re: nutro - it came through on my Yorkie chat list email:
There are several Yorkie owners that are also experiencing problems with their Yorkies and they are feeding them Nutro dog food.
"Subject: Nutro Dry Food Problems
I have 4 dogs on Nutro Max dry food, and I've seen each of them having a little bit of bile vomiting, and eating grass, but no blood (Thank God!). I'm stopping their food immediately and switching to something else, what I have no idea just yet. I had thought I'd managed to escape this mess because I was feeding them the dry food, but I guess that isn't the case. I am so glad that my other dogs (including both of my fosters), eat canned prescription Science Diet formulas and one eats IVD Venison. IVD and Science Diet are two of the only major brands that I haven't seen on the list, and I haven't seen anything about veterinary formulas being part of the recall. I just hope that my dogs that have been on the dry food haven't had any damage from it. Should I take them in to have my vet check them even though they haven't shown any signs of bleeding? This is just a nightmare!"
"Subject: Re: Nutro Dry Dog Food Problems?
My dog was just in the vets for vomitting bile and on the way to the vets blood was just coming out of her rear end in chunks The vet said it was gastritis, but she was eating nutro dry food lamb and rice formula. If this happens to your dog take them to the vet immediately. She had to be on an IV for two days and now is doing better. She now is eating Eukanuba low residue for sensitive stomachs with boiled chicken and cottage cheese!"
"Hello everyone,
I hope you are enjoying this nice day....I just wanted to give you a little more info on the food recall.
I was feeding Nutro Max small bites (DRY) to my 3 Aussies and 1 Corgi. For the last 3 weeks on and off all 4 dogs have vomited
yellow bile. I did not think much of it because it was on and off...maybe they were eating snow...whatever. Then the recall...only wet?
My brother called me on Sunday on the way back from the Rescue show and his 10 yr old Sheltie spayed was vomiting bile on and off for a few days and now has blood in her urine. They brought in a UA and dog is being treated for a UA infection.
Yesterday he called me and his male-13 month old German Shepherd has blood in its urine...guess what...feeding DRY Nutro Max. Another UA to vets. No infection.
The dispatcher at the police department where I work over heard me talking to my brother...she has 2 mixes on Nutro Ultra DRY...they have
been vomiting bile on and off for about 4 weeks.
A women in my obedience class...her mother has a Terrier on Nutro All Natural DRY...dog is being treated for blood in urine.
The dispatcher called the FDA today and spoke with Bill Boiven (Spelling) at 781-596-7783. She gave him all our info and he contacted me.
Guess what!!! They have already started to launch an investigation on the dry dog food. They are getting millions of phone calls about this. He did tell me that the foods are processed by 2 different manufactures but this is way to coincidental.
Yes I have now put my dogs on boiled rice, hamburger and Wellness. Just thought some of you might want to know and maybe call if you are having problems. Seems to be more wide spread than wet or canned."

Oh gee! That is worrisome! I called Petsmart where we bought it and they say all the dry is safe. Have not seen any problem with Lacy.

from the Yorkie Chat list this morning:
2. More Info on Recalled Pet Food
3. Nutro (2)

Subject: More Info on Recalled Pet Food
Not to make anybody panic, but I just read a news story on the MSN home pag=
e that after more testing on the contaminated pet food that they found a ch=
emical that is used to make plastic. There are some excerpts from that sto=
ry below.
The one thing that caught my eye was that some of the contaminated wheat gl=
uten was shipped to an unnamed company that manufactures dry food. I know=
a number of people posted that they were having issues with some dry food =
also. =20
You may want to check the web site that manufactures the food or your dry f=
ood bag for wheat gluten as an ingredient.=20
Here are the paragraphs:
"The Food and Drug Administration said it found melamine in samples of the =
Menu Foods pet food, as well as in wheat gluten used as an ingredient. Corn=
ell University scientists also have found the chemical, sometimes used as a=
fertilizer, in the urine of sick cats, as well as in the kidney of one cat=
that died after eating the company=E2=80=99s wet food."
"The apparently melamine-contaminated wheat gluten also was shipped to an u=
nnamed company that manufactures dry pet food. The FDA is attempting to det=
ermine if that product, imported from China, was used to make any pet food,=
Sundlof said. There is no risk to human food, he told reporters."

Subject: Nutro
Hello Everyone,
I just got off of the phone with Nutro regarding problems with their dry dog food. I explained to them the problems that we have been experiencing after feeding our dogs their products. They have asked me to send in a sample of my dry food to analyze. If any of you would like to also do this their address is:
Nutro Products
445 Wilson Way
City of Industry, CA 91744
Also include your name, address, type of food and problems that your babies have been experiencing.
I went to PetSmart asking about this and the manager told me that Nutro has suspicions about a problem, but were not yet recalling. Great. I feed Nutro Lamb and rice, small bites, but changed to Royal Canine, which is not on the list and made at a different manufacturer. Since I've made the switch, not one of my dogs have thrown up bile.
Thanks
Sherri
Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to let you all know, I live about 20 minutes north of Panama City, Fl and our Petsmart has pulled all Nutro dry foods from the shelves this morning when I was in there.
I myself am going to start feeding my furbabies homemade foods such as chicken & rice and hamburger & rice. I am not going to take the chance of something happening to my furbabies.

I called my PetsMart and my Vet and both said there was no problem with Nutro. We have always fed our "child" Nutro Lamb and Rice. She is about 1/2 way into a 40 lb. bag so it seems a problem would have surfaced by now.
This is what the Nutro site says:
Nutro's dry pet foods do NOT contain wheat gluten.
Nutro's dry pet foods do NOT contain imported grains.
Nutro's dry pet foods are NOT produced by Menu Foods.
NONE of Nutro's dry pet foods are subject to the Menu Foods recall.
Pet owners should feel safe and confident feeding Nutro dry pet foods to their pets.
If there is a problem with the dry food it must be difference from the Menu problem. They also say that they make their own dry and only have some of the wet made by outside contractors.
If anyone gets more up to date info please share it.
