Did not have time before Xmas to take advantage of all the Xmas sales due to trauma drama in the family. Walked into wallyworld last night for some milk and bread and felt the need to check out the electronics section. Found an emachines 250 netbook with WIN 7, 1gb mem and 250gb drive for $228!

I do not normally have a very high opinion of emachines so I did not open the box until I had time to check online reviews of the system. Reading the reviews at Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Acer-eMachines-eM250-1162-Netbook-Wireless/product-reviews/B00323G71S/ref=dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1 convinced me that I had found a winner. This netbook is listed for $279 at Amazon and reviews say it is the same exact machine as the Acer 250 only the Acer only has a 160gb drive before upgrades and costs about $100 more.

I've been playing with it this morning and must say that I am impressed. Graphics are excellent. speed is good but I will porbably upgrade to 2gb because it slows down with multiple tabs open. Weight is great. It is as easy to carry around as a paperback book. Setup was quick and easy. I had it configured and on online in less than 30 minutes (including download time for AVAST anti-virus and configuring it to our secure home network). Only downside is the tiny keyboard but if you are a texter you probably would not even notice.

Best visit Walmart and grab yours before they are all sold out. I think there were about 6 left at our local wallyworld. Some people left Amazon reviews saying they have even found them in California for just $199.

I have a question for the techies. I spend a lot of time in areas where I only have dial-up access. Have not had much luck learning what it will take to add a dial-up modem to this. Any ideas? Anyone found an easy solution. DLS is not an option because I spend time in different remote locations. Phone line is usually available but wireless and cell signals are non existant.

After reading your post, I rushed right out to Walmart to buy one. Wisconsin price is $279. Needless to say, I'm entering this on my home computer.

LtRay,
I'm far from being a techie, but I read that there are dial up modems that plug into a usb port. You might check into that.

Sorry Max. I could check to see if there are any left here. Mine was $241 with tax and shipping would be 8 lbs from 32412.

I have been surfing and it looks like the Zoom 3095 external usb modem is the way to go. Also realized that I want the extra gig of memory sooner rather than later. I tend to keep mulitple windows open and run several apps at the same time and this 1 gb stays allocated. I have not yet cleared off the MS junk yet so that may clear up some resources.

max - you didn't read this review at Amazon huh?

"Purchased this unit on Friday, Jan. 8th, 2010 at Walmart. The clerks told me they no longer had them and when I saw three of them in the cage he then told me they were no longer $228 but now were $279. I told him I wanted to see the box so he got one out and then I told him to scan it. He was a little reluctant to admit it was still $228 but did so."

well Walmart always brags about matching prices so they ought to match their own prices. have D scan her receipt and you take to the store and make them match their own price. Have them scan the box - maybe there's mistake in pricing on the shelf. I'd have the manager come over

If you really want one that is.

I have a question on broadband?
What is the difference between phone broadband and cable broadband?
I have land phone served by Windstream phone co and I have internet access thru Comcast Cable,I paid Comcast 60 dollars per month.
My phone bill averages 35 dollars per month.
Now Windstream offered me a deal, for 61 dollars per month( this is good for life-61 dollars),I get landphone unlimited local and domestic long distance plus broardband 6mg.
I dont call long distance much, but still it is a 34 dollars saving?
Which is better, cable or phone broadband?
thanks in advance
PS I am one of those folks who dont have a cell phone and dont need one either,is land line going the way of dinasaur? Is that why they want to offer a combo deal to save their skin?
I dont know how cable Tv fits in,but will a phone co some day offer Tv??

I’m served by ATT (phone) and Warner Cable (television). I have my internet service with ATT. It’s much slower than Warner (Road Runner). I can get phone service thru Warner, and television thru ATT. The reason I continue phone thru ATT is Warner is higher priced for phone, and ATT is higher for television.
I’m not familiar with either of your servers, but it seems 6mg is plenty fast. I have 1.5 mg on a good day.
Life is a compromise.

I hate Dishnetwork but when I bought this house,I have no choice but sign up with Dish.
Dish wants us to hook it up with a phone line else it would charge us 5 dollars a month, thats why you see us rushing to buy an easyjack for that reason.
Anyway,my neighbor does not have a land phone so Dishnetwork said fine,no problem, you cant hook up if you dont have a line .
But down the road,it will be cheaper if I get a package deal for phone, internet and TV.
I think Comcast has that.

