't. I asked what she meant. She said that that afternoon was her last competition.

I asked, "Really, how did you do?"

She said, "Not bad..." and reached into her bag and pulled out a gold medal... She had a big smile. It was very cool. She let me try it on...

Once in Athens, I was able to get into the village again and asked a person I had just traded with how she did. She got as big a smile as my friend from Barcelona and said, "I got 73rd!"

I've got about 20,000 stories about the games since I've gone to so many. These last games were my 8th. Torino will be my 9th. I am bringing a friend to run Ebay for me while I am at the games. Our deal? I supply the pins, he has to give me 8 hours a day listing and mailing. I pay him 20% of the gross toward his expenses (I am paying for everything) until he is paid off, and then 10% of the gross there after. After he gives me his 8 hours he can go to events (on my tickets) or just run around town. If you've never gone to the Olympics, you should try it once. It is the most amazing party in the world. Music, and art all over the place. I am not sure what I am going to do for Vancouver. My friend who is going to Torino will probably not want to go to Vancouver in 2010. I will have to find another employee... Maybe I'll post here to get one

As for the Smocks, They are Food Service Jerseys left over from the 1984 olympics. I bought one in LA after the Surplus Auctions for about $3. I went to a pin show last year and found another in my size (triple Xtra Large, Extra long), a large for my wife, and 2 smalls for my kids (they will be 8 when we go to Beijing... That will be their first Olympics). The four I found last Oct. cost a total of $25.

I sold a ton after the Games in SLC, in fact I still have a few left... somewhere. I sold quite a few after Athens, but the market flattened pretty quickly, so I have a lot of nice things that it doesn't pay for me to list. I will be listing a TON of pins during Torino. I hope as many as 100 3 day auction starts a day... If my friend can handle that, I think we will end up making good money on these games. I doubt I will be able to make much money on Beijing. I guess it depends on the Yuan. Generally, I find that pins at the games sell for the price of a normal lunch. About $5 or $6 now in the US. About 5 or 6 Euros in Athens. A typical lunch in Beijing costs about $1, so I don't think I will make my money back on that trip. I am going there for fun and to train my kids in the business so they will be ready for 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2018 (at which point they will leave for collage and can attned if they want or get out of the business if they want). Maybe I'll take the risk and pay for an Ebay mule... I don't know.
