Better make sure you change your selling preferences to opt OUT of this change. If you don't change, you're in.... I have to say this is about the most BIZARRE thing I have seen ebay do yet!

***Other Sellers’ Items Displayed on Closed Item Pages***

October 13, 2005 | 03:26PM PST/PT

To increase the exposure of current listings and improve the finding experience for buyers, we will soon display similar active listings from other sellers on closed item pages. As they do today, buyers will first see other items from the seller who listed the original closed item in the “See More Great Items From This Seller” section. In addition, buyers will be shown a list of similar items from other sellers. This should be especially helpful for buyers who get to one of these closed item pages via a search engine.

Once launched, sellers who have not already opted out of having other sellers’ items displayed on Watch Reminder and Non-Winning Bidder emails will be defaulted into this program. This will ensure your items receive maximum exposure on other sellers’ closed item pages and that buyers who land on closed listings see relevant active listings.

Sellers will also have the ability to opt out of this program entirely, which means your closed item pages will not display similar items from other sellers, nor will your active listings appear on other sellers’ closed items. Sellers can also choose to only allow the display of other sellers’ items to any of the following types of buyers:

* Buyers who bid on, but didn’t win, the item.
* Buyers who did not actually bid on the item.
* Both of the above.

You will be able to control these settings from the “Promoting Similar Items on eBay Pages and Emails” section of your Preferences in My eBay.

Good Lord! It almost sounds like a spoof, so weird. What could have possessed the Ebay idiots?

OMG, what is wrong with these people?

I can't imagine any seller willing to promote the same merchandise for another seller. I guess Ebay doesn't care who they get the FVF from as long as they get SOMEONE'S final value fee.

Roadsmith...It's almost Halloween. Expect more surprises from Ebay in the days to come.

what's wrong with cross promotions in general? if i don't have what a buyer wants, i'd just as soon they had some sort of positive eBay experience and bought from another seller. it's not like we don't need buyers and traffic on ebay.

one feature i like about cross promotions the way they're currently set up, allowing i think it's 10 custom cross promotions, is that i've been able to handpick dealers i know or whose reputation i trust - cross promoting successfully now with four other dealers, has been nothing but a positive experience for all of us. actually, invited you to cross promote with me but didn't hear back and the invitation expired. i do like that aspect of being able to pick and choose who to cross promote with. if i don't have xyz postcard that someone's looking for, they're going to look for it anyway. but with the custom cross promoting, at least you can hopefully steer them to someone you think is reputable.

This is different than CHOSEN cross promotions - this is randomly selected by ebay by item matches - the sellers could be total shysters and there they would be on the page YOU paid for - directing traffic AWAY from your listings...

i suppose i sort of see your point. i do like the CHOSEN cross promotions. but regarding the default eBay's proposing - we never have any control over the buyer's next experience anyway.

all we can try to do is steer them to sellers with our CHOSEN cross promotions - but other than that, they're on their own anyway. i seriously doubt that anyone would ever come back on me griping because they saw someone else's postcard listed at the bottom of the page, went and bought it and had a bad experience. they chose to follow the link, no one's holding a gun to their head. i don't think they'd even remember where they saw the sign post at the end of one of my auctions anyway. just my $0.02 worth.

it's a two-way street. wouldn't you like to think that some of your items would be promoted at the end of other peoples' auctions?

Absurd. ... I gotta go find that "opt out" box.

As far as I can see, if you use this option, then there is no point in sending "second chance" offers, buyers will be able to see other sellers with the same item they lost, and if you have another item, you will lose the chance to sell it.

I opted out of the watchlist, but left it on the EOA notice.

I sell "one-of" items, so the chances are I won't have another to sell. However, if I have one for sale, it will show up on someone else's end-of-auction notice, directing a potential customer to MY auctions or MY store.

Yes, it does work both ways and I too sell "one of" items (as in each postcard is different from another) but I don't see any sense in this. I think buyers will think that they are looking at more of your items no matter what verbage ebay puts there(we all know that they don't read very well and they are used to seeing more of YOUR items there).

In general it just doesn't make good business sense to send folks in a buying mood AWAY from your site! Good lord I have thousands of postcards that those folks don't even KNOW they wanted yet and I don't want them to go on a wild goose chase away from me until they have decided once and for all I don't have what they want.

Looks like all auctions that closed before you opted out will have other people's auctions on them. Sign out as your self and go look at your closed auctions. I'm on live chat right now about this:
*************************************
[email protected]: Do we have a choice? I opted out in Preferences but it is still showing. Why?
[email protected]: Or does it show on all auctions that closed PRIOR to opting out and we don't have an option on auctions that closed PRIOR to opting out?
Aaron B.: The preferences must have been turned on when you listed the items. I assure you that the cross promotional item will not be there on newly created listing.
Aaron B.: That is corr3ect.
[email protected]: So there is NO WAY to turn it off of auctions that closed PRIOR to opting out???
*******************************
Glad that I'm available to advertise for my competitiors
