Wow neglus, that's cold. I don't know if any of you remember Jan. 1977. We were living in MI and moving to Missouri. The morning we left it was -32 and very windy, and we heard on the radio that in Chicago, which we had to go through, it was -90 with the wind chill. Only 2 cars in the parking lot of our school would start, it took a lot of help to get ours going. We had 4 small children including a 6 month old. Our car did 11 miles to the gallon on that trip, and by mid afternoon, it was so cold, the car heater couldn't keep up with it and we all started to get really cold.

We stopped at a gas station, and there was a car where the attendant had left the hose in the tank, and the gas had overflowed, and it has frozen all down the car and on the ground. There was a Holiday Inn behind it, and we decided it was time to stop and not go on to the friends we were supposed to be staying with. Even in the motel, the pipes froze in the night, and water was pouring down the wall in our room, and over the power points, so we had to gather up the children and all our luggage and go up 2 floors to another room.

That is a journey we will never forget, I have been nervous about travelling in extreme cold since then.

Take care all you folk living in the very cold weather.

Has anyone heard from Bizzy (Diane), I don't know where in Florida she lives, I just hope she is okay.

My parents bought a winter home near Dade City last winter. I spoke with her this evening. She told me the tornados were 40 miles north of her (Lake County) and another was 25 miles south. I believe another was not far from Daytona(?).

I had not called her, knowing she was not in the "danger zone" I didn't want to tie up the phone lines. I'm not certain what areas do not have power, but I would imagine that to be a problem.

Amber my heart skipped reading your post. It is awful to think of any adult traveling in that kind of weather... but with children. I suspect your family will be talking about that in the nursing home over turkey dinner. Nervous about traveling in cold weather... heck I'd have groceries delivered if I were you! You used up 3 cat lives on that trip girl!!

Twig, My parents have a winter home in Paisley, the other town worst hit. 13 people in that town died. Fortunately my parents home and Aunts and Uncles were one of those lucky "on the right side of the road places". PHEW
So the moral of this post... pick your poison.. warm weather and tornadoes .. cold weather and frozen roads pipes and cars! Where was that perfect place?

Read this and weep. It reached about 80 degrees here today but at 4 pm the temperature had dropped down to 73 degrees.

This afternoon my kitchen's cold water froze...not last night, but after I washed dishes... go figure....

It's been cold, actually it's been a frigid 5 degrees here. It's also been awfully windy today. Must be because the wind is hitting the kitchen wall.... Ugh!

And I'm still not willing to dodge tornadoes....unless the pipes break!

edited to add: Glad to hear your family was one of the lucky ones bj!

twig, good idea to let a little water trickle in very cold weather especially where pipes are on outside walls. Lot of people don't know this but hot water warm water can or will freeze faster than cold water or so I have found in certain circumstances. Don't know if that is really so but I have tested it and sure enough it does freeze faster or in the case of my test it did. Anyway it might have been this factor for it to freeze on you after doing dishes.

Wow Twig- where are you? It's also a good idea to keep the cabinet doors under the sink open during cold weather.

Irked - they showed an experiment on tv proving your point about hot water freezing faster than cold water. Evidently it is due to faster moving molecules. They threw a pan of boiling water into the air (remember it's been about -15 here for days) and the water vaporized and froze before hitting the ground.

I saw that boiling water toss, very impressive! The 'blue stuff' windshield washer fluid froze in my truck a couple of days ago and it is supposed to be good to 20 below! I guess wind chill counts, it has been anywhere from 0 to 30 below wind chill for several days here in northern Indiana. Also, my truck is very reluctant to start so I can go to the Post Office, one of these days it won't and the packies will just have to wait. Everyone take care please.

I haven't got to the post office for 5 days. It is about -0F without the wind, but the problem is that is has not stopped snowing in that time, so the highways are closed. Here is Canada we are used to cold snowy weather, but with extreme cold, snow and wind, visibility is very poor with the blowing snow, so plows can't get out. I have written to buyers waiting for packages and explained, there is nothing I can do, the mail truck can't get through even if I could get to the post office. I hope this won't mean negative feedbacks.

Thanks all! Today is going to be an encore presentation of yesterday....

I have had my kitchen cabinets open for almost two weeks now. I hadn't left the water trickling during the day, as I had been using the water.

I live in northcentral PA, not far from Corning, NY.

Ewwww BURR on the temperatures up north.
We did get some snow took this shot of my dog in back yard at 2:15AM when I caught her standing still for just a sec. She was loving it big time. Snow melted next day mostly. This was last Friday morning. Today it is a balmy 74 degrees. Yip eeee! I just hate cold weather. Snow is good to look at or go on vacation to see and play in but not like it is up north right now. Someone up there got 27 inches snow in 12 hours Yikes for sure.
Hope everyone up there is keeping warm and safe.

I think it was about 72 here today at 1PM. I had to wear a jacket when I rode my bike to the postoffice. But they predict some rain for the weekend so the weather outlook is a bit dismal.

Neg... not only do I have to wrap up in a blanket during the winter... there are days I have to wear gloves with the finger tips open. We live in a 150 year old farm house. (OH for my surburban home in Denver!) This is a leaky ole place. Its going to take years and lots of money to make it "good" It will happen in my life time I hope.

BJ - I list on our 3-season porch. We have installed storm windows, insulated the floor and have a gas stove but there's still a chilly draft on my tootsies and legs. Even so, I'd take this any day before the summer 85 degrees day out here with no ac!
