Well, after over a month of steriods, antiobotics, etc., she is no better. My vet here wants me to take her to a specialist in Jax for more tests, bone marrow, radiograph and on and on. Cost 1,500. and then if it is cancer, then either surgery or chemo, or whatever. I will meet with him next week in Jax to find out just what they will do. They really don't know what is wrong with her. This could reach thousands of dollars and if she won't make it anyway, why put her through all of it, not to mention my dollars. Have already spent over 500. Just wanted to keep you all updated.

Sorry to hear that niel - we were all hoping the outcome would be better.
Who did they send you to? There is Animal Hospital in Orange Park that is suppose to be nationally known - I wonder why they didn't pick that one? Not that it would be cheaper. I can try to find the business card I have for them if you want?

Here's a list of the animal hospitols in Orange Park, FL. I would think there one of the ones listed there.

Niel - I didn't see it on the list Mike posted but it sounds like the one they refer you too. Maybe they moved to Jax. You can call them and find out if they are affiliated with the one in Gainesville Fl. They are good but very expense. I'll check in AM for the card I have but I'm 90% sure that them.
I'm glad Mike posted the list because it reminded me that I've been to the Clay CO Humane Society
2230 Filmore Street, Orange Park, FL 32065
(904) 276-7729 and they were very good and not too expensive. Maybe you could get a second opinion there?

Niel, I am confused. What are her symptoms now, exactly? Are there high white cell count? Not eatting? temp? seizures? Hair falling out?
I really want to help but I don't know what has been done so far or what the current stats are. I can imagine what you're going through. How frustrating and how heartbreaking it is. Maybe some of you remember when I had that horrible experience with my dog about 2 years ago. I went through a year of hell. I have learned alot through this and found alot of resources which started with one kindly Vendioan who pointed me in the right direction.

I am so sorry there is no improvemenr. I would probably take my dog for a second opinion before going the expensive route of specialists.

niel how about a teaching hospital.
Example: University of Penn has a vet hospital, is there university near you that has one.
I know there are students there, but under the guidence of top notch doctors & it's your best chance to find out what is really going on.
If there is, just don't go through the emergency room, make an appointment.
Cheaper.
paloma I often think about Molly & how hard you fought to keep her as long as you did.

niel35 - I can hear the decision being made in your last post and I know how painful that decision can be. I rescue dogs and have been faced with the dilema you're facing many, many times.
What you have to ask yourself is what's best for your dog. Is she suffering? and what kind of life will she have after all the medical intervention if she survives.
Believe me I do understand the pain you are going through but we as humans have the ability to put an end to our pets suffering and pain if we feel the hope is gone.
All pet lovers want to hang on to their babies as long as possible but sometimes we hang on too long and the animal suffers because we can't let go. I've been guilty of that myself on numerous occasions and will most likely do it again in the future because I can't bear to let go.
I'm not advocating you put the dog down - that's a decision only you and your family and vet can make. Just take a good long look at your dog - she will tell you whether it's time to let go.
Good luck to you and your family and regardless of your decision the amount of people responding to your post and the advice and sympathy you have received here should tell you that you are not alone in your pain.

Niel - I can't find the card but I think it's the place they are sending you and by the way, it is a teaching hospital. That doesn't make them inexpensive by any means.
If that what you decide to do, you maybe able to set up payments or something.

I have an appt. in Orange Park at 9AM. Her platelets are very low 40,000 and the white count is way up. Thanks for all your advice. I don't have time to look for a teaching hospital at this point and will have to put my trust in them. Will let you know how it goes.

ladyjewels: you are right about the expense, been there & I know.
I guess the way I worded it sounded like it was cheaper all around. It isn't, but there is a hefty extra charge when you go through emergency.
My cat needed help & fast. The vet I had him to told me he wouldn't make it until the next day. I went straight to Penn & that was in 2003. Peepers is still with me today thanks to U of P
niel's chances are better with a teaching hospital finding out what is really going on.

I was going to call and see if they are the same teaching hospital (or affiliated with) that I took my dog to in Gainesville, Fl. It was a long time ago but I think it is the same one.

Just wanted to keep you up to date. I had all the tests done, bloodwork, bone marrow, etc last Friday. She was in Jax all day and we picked her up around 6:30PM, still groggy.
The vet just called me and she has a cancerous tumor in her spleen. They want to do a splenectomy but no guarantees. $2,500 and if they need to do a transfusion, more and then who knows after that. I have decided to just make her comfortable, spoil her a lot and when she shows distress, will take her in to the vet. This is the hardest decision but I don't see where she will fully recover. She was a rescue dog and she has had a good life with me and her buddies here, 2 other dogs.
Thanks for all your help and advice when I needed it.

niel, My heart goes out to you. So difficult to play god but we have to for our pets' sake. Someone told me that you will just know when enough is enough and when it's time to end the suffering. I went through the same thing with my dog. Very difficult. I think you made the right decision.

Very hard decision to make but I am sure it is the right one. Spoil her silly, make her comfortable and she will let you know when it's the right time. My thoughts are with you. (I am facing a similar decision with the our Doodle. We hoped he could make it through the summer because he lowes to go out on the boat but I am not so sure we will make it )

Our hearts go out to you and your family - this is the right decision albeit the brutal one to make for her. Some people I know say they couldnt make that decision because it hurts them too much - then there are true animal lovers like yourself who realize that its about the animal and relieving their suffering - not about your obvious pain.
Dogs live in the here and now - not the past - not the future, so she doesnt remember her past of being abandoned. All she knows is that she is loved and cared for by you.
When its time try to remember thats all she knows and also try to remember that you are not alone. there are those of us on this board that are taking this walk with you and understand your pain and heartache.
