The collective plural is a proud UK convention, though by no means universally adopted there. "The BBC are..." or "The BBC have been..." We Merkins sometimes do it with the names of sports teams and badly-managed companies.

eBay are considered mostly oblivious of the seller boycott.

I just looked at OLA. Not a single one of the 525 US view postcards has a bid - lowest price was $.25 and only 3 had prices higher than my usual STARTING bid at eBay. Not yet ready for prime-time.

I think that it's a US/UK (and maybe Canada) thing. I once had a Brit working for me, and he would say "IBM are going to..." whereas we would say "IBM is going to..."

You say potato, and I say potato...

BTW, he's the same guy who, when he first arrived in US, was told before his first meeting with his boss (someone other than me) that the boss was pissed. He assumed that the boss was drunk rather than angry. He stayed in the US for many years, and upon going back to the UK, was to meet his UK boss who he was warned was pissed... Not to say that we were a group of angry drunks, but if the shoe fits

Claude

PS I want to be clear that I've never been drunk at work (or any other time for that matter), though I could get angry sometimes.

edited to add: I didn't flip to the second page, so didn't notice Fluffy's answer before I posted mine.

If the "exodus" is to ola.com, good luck! Talk about not-ready-for-prime-time!

Out of curiousity, I browsed the site. First category, Antique Lamps lists shows a count of 1560. Click on the category, shows a count of 409. Look at the listings themselves, and it appears to be a random collection of listings, from glass and china to DVDs to lawn and garden equipment. I looked at another category with a high count number, and noticed that adding the subcategories came nowhere near the total shown for the entire category. Of course, looking through listings ending today there were no bids anyway, so probably a moot point.

I don't think eBay (is, are) losing any sleep over this one. But now I am wondering if there is some link between USA Toady (intention spelling change there) and ola.com. Even with their journalism level, they should have noticed these sites are mosquitos on the elephant's back.

You mean you have luck in moving your bidders to another auction site?
Please do share your secrets??
hwahwa:
Actually, the sales were NOT from my existing customers, although I have compiled an e-mail to my repeat buyers that is ready to go when I have more items listed on OLA (I typically average 40-60 auctions and only have a few over there right now).

The sales were a result of the eBaY boycott forums ~ buyer/seller to buyer/seller support. Totally new buyers for me!
I have no auctions listed on eBaY right now and will probably end up with an 80%off/20%eBaY mix for my primary ID (powerseller) around March 1st. Not sure where I will be listing my secondary id stuff ~ probably almost the exact opposite mix with most of it on eBaY!

Fluffy:
Not that you care but I had much more respect for you before you started sidestepping and talking out of both sides of your mouth.

Sorry to drag this off the original topic, but this ola.com is addictively amusing. Just looking at random listings, the mis-attributions, weird descriptions/categories, vagueness, and the usual humorous spelling errors (the infamous sugar bowel can be found here) is distracting me from other work. Could this site actually be an eBay creation, to lure the weird off of eBay proper, and then somehow cut them loose?

That was really a funny thought. The comic possibilities are endless. No offense to OLA; I haven't been there myself.

Nearly three years ago, we drove to Oregon (I don't fly) to attend our niece's wedding. Somewhere along I-5, in a remote stretch, there was a billboard for OnlineAuction.com. We looked at each other, never having heard of this entity before. Found on the web later (the iPhone was still two years off) and it was pretty obvious OnlineAuction, despite having nailed down a pretty good domain name, was not much of an endeavor.

Well, at least they had enough money then to put up a billboard out in the middle of nowhere and they're getting more than their allotted 15 minutes of fame now.

You're right, they are all name, not substance (all hat, no cattle) - They have 244 items listed under Music CD - They even have it spelled as compact disks instead of compact discs, the more standardized spelling. Sorry, but that is just pathetic.

All Starbucks will be closed from 5:30-8:30 this evening for an internal pep rally.
I heard it has to do with training, how to make coffee faster.
And Dunkin Donuts is offering 99 cents coffee from 5;30 - 8:30 this evening.

I dont understand why someone would start 'ANOTHER AUCTION SITE'??
Why cant they just take over an existing one and pump some advertising dollars into it?
What happens is that seller will list the same items on multiple sites.

no, fluffy, you're not.

Oh. Well, thanks for setting me straight.

Say, I can't decide what to have for dinner tonight. Could you take a moment and tell me what it is I really want?

You want to be a good Ebay bidder and stroll over to DUNKIN DONUTS and grab that 99 cents latte while the Starbuck workers are learning new tricks tonight.
