Please see this site also, Tom: http://www.doglogic.com/vaccineinfo.htm You aren't alone in this problem with Ralphie. That vet isn't keeping up with his reading or he would know that "all 27 veterinary schools in North America are in the process of changing their protocols for vaccinating dogs and cats". Our vet insisted on vaccinating Janie even though she had just been diagnosed with cancer. We had read that dogs were being overvaccinated and we STILL let him give her the shots. In her case, she had no ill effects from the shots. Don't blame yourself, you SHOULD be able to trust your vet.

Some vets are downright idiots. A dog, cat or any animal should never be vaccinated with anything when they are sick or even if you suspect they might sick because they are acting differently.

Always say NO & if they don't accept no for an answer then go somewhere else. You wouldn't want them to take care of your pet anyway.

I have to agree. Why wouldn't you give anything to include people a vaccination just because they are sick? I can remember getting 6 vaccination shots when I was down with the Flu for a overseas deployment when I was in the Army eon's ago. My having the Flu had nothing to do with getting shots for other thing's.

Mike
Go back and read my post - I can't say 100% that that's why my Charlie died but I believe it was. Take my word for it - you don't want to take that chance if you love your pet!!!

Hmm, dog with established seizure disorder dies. Unless you had the dog necropsied, you can't blame it on the vaccines.

Oh but I can and I do. I also blame myself for even taking him with the other dogs. I have to live with that!!
I don't wish the pain I've felt on anyone else - please just wait if you know or feel your dog isn't well. After all what can it hurt to wait awhile?

I have to agree most DR.s and vest will NOT give vaccinations if you are sick period. My mother-in-law is nurse and testifies to that. If you got shots to go overseas in the service that is different they thing differently for sure they just stick and go to heck with outcome. My son went through getting shots while sick and got worse and wound up in the infirmary. My wife also worked for Dr.s for almost 10 years and they would not inject anyone if running fever for any type vaccine other shots are different.

I think Jane's right on this one. I remember having to sign off that my dog & kid were in good health before either could get vaccinated.

Irked is correct. I thought it was common knowledge that a vaccine is not to be administered to anyone who is sick or running a fever, animal or person. The body is cranked up to overdrive producing antibodies, and most vaccines will not take, and be rendered useless. In fact, they can be seen by the body as an additional invasion by an infection. Only an army doctor would try it because they can't be sued for malpractice.

UPDATE - Nina seems to be doing much better. Has been eating her food and even trying to steal some from the other dog. She is on meds until Friday and will take her in for blood tests. Thanks again for all your advice.

Good Lord KarenMx wake up & start learning. We are here to help each other & you don't need a degree for that.

Read this:

Don't vaccinate a sick dog. Only healthy dogs should be vaccinated -- if your dog is sick or stressed its immune system is busy dealing with the sickness or stress. Piling a vaccine on that decreases the effectiveness of the dog's immune system at fighting the illness, inhibits the development of an effective immune response to the vaccine, and increases the probability of an allergic reaction.

Tom, I am glad to hear Ralphie had a normal poop. Does that mean he is acting more like his old self? I learned on one of my dog groups that canned pumpkin (not the pie kind with spices, just plain pumpkin) is a miracle worker when it comes to constipation or diarrhea in dogs. For some reason it brings moisture to the bowel and gets everything back to normal. Sorry if that is too much information!

Ok, FATBOY has returned from his visit with his new DR -- a nice lady...

She thought at first he might have CUSHING'S DISEASE -- but his BLOOD WORK, etc was 100% NEGATIVE!

Which, I guess, is GOOD NEWS -- the final decision is to put him on a VERY STRICT diet -- no more CATS; no more POSSUM!

Every morning, he & I are gonna RUN 10 miles in the FL HEAT...

Tom...I agree with the Doc on the strict diet. In the future, you need to be much more selective on which neighbor's trash can he knocks over and rummages through.
