fluffy -- the majority of my items start at $4.95 (books) and get one bid. If I started them at .99 that's what they would sell for. I still make decent money with about 50% sell through. It helps that relists get a listing fee refund if they sell.

At this point I mainly use ebay for books that I can't sell on Amazon. It amazes me how many people will pay $5-10 on ebay for something they can get on any major book site for $2.

I think the unhealthy dynamic that this jerk is talking about is the tons of money that they sunk into a failed eBay express.

Huh?

eBay Express is simply a subset of the eBay.com site. Costs involved with developing eBay Express are salaries for a few programmers and a slice (a very small slice) of the quarterly marketing expenditure.

I realize most of you don't bother reading the financials, but you might be interested in learning that eBay spent a combined $500 million in the third quarter on sales and marketing, and product development. In spite of that, eBay still managed to book a profit of $281 million in Q3.

You have to spend money to make money. Not every effort will be successful. It's a bit like throwing a handful of cooked spaghetti at the wall: only a few pieces will stick.

But back to those financials. Folks looking for even more reasons to be ticked off at eBay will be pleased to note that Meg & Co. booked income of $28 million in Q3 for "sale of corporate aircraft".

50% sellthrough in books is unheard-of.

Care to share your seller ID, so we all can see what you're doing?

What amazes me is why on earth are you listing on Amazon for $2 when you can get $5-$10 on ebay for the same thing. Even with eBay never ending fee increases, it would make sense in your case to drop Amazon and go to eBay.

I sell mostly DVDs on Amazon and a few videos. I only post the ones that bring good money on Amazon, the rest goes on E-Bay. I find most of the titles have so many listed that you would never sell on Amazon. But if your buying in large lots it doesn't hurt to a least look them up.

On this and different forums, I do not see much backslash about this increase.
Last year the uprise and grunting over the store rate hikes was loud and clear.

Maybe I can borrow from another sellers successful selling strategy.

Start listing $.99 postcards with $6.00 shipping and refuse to combine purchases.

Wonder if that would work for me like it appears to for others?

And, I wonder how long Ebay is going to let that go on?

You're behind times. My husband wants me to raise the shipping fee to $7.00 to reflect an increase in non-eBay costs.

I do admire another seller in my category, though. Apparently tired of hearing non-buyers whine about her not combining purchases, now she does combine. Your first purchase is $6.00 to ship. Your second, third, fourth, etc. is only an additional $5.95 each.

I wonder how long Ebay is going to let that go on?

You're joking, right?

Well I guess my postcard seller had to change their way of doing business.

They now only charge $4.35 shipping for their $.99 postcards.

No I'm not kidding.

I have seen many sellers posting who only charge a small handling fee who have had their listings pulled by Ebay.

I'd like to know how they make those decisions.

It really should be all or none but then, as you know from your past problems with them....they aren't very logical about anything they do.

There is no rule saying that one must combine S/H. Also eBay does not set a scale for the amount to charge for S/H.

I always combine S/H for my customers but it is NOT required by eBay.

S/H has to be outrageous over the edge for eBay to get involved.

I have purchased several watches (for myself) paid $15-$18 each for S/H .
The Postage was no more than $4.05.
I paid what was clearly listed as the S/H charges - so how could I gripe?
I did not pay .99 for the watches both were over $60 (each)

So all-in-all if it is clearly stated in the listed terms the S/H charges and states or does not include that there is S/H combining what can eBay do?

Others have had their listings pulled for just going a couple of dollars over the actual cost. It does happen.

Here's an ebay discussion about it:

fluffy -- Why not believe me? I have nothing to gain by lying.

My sellthrough on books is 50% because I only list items that have a good chance of selling based on my 7 years of experience and thousands of sales. The shotgun approach to books has never worked on ebay. And I am not a big-time seller.

The 50% is cumulative after all relisting. The rate for first time listings is 35-40%.

Okay, if you're going to calculate sellthrough that way, I guess I've got 100% sellthrough. Everything sells, eventually. One way or another. Some things have sold more than once. This could get tricky.

