***eBay’s 10th Anniversary - A Thank You from Meg Whitman***

September 02, 2005 | 04:36PM PST/PT

Meg Whitman
Meg Whitman
This weekend marks our official 10th anniversary. On Labor Day weekend in 1995, Pierre Omidyar wrote the code for AuctionWeb, which would soon become eBay.

What a tremendous decade it's been! It's hard to imagine what the world would be like had Pierre spent that weekend doing something else.

And it's equally hard to imagine what eBay would be like without the passion, commitment and ingenuity of eBay members around the world. You took an idea that many dismissed as naïve, and you ran with it. You trusted one another…you pushed eBay in exciting new directions…and you spread the word.

Today, eBay is more than an e-commerce destination, and more than an online community. Together, we've built something historic and important. We've truly made the world a better place, and that's something few can say.

Also, on behalf of everyone here at PayPal and eBay, I would like to extend our sympathy and prayers to those impacted by Hurricane Katrina. We urge you to be patient with trading partners residing in the affected areas. For more information on ways you can donate to relief efforts on eBay, please see our previous announcement.

Thank you for being a part of the eBay Community. And Happy 10th Anniversary!

Sincerely,
Meg

If they do anything - they will do it at the last minute. I'll be gone and won't be about to take advantage.
Oh Well - maybe on the 20th??

From TAGnotes this week:

TAG PREDICTIONS FOR UPCOMING EBAY PROMOTIONS
************************************************************
On 5 September 2005 ebaY will celebrate its 10 anniversary for its US site (and incidentally
it is the 6th anniversary of TAGnotes). TAG predicts ebaY will conduct several promotions
during the month of September with a free or 10 cent listing day. We think ebaY will do a
promotion of some sort or another, every week of September.

$250,000 seems like a paltry amount to me given Ebays net worth. More like a token gesture.

For all the money eBay and Pay Pal have made "off the backs" of it's US customers...$250,000 (of which they will deduct in taxes) is nothing...the minimum most corporations and celeb individuals are giving is at least $1 million...

And to issue a "thank you" email for 10 years of lining their pockets with nothing given back to the customers..is classic eBay customer service....take from the customer base, and treat us like crap.

Will they ever learn? Sooner or later their star will fall>>>it"s truly a shame how they treat the very customers who keep them in business>

I dont think 250k is all that paltry. It's still a quarter million dollars. And they have stepped-up so far for every disaster from tsunami to whatever! It is not every company or organization you see doing that.

Yeah, Ebay may 'make money off our backs' but it was their idea - good for them. You (we) would not be able to make money, internet related, probably if not for them, either.

I think if any of us think we're going to make money on E-Bay we better go find a real job instead. E-Bay has gotten to be more of a hobby for me, I just do it because I enjoy it. But I believe I am going to have to sign up to be a bell ringer for the Salvation Army just to buy my poor cat Christmas Dinner this year.

Nothing yet ... (thanks eBay) grrrrr

We *have* decided to start a new 2nd business along with our ebay selling of antiques, and in good hopeful time of a year to two years, the new business will take over as our main source of income, then the ebay/antiques can become just a hobby.

AintRichYET, but check with me next year. LOL ...

We might see something yet. The listing counts counter has stopped as of Monday, a big drop over the weekend. It seems like the counter stops counting when it drops too much.

Well today is my 7th year Anniversary with E-Bay. In the past I always got a congratulations E-Mail but this year I didn't get anything. The E-Bay thrill is a thing of the past. I don't think it will be around in another ten years.

1 item - 10% off - that's it? That's more for buyers - who pay nothing in fees - than for us Sellers who keep them in business!

But E-Bay Loves You, they will always send your E-Bay bill and if you don't pay it,they will throw you off. What more can a Seller ask for?

You cannot find the darn 'celebrate' page from anywhere except the link that we were given here. That's the funny part - they give this little piece of crap anniversary present - basically for buyers - then don't tell anyone about it!

Ha, Ha - very funny Meg.

The 10% off is only good on pre-selected overpriced crap. You can problably save more by searching for a good deal.

I was sent a colorful email about it, which included the link to read about it (the link i show above) ...

and no, Sthoemke, it is good on ANY one item during the 10 day "celebration", as long as you pay w/ paypal (... "an eBay company"

I stand corrected. eBay makes it look like you have to click a link and buy one of the "hot items".
