Re Walmart - Sams Club gas. I would imagine that you have to insert your Sam's Club card first and then insert your debit card when the Sam's Club card is accepted to get gas. I have a Cosco card and that is the way it works with them.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The U.S.
Department of Energy will approve a request for a loan of oil from the country's Strategic Petroleum Reserve later on Wednesday, to offset oil production losses out of the Gulf of Mexico due to Hurricane Katrina, a spokesman said.
The price of U.S. crude sank quickly below $70 after the government said it would tap the reserve.

Doesn't it seem odd that the price dropped below $70 so quickly after the announcement? I'm sorry, but this entire thing is nothing more than gouging. Does anyone remember the gouging after 9/11? IMO, this is no different. The gas station down the road from me has not had a new delivery of gasoline since last Monday (the 22nd). However, they saw fit to raise the price .25 per gallon anyway. A friend of mine confronted the gas station manager about it. She asked why he raised the price when it was the same gasoline from last week? He simply turned and walked away without answering her question.
Until we change our driving habits, nothing is going to change. They have to feel it in their wallets. To the oil companies, we are invisible consumers. We have changed our driving habits. We no longer take unnecessary trips. If we go shopping, we plan it out by taking the shortest route and getting everything we may need for the week. If I forgot anything, I walk to the drug store, which is only 1/2 mile away.

Gassed up Monday at $2.67, today it's $3.29. Wisconsin has a very high state gas tax.

Beaufort, huh? I'm virtually your neighbor -- in Walterboro, SC -- filled one van Monday night at 2.41 -- this morning it was 2.99. One station at 2.56 yesterday was out. Shell has 2.79 -- such a deal!
So my question is, are you folks all traveling this week end? I'm supposed to do a show in Charlotte, but now I'm starting to wonder if I can even GET gas to come back, Friends in Atlanta report outages, and NC border at Spartanburg seems to have occasional shortages now.
A friend talked to someone last week, long before Katrina, who told him gas was going to be $4 by Labor Day. Close enough.
Have to admit it's hard to think about antiques, shows and eBay when millions are homeless, countless are dead, and lives have been shattered. Absolutely incomprehensible and it's only begun.
At the same time, I see listings are up, average selling price seems steady, so maybe it's "what are you gonna do, just keep going." Comments from fellow eBayers?

take some gas cans with you if you travel - that was the recommendation my DH got from someone in Birmingham AL where he's going this weekend. He uses diesel so it's always harder to come by anyway - but the guy in Birmingham says that they are being rationed to 20 gallons per vehicle.
Does anybody remember this happening after Camille? I don't.

If you can't purchase sufficient fuel on the road to make a round trip, then stay home. DO NOT fill up five gallon gas cans and carry them in the trunk of a car, or in any other part of the vehicle. This was a common practice in 1973 during the Arab oil embargo and the resultant gas shortages. A routine minor rear end collission can, and often did, transform a car into a fiery grave for the victims. It's illegal in many states, not only from the safety aspect, but because of hazmat transportation regulations. In California, you would have to have a CDL endorsement for hazardous materials on your drivers license, a one million dollar hazmat liability policy and the vehicle would have to have the appropriate warning placards attached.

or maybe that was $20.00 worth of gas instead of gallons....
Sorry - didn't mean to alarm anybody about the gas cans. The DH has a TRUCK and I don't think there's a law against carrying a gas can in the back of a pick up truck bed.

By the middle of September, those who can find $3.25 per gallon gas will be fortunate. Expect to see $4.00 to $4.50 per gallon in many places. In remote places, such as the Rockies, or the deserts, don't be surprised to see $5.00 per gallon in a few places. Get ready for weekly fuel surcharge adjustments for UPS and FedEx, and possibly for the first time, package service from the USPS.

You go, Jack! I couldn't agree more!!! While watching the news this morning I heard a reporter call it gouging and compared it to what happened immediately after 9/11 with the gasoline prices. No need for it to rise so much in such a short amount of time. I have written my congressman and fortunately, mine doesn't sit around dreaming of what to do. He does it. When stations rose the prices after 9/11, he asked us to let him know which stations were gouging. We told him and he paid a personal visit to them. Ha, ha, ha. The gas was immediately lowered and some station owners were prosecuted. The same gas these stations had last week is not costing them more money this week. It's still sitting underground in their tanks. GOUGING.