Thanks for the clarification, though. I think.

Fluff, the 99 cent scenario doesn't work for all categories. I have followed several large sellers who tried the strategy for postcards with higher, non-combinable shipping and they either abandoned the pricing or were yanked by eBay. Others, with combinable shipping <2.00 are still listing but their ending price rarely exceeds $2.00 and their sell-through rate is only slightly above mine with started prices of $6.00-$10.00

That maybe a bit mis-leading however. Many of the complainers from the last hike have already told eBay to take a hike, so they simply aren't around for this round of un-ending fee hikes.

It's even more likely that they will be losing even more sellers after this round. Ebay is clearly on the downside of the mountain. Makes you wonder how much longer it will be until Google rolls out their auction service. Ebay better watch out when they do.

I think most of the complaining has come from people who are small time sellers who aren't affected very much. I saw this a lot with the store increases last year...Many of the biggest complainers had something like 100 items listed, and probably not many sales. It might cost them a few dollars more. The store increase was a big one to me, and I did complain...But I also acted. My store is less than half the size now, and I've found other distribution channels to handle the merchandise, and have done well with it. Ebay is still a part of my overall plan, but any change they make here won't have the monumental affect it has had in the past...They get a much smaller part of my business...and the auctions for me are now such a small part of my business, no point in complaining over something that may cost me $100 a year more.

Wow are you way off base. First, 5 cents per listing increase. That for the average seller will be over $100. But the to top it off, the increase in FVF's. This is way, way more than $100 per person. On average you can figure closer to $1000.

I doubt if Ebay cares if some sellers leave to go elsewhere or just stay home and read a book.
The same sellers who cant sell their merchandise on Ebay, what make you think they can sell them on Google??
or Epier,Yahoo,Bidville,Overstock or any obscure auction sites .
Like my Polish landlord in Chicago once commented on his daughter's promiscious behavior - she aint the only pussy in town!!

I am not offbase at all! I am not talking about the AVERAGE seller, I am talking about ME!!

I rarely run auctions anymore. I do most of my sales via fixed price, either using ebay stores or my own site, or other sites. If this were 2004, this would have cost me thousands of dollars. My point (if you read me message) was that I am a lot less dependent on ebay now than I was a couple of years ago. The only thing that would throw a big wrench in my business plan is if they doubled the cost of store items. There isn't much else that they can do at this point that will be a huge impact to me.

Ebayvet,
Ebay runs some numbers and found many Ebay stores as a parking lot for items which do not sell in auction.
An Ebay seller goes to garage sales and pick up many items at 25 cents (coffee mugs, ash trays, books,no brand perfume etc etc),list them once as auction,no bid, then put them in their Ebay store and hope someone will come along and buy them.

EBAY VET IS 100% CORRECT......I'VE BEEN WITH EBAY FROM THE START WITH OVER 20,000 FEEDBACKS (AND EVEN THOUGH WE STILL HAVE AN EBAY STORE) EBAY ONLY ACCOUNTS FOR ABOUT 10% OF OUR EFFORT. IT'S NEVER BEEN A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD FOR THE FEES APPLIED TO SMALL ITEMS VS. LARGE ITEMS LIKE AUTOMOBILES ETC.....EBAY HAS BECAME THE SITE THAT EVERYONE ASSOCIATES WITH SCAMS AND RIP OFFS.........IT'S EVEN HARD TO FEEL COMFORTABLE ANSWERING BUYERS QUESTIONS WITHOUT SOMEONE HACKING INTO YOUR ACCOUNT.......I'D SUGGEST LOOKING FOR OTHER PLACES TO SELL YOUR STUFF.....THAT'S WHAT WE'VE DONE (LIKE EBAY VET) SO I DON'T FEEL AS AFFECTED BY IT AS IN PAST YEARS FEE INCREASES...........I, LIKE PROBABLY TONS OF OTHER PEOOPLE WOULD NEVER HAVE DREAMED OF JUMPING SHIP FROM EBAY IF THEY WEREN'T SO ARROGANT......
