Bear1949 - I do know what I was looking at. I was a unit armorer in the Army and have fired one of these on the range in Panama years ago. The reason I wanted clarification from the BATF in the first place is that the breech ring and breech can both be easily fabricated and then installed on this cannon making it a fully functional cannon. Blue prints for making the breech ring and breach assembly are readily available online. Every cannon I have ever seen for sale (as a lawn ornament) had the breech "mounting" end of the tube tourched thereby making it 100% non repairable even if you did make or buy a breech ring and breech. There was no tourch work done on this one so I just wanted clarification from the people that enforce the laws covering it.

cblev65252 - The answer would be yes. If you made a breech ring and breech for this it could be made fully functional. Any competent machinest could spit these out in less than a day with the proper equipment and proper grade steel stock.

WashingtoneBayer - "Bear thanks for the info. I wish people would become more educated before going off on a knee jerk reaction." I don't consider my inquiring to the proper regulatory agency with a question about clarification of the law a "knee jerk reaction". If I had wanted to mess with his auction and get it ended I would have contacted ebay which I did NOT do. The only reason I even called them in the first place was because I may be interested in bidding on it and wanted to make sure it was legal before I got myself in a deep hole. The last thing I want is the BATF gestapo knocking on my door at 3AM in the morning wanting to know where I got it if I would bid and win.

Cheryl you're the only one here brining in the RT so stop it.

This is about an auction that may of been interfered with.

I am curious Mike are you a staunch supporter of gun control also?

This just seems wrong to me when the seller should of been contacted and asked.

Where is there auction interference? No where. Mike had every right to check on the legality of the auction. He didn't contact the bidders. He didn't contact eBay. If it's found to be legal, fine. If not, another illegal item is taken off the streets. Is there a problem with that?

To a point yes. I have no problem with regulating the purchase of a weapon. But there is a differance between gun control and anti gun ownership. When they start putting them on "banned list" and talk about outright making gun ownership illegal license or not that's the point where my limit stops. I have no problem with background checks and even licencing. I buy about 3-4 long guns a year and 5 or 6 pistols. I have never complained about waiting a couple of day's to pick up my pistols until the background check goes through. I also have a PA concealed weapons permit. I have 3 gun safes full of guns from 1700's vintage black powder rifles to current production semi automatic pistols and large caliber "wild cat" rifles. I currently have a OBM No. 1140-0014 Application for Tax Paid Transfer and Registration of Firearm filed and am waiting to get approval and my tax stamp so I can buy a German MP 40 submachine gun I have had my eye on for quite some time.

I have had the BATF at my house 1 time a few years ago for a spot inspection. They inspected registration paperwork, we talked for a while and shook hands before they left. The inspection was brought on by the complaint of a neighbor about 1/4 mile down the road from my property. I had recently bought a 50BMG bolt action rifle and I guess the rather loud reports scared (well you know what) out of them.

So depending on how you word your question I would have two different answers.

Am I for gun control? Yes, by all means. Criminals are the last people I want to have easy access to a gun.

Am I for anti ownership gun laws? No, period!

Then YOU of all people should have known by LOOKING at the photos that the cannon had been demilled.

What difference does it make if the breech & breech ring have been flame cut or removed to demil the cannon. The flame cut parts can also be removed & replaced.

Even IF those components were replaced making the cannon operable, 57mm rounds (ammo) is not available to the public. Were you able to locate expended brass to make your own ammo, suitable primers, gunpowder and projectiles aren't available for reloading.

The best you could possibly do would be is to make it into a blackpowder cannon.

Lastly there are hundrend of cannons similar to this one located all ocer the country in front of VFW hall and/or memorial parks.

I've never heard of one of THEN being returned to operating condition by anyone other that the US Military.

Have you?

Personally I think you made more to do over this than was needed, especially if you have the military experience with weapons of this type that you say you have.

Mike, you could move to a country where you don't need a licence to own a Schmeisser. Where the BATF Gestapo can't break down your door at 4am... like Iraq. Anyone can carry a semi or full auto without licence, but limited to one per household. You can also get a good deal one some cheap 7.62mm ammo too [ edited by agitprop on Feb 19, 2006 01:09 PM ]
