Adele, in the unlikely event you have to evacuate, make sure you take all those celebrity Christmas cards with you!
They're quite valuable and probably don't take up much space.

Neva, so glad your family is safe. There are worse losses than a home, my thoughts go out to your daughter.

My heart and prayers are with you all. It is like watching the fires of hell on a rampage. I pray for no more deaths. As hard as it is houses and stuff can be had again. Our family home burned to the ground in 1977,we still call it the black day. It was hard to stand in the street and watch it happening.. it would be hell to pack up a few things, turn your back and run. God bless you all.

My thoughts and prayers are with you. Neva, so glad your daughter is safe, things can be replaced, people can't. I am sure it is terrible to lose your home and possesions, and my heart aches for all those who have lost them, they are saying over 700 structures lost. I pray that the winds will drop, and that they will be able to get the fires under control.
Also, safety for the firefighters, they have an incredibly difficult job, they must be exhausted. My husband and I work for a missionary training school, and about 40 years ago, 7 of our young men went to help fight a fire in Fout Springs CA, they were in a valley when the winds changed and the fires changed direction, and they were all killed.

northwoodsguy: Yes, I have those cards on my short list, although it would seem frivolous, I guess, to anyone but an eBay seller!
Winds are much softer now, so we have hopes of ending this misery today. Although we haven't been directly affected by fire, we're all in mourning for those who've lost their homes.

Neva, I am so glad that your daughter is safe.
Adele, it sounds as though you are safe too so we hope it stays that way.
We live on a mountain on Vancouver Island and my biggest fear is not from the Tsunami that they threaten will hit here in the next big Earthquake or from the Hurricane that hit us last December but from seeing fire creep over the mountains all around.

My daughter called this a.m. and said they have like a relay system going where one neighbor calls one neighbor who calls another neighbor, and on down the line when they hear about someone's house. The smoke is so thick they can't check on their own house yet.

I am in Sooke just outside Victoria on the West coast and from this room I look out over the Olympic Peninsula in Washington.
I lived for 14 years in Parksville/Qualicum before moving here.
I love this Island but Forest fires are always a threat.

"# Fears that 3 fires may become monster blaze"
This is a "fear" started by the media, not by fire officials.
Really.
Almost completely discounted by the Ventura County Fire PIO on the local news this morning, but of course the Talking Head didn't listen to him. *Very* irresponsible reporting.

got an email from my daughter - they are staying with friends. No big news yet. The fire is 20% contained, and they may let themback in this weekend. There is a chance their house is still intact but just rumors. Here's hoping........

Hi all,
I heard from my niece. Their house is fine, just covered with ashes, soot & smoke. They don't know the status of the barn yet so they are staying in their big rig horse trailer at the Del Mar fairgrounds until Saturday then they will go home & start the clean-up. Their horses are just a stone's throw away, which is nice. Those horses are their kids!

GOOD NEWS - My daughter just called and her husband went by their house in Fallbrook and everything is OK. No fire retardant and no damage. What luck. Thanks for everyone's concern. Neva

That's wonderful, you must all be very relieved. I feel so sorry for all those who have not only lost their homes, but treasures that can never be replaced. Things like pictures, items from past relatives etc., and there is no monetary value you can put on things like that.

Great news, Neva.
I do hope the FBI catches the arsonists for that one fire that did the most damage. I believe the reward is now up to $250,000.

To make this eBay-specific (and not to sound too crass) -- but, now those who have insurance (which will be many of them) - and who are trying to piece their lives back together -- can come to eBay and reclaim any of their childhood memories (toys, games, collectibles, etc.)
Thank God there weren't more who died in this.
