As of this posting, Wilma is a very strong category 3 hurricane moving north east up the Atlantic coast. It's still a little to close to the coast to feel comfortable. Here is a color enhanced satellite image of its present position. People in N.C. and VA need to keep an eye on this, and if it doesn't start pulling east soon, there could be some big problems in rain soaked New England.

My thoughts are with the people in southern Florida. We are well away from its path in Maryland (I hope) but our domain and email server is in Boca Raton and we have been up and down for awhile. Wonder how many sales we lost from our online store?

Yeah, I'm supposed to fly in to Ft.Lauderdale airport to visit a business friend in Coral Springs, a week from this Saturday ... I sure hope they all have electricity etc. restored by then ... some reports say it will take longer than that to restore elec. and water to a lot of southern Florida.
edited to add, I see Neil is not back online with us yet.

Okay, I heard from my Coral Springs/ Ft. Lauderdale friend late this afternoon ... she had driven "5 cities north" to a mom of a friend's house" to use the phone to make business calls ... she called to tell me that the elec. (and water in many areas) is out for the bottom 1/3 of the whole state, from her eastern area, across to the west, and down thru the Keys; not expecting to get back up for 3 to 6 weeks overall, maybe more, because so many power companies are still in Louisiana ... she has no power or water and said the worst thing is that none of them can even flush their toilets. ..... she said everyone (so far) is cooking out on their grill last nite and today ...
So, I have to cancel/postpone my airline ticket to Ft.L. and say some more prayers for the millions of people affected by Wilma ... (took me an hour and 20 minutes on the phone inre the flight, only to find out i have to go to a ticket counter at an airport in Ohio to actually do "anything" with my airline ticket.) ... arghhh.

I have a customer in St. Augustine i'm waiting to hear from. Payment for his item arrived Monday, the day Wilma hit. We had prearranged it so I would hold up on shipping till I heard from him that it was safe to do so. I just emailed him about an hour ago, and am waiting to hear back.
Neglus....Knowing Niel, she's probably auctioning off 2 buck chuck to some of the locals who didn't think to stock up. Just think, high reserves that you know will be met, no shipping or packing, and no Ebay fees

oh poor niel - I was hoping the power would be back on by now. Weren't they without power for about 7 days last time?
NOW I know how you all felt when Opal came through and I was without power and computer for 3 days and I was incommunicado. Then I learned to buy a generator and have it - even if you don't have to use it. Or have a laptop and converter that will hook up to your car lighter at the very least!
Let's all send blessings to niel and swift power hookup!

Fortunately for Niel, the weather is cool. No sweltering days and nights while the power is out. I just hope she stocked up on enough water, ice and food. FP&L is working hard at restoring power to those in the affected areas, but it can take a bit. I'm sure her house is very hurricane proof after Andrew. It still is such an inconvenience not to have power.

well that explains that! just got an email from my DH boss and he says there are still 6 airports towers still in S FL without water, electricity or phone service. If the airport towers are without then that's serious. They are usually some of the first ones to come back.

According to the news, 1 out of 3 people in Florida were without power after Wilma hit. About 98% of the people in Miami lost power, so I suspect Niel is waiting for power to be restored. May be a few days before we hear from her. I heard from my customer in St. Augustine today, and everythings fine there so I shipped his item. Hope everything gets back to normal in the rest of the state soon. There is presently a low pressure system in the Carribean off Central America that is trying to develop into a headline grabber. I'm following it closely. Something could develop in the next 36 hours.

The low pressure system I mentioned in the previous post is now a tropical depression, and is expected to become a tropical storm tomorrow and eventually a hurricane. The good news (for us) is that it's being blocked by a high pressure ridge that is expected to guide it ashore in Central America. Let's hope that HP system holds up and doesn't let it get loose in the gulf.

The bad news for me is that I am going on a cruise in a week - the Mexican ports have been cancelled (Cancun and Cozumel) and for now the ones in Belize and Roaton are still on. We may spend the whole week at sea!

Neglus...Here is a copy and paste from the first advisory issued for this storm by the NHC:
<<THE DEPRESSION IS MOVING TOWARD THE NORTHWEST NEAR 3 MPH...6 KM/HR.
A SLOW MOTION TOWARD THE NORTHWEST IS EXPECTED DURING THE NEXT 24
HOURS.
MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 35 MPH... 55 KM/HR...WITH HIGHER
GUSTS. THE DEPRESSION HAS THE CHANCE TO BECOME A TROPICAL STORM
BEFORE MOVING INLAND OVER NICARAGUA IN A COUPLE OF DAYS.
ESTIMATED MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE IS 1006 MB...29.71 INCHES.
THE DEPRESSION IS EXPECTED TO PRODUCE RAINFALL TOTALS OF 10 TO 15
INCHES ACROSS WESTERN PANAMA...COSTA RICA AND NICARAGUA WITH
ISOLATED MAXIMUM AMOUNTS OF 20 INCHES.>>
One computer model is very aggressive in puting this as a 94 kt hurricane before it comes ashore. Also, there's another tropical wave out there that is being watched closely . The Atlantic hurricane season still has one month left to go. Hopefully, these will all go ashore somewhere besides the U.S. or fizzle, but this one is for real. It is in almost the same identical circumstances as Wilma was when she formed.
