I found this lid at a recent sale. At first I thought it was a serving plate but realized it was a handled lid to a container. That was confirmed when I ask the seller about the piece. She stated she broke the bottom half. (solved that) I don't know if I want to sell the lid or find a new bottom for the lid and keep it. It is clearly dark black glass. When held up to artifical light or daylight or see no hints of purple.
Can anyone help on this piece. It has a 6 1/2" diameter but the underside lip is 6 inches.
(and I hope my links work better than when I tried last time!)

can't help with the black glass per se, but advertising the listing as the lid only, it just might sell well. i used to have an eBay friend who would look for lids to antique items at yard sales, flea markets, etc. and he did quite well selling just the replacement lids (usually what gets broken first) on eBay.

Thanks VintagePC. I still hope to identify the piece. Maybe its amethyst but I just don't see any purple. I tried Fenton and Westmoreland but no luck. Hope another member can help.

It looks like amethyst. I have one similar, and have sold a couple others like that. They serve quite well as either a replacement lid or a candy dish. Mine is quite thick, and to see the purple in it, I have to hold it up to the bright sun. An artificial light or even natural ambient light won't do it. You need to physically put it between your eye and the bright sun. If you can detect any purple, be sure to put the words amethyst and "black glass" in the title. Even though black glass would not be proper, it's a term many use when searching for amethyst.

Thanks everyone for your responses; I appreciate. All are nice suggestions or recommendations. I still hope to find out what it fit on. With a 6 1/2" diameter, it had to have been a biscuit jar or the like.