Kucinich: Gas Price Spike Act Will Lower Gas Prices
Washington, Aug 11 - With gas prices skyrocketing out of control in Northeast Ohio and nationwide, Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich (D-OH), today, renewed his fight to pass HR 2070, The Gas Price Spike Act of 2005. The legislation, introduced by Kucinich in May, currently is co-sponsored by 37 Members of Congress.
The bill will address the spike in the price of gasoline by placing a windfall profits tax on oil companies; giving tax credits for the purchase of ultra efficient vehicles; and provide federal grants to reduced mass transit fares.
“Consumers in Northeast Ohio, and nationwide, are being gouged at the pump,” stated Kucinich. “The only thing rising faster than the price of gasoline right now is the skyrocketing profits of the oil companies.”
“Congress can no longer sit on the sidelines and watch as skyrocketing prices continue to take a heavy economic toll on consumers and risks further harming our economy,” continued Kucinich. “Congress must act immediately upon returning in September, and I am renewing my efforts to pass HR 2070, and bring immediate relief to consumers.”
Kucinich’s bill will:
· Institute a windfall profit tax on gasoline and diesel. Such a tax is to be imposed on all industry profits that are above a reasonable profit level. This proposal would not increase the cost of gasoline because this proposal does not tax the price of gasoline. It only taxes excessive profits of refineries and distributors. Any attempt to increase prices to recover the lost revenue in taxes is simply taxed at 100% making the price increase worthless.
· Transfer the revenue from the windfall profits tax to Americans who would buy ultra efficient cars, made in America, with a tax credit. These will be made directly available to the purchaser of a car that traveled over 65 miles on a single gallon of gas. Today average cars get less than 30 miles per gallon.
· Establishes a broad based, far reaching program to promote mass rail transit inter- an intra- city. The bill makes funding available to regional transit authorities to offset significantly reduced mass transit fares during times of gas price spikes.
Way to go, Dennis! Let's hope he can get this passed.

$3.09/$3.29/$3.39
I knew prices would increase in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. But didn’t think they would jump 30 or more cents in the span of a few hours.
Here, a $25 limit at most stations in this county. Only exception Diesel for trucks at the interstate truck stops. The price is a BIG issue but even worse many stations are out so the NO GAS issue is bigger,
The mayor of Charlotte had a press confrence at 11am (a few minutes ago) that the gas shortage is only temporary- not to get panicky, the operations at some distribution center are up and running.
All-in-all gas prices are a small matter when taking in consideration the plight of those poor poor people in LA,MS,and AL

Who in their right mind would invest good cash in an oil company? They'll rip off the shareholders the same as they do motorists. They pulled this shortage scam in the 70's and a lot of people remember it. Home Depot, Servicemaster, Caterpillar. These are the types of companies that will be picking up the pieces and putting things back together again for years. Massive federal contracts and insurance $$$ coming their way.

As far as the Wal-Mart & Sam's Club gas stations - In my experience:
Stations located at Wal-Mart stores offer 3 cents off per gallon when a Wal-Mart gift card is used to pay for the gas. You can only buy as much gas as you have money on the gift card this way.
Stations located at Sam's Club, at least in our area, offer the above mentioned discount, plus Sam's members get 5 cents off per gallon (cannot be combined with above 3 cent discount) and can pay with Sam's credit line (if you have one), regular credit/debit card, or WM/SC gift card.
Unfortunately, our Sam's gas station often adjusts its "retail" price higher than the going rate, such that the effective discount when compared to other stations is only 3 cents. However, 3 cents is still better than nothing.
Some may also find it useful to know that making a purchase inside Meijer stores (found in the midwest) results in a 3 cent off per gallon coupon for the gas station located in front of the store. No minimum purchase required. I think a pack of gum would count. But it must be bought in the supermarket. Buying something at the Meijer convenience store located next to the pumps will not result in a gas coupon.
