Hi
I sold a necklace and the husband bought it for his wife. He left me pos. fb, he said: Just as described. Received in 3 days, looks great, wife loves it! It sold for $152.49
And now I receive this email from the wife.
"Sorry to say after trying the necklace out it is just
to big and heavy for my small neck, it is a very
lovely piece but just doesn't look good on me. Need to
know how you would like it returned to you. Again let
me say it is a very great piece.
How do you feel I should handle this?

Right after you give them the full refund, you might want to consider changing your refund policy.

Yes, it looks like you are stuck accepting a return but at least you won't have to pay shipping. Did you ask her why her husband already left positive feedback and said that she loved it? You might be able to shame her into keeping it if you bring that up but if she still wants to return it you are stuck.

Wasn't there a thread a while back about some one with a "tiny neck"? Sounds like they need $ for xmas to me but I think you are stuck.

Guess your right about my return policy...it does say it all...lol
But my thoughts were once feedback was left then to me this is ended. If this was a consignment piece then I would not be able to return her money because once FB is left I would have paid my consigner.

Does your return policy say anything about not returning consigned pieces? You might want to make that point clear though I'm not sure how to word such a thing.
If I were a picky, tiny necked woman, I wouldn't care that you had already paid the consignor if I wanted to return the necklace and your policy is to accept returns.
My neck could hold up half the world. Wah.

"But my thoughts were once feedback was left then to me this is ended."
Some sellers do say this in their listings but since you didn't, and since you have an open return policy, I think you are stuck. Even if you did state this, if they paid with a credit card they can still go to their CC company and force you to refund.

This is my email to her:
My return policy listed in my auction is the following:
Returns
Returns will be accepted for any reason for full bid price refund. Shipping is not refundable and shipping cost back is not refundable.
Also, please add tracking number on package and when I shipped it to you I paid insurance on the package, you might want to also insure it .
Please let me know when you ship it.

Ugh!
PLEASE blame ole LARD-BUTT for the following opinion -- BLAME DA DAWG,PLEASE!
"Returns will be accepted for any reason for full bid price refund..."
Ideally, your return "policy" is: "NO RETURNS / NO REFUNDS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES"
Once ya offer anything else, I think there are legal implications & obligations that one has to stick with...
1) How long does this "return" offer run? 1 week? 10 years? It is not stated...
2) "any reason" could open you to the buyer emailing you 3 years from now and telling you that they are "sick and tired" of this piece, and want to return it for a FULL REFUND OF THEIR BID PRICE...Ugh!
PLEASE re-write your RETURN policy to include a time limit and PLEASE get rid of the open-ended subjective sink-hole of "any reason."
PLUS: remember to blame RALPHIE for the above opinion! I'm asleep...

Toni,
That's right about the consignor payments, which is why we have a 7-day limit (after delivery) on being notified of a problem. Once notified, we hold off on paying the consignor until something has been worked out.

Tom, I do see that I'm open to anything with the return policy I have stated......lol
Time to change it!
Guess I've been lucky since out of all my sales this is the first time someone wanted to return something.
Cash ..I will use your 7-day limit (after delivery) on being notified of a problem since at times I do list Consignment items.
Thanks everyone for all the help. Now I will wait to hear back from her.

I'm guessing the wife SAID she loved it, and might have until she tried it on. Meanwhile, the husband had left feedback for you.

Toni,
FWIW, this is our returns policy, which you might want to adjust to your preferences:
All items are sold as described. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, all photos are of the actual item being auctioned.
We accept returns only if the item is materially not as described in the auction. The buyer must contact us to arrange a return within 7 days of receipt; please do not return an item without our authorization -- we will not accept delivery of unauthorized returns (i.e., those without an authorization number written on the box). The buyer is responsible for return shipping; we take no responsibility for items returned without insurance.
Please do not assume that something is included in the auction (for example, warranties, user manuals, original box, etc.), unless we state it in the description, or include photos of it. If you have any questions about whether something is included, please email us with your question prior to bidding.

If you accept PayPal, it doesn't matter what your return policy states. Sometimes I wonder why I bother even having one?

"If you accept PayPal, it doesn't matter what your return policy states. Sometimes I wonder why I bother even having one?"
This may be true, but, from what I've read, CREDIT CARD ISSUERS do require merchants to display a RETURNS/REFUNDS policy...
I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that they will virtually automatically rule AGAINST the merchant if such policy is not displayed somewhere...

I'm guessing the wife told hubby she loved it, but she decided she'd rather have the money for Christmas. How often do people return gifts to retail stores and accept a store gift card in return? Well, all the time.
What kind of necklace was this that sold for $152.49? I'm curious.

I peeked. It's Mexican silver with inlaid stones. Collar style. Nice piece, no way would it look good on my fat neck but I would think that a tiny necked person would be able to wear it well.
I feel sorry for her husband. Sometimes we (women) need to say "thank you" and then just shut up and wear the jewelry our men lovingly select for us with pride, even if we do have tiny necks.

Tom is right. I recovered 311.00 on a jewelry assortment because I paid with a CC, through PayPal. There was no mention of return policy.
That was the only thing the CC people wanted to know...what was the return policy. There wasn't any & for that reason I got my money back.
Had the seller said no returns I would still have that box of junky jewelry.

I was going to put this into my auctions as my return policy. Do you think this covers it all.
All items are sold as described. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, all photos are of the actual item being auctioned.
Returns are only accepted if the item was not correctly described. Returns are not accepted for any other reasons.
The buyer must contact us to arrange a return within 3 business days of receiving item;

One of the "accepts" became an "except."
3 days might be a bit short, but maybe you could say 3 business days.

You might also want to include that shipping will not be reimbursed and that insurance is required on return shipments if you sell expensive items. It's also not unusual to have a restocking fee which covers your eBay and PayPal fees. Edited to add: Oops, I posted that and then realized you had said no returns unless not as described. Maybe you should pay shipping + no restockimg charges.

You might be right pimimom, but I figured with the new wording now If I made the mistake in the description then I should pay for shipping it back to me.
Also, you just made me realize that when I listed this necklace I used Feature Auction which cost me 19.95 extra and now I already told her to return it but maybe I should have mentioned to her that she should pay me the 19.95 for my listing expense since this is not my fault that she has a small neck...lol
