Roadsmith...Floppy disk formatting is a strenous activity for a floppy drive. I would be very reluctant to use the drive on the Mavica to format disks unless it's an extreme emergency. The floppy drive on the Mavica is a mechanical unit and the most probable part of the camera to fail. No need to tempt fate, and I have no idea what Sony would charge to repair one or how much longer they will provide support for them. I would stick to formatting disks on the PC.

YIKES. If ANYONE here finds a Mavica 73 (new) at a Sears Outlet store, please get one for me and I'll pay you for it plus shipping. We have no outlet store within a hundred miles and I'd love to have a backup camera on hand.

Thanks for the info on reformatting in the camera itself, Sparkz. I won't try it.

I've found a battery for this camera through BizNet for about $33. I think that's the best price I've ever seen.

nana inquired: Just curious - how come so many mention the mavica for ebay. Why does that seem to be the camera of choice for ebay listings? What's different about it?

Basically it popular with legacy PC owners that still have a working 3.5-inch floppy disk but possibly don't have USB ports to accomodate other digitals. Modern compact digital cameras mostly use USB to download files to PCs, though a few are starting to adopt WiFi instead. Floppy disk-based Mavicas tend to be larger and bulkier than most current generation digitals.

I use a Canon IXUS simply because it's the same size as my dependable Rollei 35SE and fits in any pocket or purse, etc.

Why reformat? Just set your computer to show hidden files. Then all the hidden files will show on your floppy. Then simply delete them. You will have an empty disc ready to use.

I had to stop and see for myself if I was given the correct info. The Sears repair and outlet store has several different models. I bought a MVC-FD100 ( Bottom of the line) 1.2Mp for $98.00 + tax. The box says they are refurbished, but the clerk told me they are new, and since they are discontinued, were repackaged. They come with all the original components and paperwork. I'm charging the battery right now. Oh yea, the charger also doubles as a power source, so I can take photos while it's charging.

I've had the Mavica 88 since 1999. It's great!

On another note, could someone tell me how I go about posting an image to these message threads on Vendio? Greg

I have used a Sony DSC-F717 for about 3 yrs now. i used to own a mavica 91. (cant remember the exact number) It was a good camera. But when i got my new camera the f717. I realised how much better it was then the mavica. It is a great camera for taking closeups and sunsets. And anything in between. i have probably taken 14,000. plus photos with it. Worn out a couple of batteries. I do love the fact that the lense actually pivots . Which means that you dont have to get right over the object to take the photo. It is a 5 mega pixels. And can take a 1 minute movie.

Does not use a floppy disc. Does use a memory stick. Which you can just take out of the camera and plug into a card reader. I am going to buy at least another one of these cameras for a spare.I suspect i will use 1 just for doing my closeup work on my opals and slices of opal. And the other one for taking normal shots, like sunsets.

I DO HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS CAMERA. Y ou can still buy them new and second hand on ebay.

Just got around to reading the owners manual on the FD100. It has a feature that my other Mavica is missing. There is a USB output built in. That means that in the event you buy a new computer that doesn't have a floppy drive, you can download thru the supplied USB cord. Also has a Video out plug and cord supplied to connect to your tv.
I'm loving my Mavicas even more!!

Love my Mavica.....On my second one. Had this about 3 years. SMALL PROBLEM NOW - Is there an at-home solution? The ZOOM
button is stuck. It won't move at all and I'm afraid to use a LOT of force, for fear of doing more harm. Camera is functioning great otherwise, but I like to zoom and miss it!

Shopchicly: That happened to me about two months ago--scared the bejeezus out of me. The zoom would move a little but not all the way to one end or the other. I left it alone to "heal" for a little while, came back, and the zoom worked fine. I have NO IDEA what happened there. I've had the camera for 8 years now and LOVE it.

I too have used them for the almost 9 years I have been selling on Da Bay! They are by far the easiest to use, hands down! And you know what, after 1000's of pictures listed over the years, not ONE single person has ever complained about the the quality of my pics. But they sure do find a way to complain about darn near everything else but NEVER about the quality of my pics. I have even sold over 30 vehicles using this camera too! I am a firm believer that you dont need a fancy 5Megapixel camera to make sales!
I have had the same camera since I started. I think I paid close to $300 for it at the time but it was the best thing on the market at the time. It has been sent away one time for repairs and I about went crazy for those 2 weeks I was without it so I bought another one on eBay and paid to have it overnighted too! lol silly me!!

That happened to me as well. What happened is something sticky got there. All it took was two drops of water to fix it. In other words, just enough water to loosen the sticky crap, but so much water that it hurts the camera. Works great ever since.

Why not just use a modern camera and a card reader? You don't need to wait for downloading anything and it is a lot faster than waiting for a floppy to load.

Some of the Mavica cameras do use memory stick I believe model 85 and up with adaptor ( floppy that holds memory stick) & other models that have the memory stick slot but still do the great closeups. I think the higher model numbers above 91 have higher Megpix resolution also . I like the size of the image my Mavica takes don't have to reduce image size like I have to do with my Kodak camera. It also depends on what I am taking pictures of as to what camera I use. Some of the Mavica cameras also have cords to connect them to your TV for displaying and or PC.

I would like to have one of the models that you can plug in your electric source direct on those occassions that the battery goes down. But I have 2 batteries I always make sure they are charged so I don't have to wait when I am busy & in the mood to get a lot of images ready for auction. I sometimes even have to use both cameras LOL I am always taking more pics than I need.

