They updated an hour early today, at 4:00 PM. Wilma is very near the Yucatan Peninsula. The outer bands are hitting Cancun now and because it's moving so slow, they are expecting 10 - 20 inches of rain in some places. I believe there may be an interim update later, as they are expecting it to go back up to a category 5 before landfall. After it clobbers the Yucatan, it's supposed to curve to the right into the gulf and move rapidly toward Florida, making landfall sometime Sunday. The exact time of landfall changes with each update, but now they are guessing early afternoon on Sunday.

Niel...All you need to do is stock up on 40 cases of beer, 500 lbs of ice, 40 cartons of cigarettes and a pickup load of toilet paper. You'll be in a position to trade for anything you need in the aftermath of the hurricane.

coffee and a few tanks of propane should do it.

The local news here said that it will fall apart once it crosses land - I doubt that. I think it was a ditzy female reporter instead. It didn't look good to me from the first time it popped up out of nowhere and didn't move much.

from Cancun - I hope it keeps going west.
Good idea about the beer, ice , etc. but where would I store them? Also they look down on the black market. I have 8 bottles of 2-buck chuck so that should get me thru. My daughter is with me so she is a big help. We survived Andrew so hopefully we can get thru this.
will camp out in the hallway and put the bird in my closet. got to get between as many walls as you can. If the roof blows off, - poof

Niel...This is the first time I posted an image from the Mexican site. I apologize for the size of it and the scrolling it requires to read the posts on this page. It looks like it will update automatically, and I don't know how to resize the image and retain the auto-update feature. It will be obsolete by tomorrow afternoon and I will delete it at that time.

Good news and bad news. First the bad news. Wilma is moving onshore on the Yucatan penninsula as a category 4 hurricane and is expected to stay on shore for at least 24 hours. This will be devestating for Cancun. The good news is that the time over land will weaken it, and when it emerges into the gulf of mexico, it will encounter wind shear that will keep it from intensifying. It will then travel over somewhat cooler water that may weaken it more. Although it is still predicted to hit Florida as a category 3 hurricane, thwere is a long shot possibility it could weaken to a category 2 storm before it makes landfall. If that is the case, Niel will only have to stock up on 20 cases of beer and 20 cartons of cigarettes instead of 40 of each.

One of my dearest friend's daughter and brand new son-in-law are/were honeymooning in Playa del Carmen (near Cancun) ... they and the rest of the hotel guests were evacuated 6 miles inland. I can't imagine what all they're going through. (6-miles doesn't seem far enough inland to me.) ... I do know they have no power, and I am sure they're not having very much fun now. (The first few days were sun and fun.)

We went yard saling this morning, not much out there tho.
Sparky - I have a 6 pack of Presidente beer and 8 2buck chucks.
Cancun is really getting hit hard. Hope it weakens for us. Looked like it will hit around Ft Myers (Fort Misery)

Just for information, a tropical depression formed this afternoon south west of Puerto Rico. It quickly strengthened into a tropical storm. Since there are no names left for Atlantic cyclones this season, the storm was named Tropical Storm Alpha. It's not expected to threaten Florida. Ironically, some of the same forces of nature that will be steering Wilma toward Florida, will be pushing Alpha away from Florida.

Well Niel, what can I say except you're gonna get a lot of rain and wind late tonight and tomorrow? It's getting very close to the time you should consider opening a bottle of that two buck chuck. Here's a real time satellite image of Wilma that is more focused on Florida than the one above. It will update automatically, and should provide interesting viewing till you lose power. For those in New England, keep a close eye on the bottom right corner of the image. TD Alpha, which should regain TS strength shortly will be coming into view. It will be absorbed, or combined with Wilma when it comes off the east coast of Florida. There are several different nightmare scenarios that can develop if this happens.

The latest advisory shows Wilma to have max sustained winds of 110 mph, which is 1 mph shy of a Category 3 hurricane. It can very easily make landfall as a category 3 storm. The main thing is not to concentrate on the exact point of landfall, as hurricane force winds will extend 85 miles each side of the eye and tropical force winds will extend up to 230 miles each side of the eye. This storm has a very large windfield, and everyone in Florida will get a piece of Wilma in their front yard. At 9:pm the NHC will start issuing hourly updates concerning the position and probably point of impact.

Estate and Sparky - the 2-buck chuck is open.
Something to calm my nerves. Estate - glad your friends are OK. They really got it hard and for so long. Wilma is supposed to whiz thru.

Wilma is now a Category 3. The west coast of Fla is getting is bad.

glassgrl ... Niel lives in Miami. It is really bad up here in Winter Haven. The gusts are very strong and we're not getting the eye. I can't imagine what Naples is going through. So far, as you can see, we haven't lost power yet, but it's really bad here. The rain is pounding down. The pond in the back of the complex is filling fast. It's cold for us up here because the way the hurricane is spinning, it's bringing the cold air from the north. Once it passes, we're in for some "cold" (well, it's cold for us!) weather -- high 60's during the day and low 50's at night. So in other words, we're going from high 80's to high 60's. Brrrrrr ...

I'm very worried about Niel. The eye is passing right over Miami/Ft. Lauderdale. The aspect that has me the most worried about right now is tornados. We have the cold air from the north mixing with the warm moist air from the hurricane. I think I need a drink!