Road did anyone ever find you a deal? I don't live near a Sears outlet or store --or I would find you one. Ebay has a lot of the Mavicas and at good prices especially since I paid a fortune for mine way back yonder.

I also don't recommend you use the camera's format option either but it comes in handy when away from your PC. It also has a disc copy option that you choose that and then put in another blank floppy and it will copy one floppy to another it is also putting strain on your camera floppy function but if away from a PC and you want to give copy of pictures to friend it comes in handy I have only used it once but works great. I always preferr using the PC for floppy format and copy etc.

Shopchicly--I don't recommend getting any camera wet with water but maybe a little alcohol instead it dries faster but if you try that make sure to turn camera button side down where gravity will take the liquid away from the internal works.............. Either apply with a fine mist sprayer while in that position to get into crevices and careful aim let sit in that position too until it is very dry. Don't get it on screen... OR be sure to turn it over soon after applying.........

You can carry 20 of these cards in your handbag and no one would ever know.

HWAhwa I recently got a flash type thumb drive that holds my SD card or I think memory stick it is so tiny and all you do is slip the card into it and bam you plug into PC. Mine came with an extendor USB cable but I don't need it as I have 4 front USB2 slots on my PC thanks to an internal USB card I installed that had front bay insert with it. Those flash or thumb drive card readers are NICE!

It was always a pain to make sure I had either the docking station or the appropriate cable with me if away from home as I always use my Kodak when on trips or out and about. With the thumb drive no more cable messing and running batteries down.

Sears had models that were closed out recently. FD100,FD200 and one that takes a mini CD. Your 73 is a distant memory. Check out the FD100, it has more features than the older model 73, and operates about the same.
I'd be willing to check to see if they have any left if you decide you want one. Mine came to $104.41 with the tax.

Road, I was talking about the FD 100 that the other person got here on board it is much like the 73 all of them are but it will have a 1.3 I think meg resolution and a few more features. don't know if it is a 10X optical zoom like my FD73 but I would love to have a little newer version as they have memory stick capability and kept the simple at least to me operation. I think it was Max that got the sale on Fd100 and I read the stuff about it on ebay just out of curiosity when he posted he got one, it sounds very nice.

I myself like the body size for handling better than the new smaller cameras but that is just me. The FD 73 like mine is available on ebay and probably elsewhere too but not made anymore, but the later version of the mavica is even better. In fact I think the Sony camera's are great cameras and their optics are super quality. Now if I could afford one of those SLR digital cameras ( Nikon or Canon?)I would be tickled pink I do believe.

Okay, I just got the fact that we were told Sears OUtlets are closing out Mavicas (I automatically read into that that it was the 73!). Boo hoo.

I'm a little leery of buying one on eBay now; we had a bad experience getting a new roller thingy for my printer. Supposed to be new but came reconditioned with no instructions. We kept it for a while and then installed it. It was a flop and we just chalked it up to experience. Got a new one instead.

How can I be sure a "new" Mavica 73 is really new??

There are NO new Mavica fd 73 cameras. Just recently my bro-in-law got one just like mine and looked brand spanking new and works great only needed a new battery. So yes you can get a lemon at ebay or even at stores for new cameras but try to buy from a very reputable salesman ebayer. AND get one where they have return policy and replies to your emails that you should write him first even just to check em out........ Sometimes you can tell what kind of seller they are by responses you get or at least that is how I feel. If seller does not respond I mark them off my buy list for sure and any that just strike me as curt, non-knowledgeable or you get the gist I think. Oh my bro-in-law seems to like to call his potential seller before bidding on things like that camera he got. In fact both my brother-in-laws will call the sellers before buying or bidding on higher dollar items. They have never found an unwelcoming--(word?) seller by their calls yet. BUT I don't recommend calling just every seller or anything like that you might just piss some one off. Most of them if they want calls have their phone number on me page or store if they have one if they take calls at all.

Why buy another Sony Mavica ?
If someday you need a new PC,it wont come with the floppy disk drive, why go backward??
Save the $$,when you get a new PC,you can use that $ to buy a modern camera.
Who knows,by then the modern camera could be on sale for $98 dollars!!

The FD100 and 200 come with a usb cord to download to computer, if that's the way you choose to download. The also have a slot for the memory stick in addition to floppy drive slot.
roadsmith:
The Mavica's at Sears have a 30 day (or 90 day} labor and 1 year parts warranty.
The one I got showed no signs that it had ever been fired up.

As far as floppy drives they are cheap for an external one via usb.. If I was going to get another Mavica I would go for a more recent model that have memory stick. But since I have 3 no 4 digital cameras, 3 35mm slr cameras and a Sony video camera I don't think I will be in market real soon for another camera. BUT if I do get another one I will definately test, test, test how they work, images quality and most importantly the zoom and optical zoom on them and the closeup capability is most important.. I would love to see how the very expensive SLR digital camera does. There are several models and I am sure the prices will come down eventually, I think problem with those is so many lens' to get etc like my 35 mm film cameral I have a humg bag loaded with all sorts of lens, filters all the good stuff and that is where a lot of expense comes in. I have a fortune invested in that film camera and now days it is worth hardly anything due to digital technology and I have over 5 thousand dollars invested. Course I would not give it up for anything but sure would like to test a digital one.

OH I got to rambling the deal with this thread is how we mavica owners love the camera for its ease and closeup taking images for ebay, new models or newer models use memory stick too so no biggy with pcs that don't have a floppy-plus you can have floppy installed or put in any pc you get now days, well mostly all of them and or external usb ones are available.