I got an Acer for Christmas. Don't know which model it is but it runs XP. I can have five or six tabs open with no problem.

I bought the wife an ASUS EeeMachine netbook for Christmas. 349.00 including a matching USB optical drive. Runs Win7 starter edition. Nice little machine for her, all she does is check email, bank and keep her iPod music organized. Plus, it gives me an added advantage in not being responsible for troubleshooting a Win-doze machine.

Fluffy, 5 or 6 tabs not a problem. Mem usage about 75% but open an application like excel or a pdf file and usage jumps to 98%. I will get around to cleaning up the background processes soon and see if performance improves. either way, 1gb on WIN7 is still better than dealing with Vista even with 4gb on my HP laptop.

BING cashback at Sears is currently 20%. It doesn't look like it until you put something in the cart.

Got my new laptop - FINALLY - yay me.

Lenovo U350 13.3 INCH NOTEBOOK 320GB $599 with 20% cashback from BING of $119.00.

Sells on the Lenovo website for $649.00

If you do buy something on Sears using Bing Cashback - Fatwallet members recommend you save screenshots of each step of the checkout transaction. There have been times that Sears has messed up on the Cashback so CYA.

AGAIN TAKE SCREEN SHOTS VERIFYING 20%

ALSO - you can do BING cashback with Walmart!

That is 15% cashback so the $298 online Acer is $44.69 off shipped to store free - if that helps.

I could not find this netbook on the walmart site. I checked because I had considered taking advantage of the bing cash and doing a ship to store purchase.

Max if youwould like a copy of my receipt just let me know.

GG, How is T doing? Lisa is still hanging in there but barely.

Thanks for the offer LTRay, but I guess I can wait for another deal to come along. I've found that when I take the plunge to buy something, a better deal pops up shortly thereafter.

Footnote
In my travels today, checked another Walmart. Their price was $268.00 on box. I had them scan the code, and it still came up $268. Darn

I have to say that the LED backlight is the way to go. I can't remember where I read it on the Lenovo website about how much longer the LED lasts versus the regular VGA or whatever a normal laptop monitor uses but it was somewhat astounding and a no-brainer to me. This is gorgeous. Don't like the glossy screen much that Lenovo insists on using but it seems to be the default that they install. It's super quiet and doesn't get hot at all.

So when you are in the market for a new laptop look for LED display. You won't be sorry.

The LED display does have amazing detail to be so small. I wonder how long the backlight will last?

As for battery time, 3 hours is more than enough for my limited attention span

Tech question: My daughter wants to get a Netbook. She has Internet on her phone (unlimited) through Verizon. She'd rather access it on a Netbook where she can better see what she's doing. Anyone know how to do that with Verizon and a Netbook? The Netbooks don't have a CD drive.

Cheryl, I could be wrong but I think she would need a USB cellular modem. Tell her to be cautious about any "free netbook" deal Verizon offers her -- these are just as bad as "free cellphone" deals once were (and probably still are).

Uh - when you get that new small size netbook or whatever - that doesn't come with a CD drive - don't forget to BACK IT UP - the minute you take it out of the box....THE MINUTE you turn it ON.

You'll need that at some point down the road.

Waiting for Lenovo to call me back - sheesh.

I didn't do it - they have a ONE KEY rescue button but if you don't do it in the correct order - it creates a third partition and THEN you can't get back to the ORIGINAL state - which is what you want if you ever have to format your computer. The Lenovo forum said if you delete the third partition that you can get that ONE KEY rescue state back - well - I have the black screen of death - NOS. Not really worried about it since I'm under warranty. Just aggravating. They said they'd send me some Restore Disks - which is probably better anyway. How embarrassing

Thanks, Fluffy. I think she's just going to call AT&T and get their Internet deal. You no longer need a home phone and it's relatively cheap these days. That way, she'll be able to eliminate the Internet on her phone altogether and I won't get the "Mom, can I come over and use your Internet" phone calls anymore.

If she wants to stay with Verizon - she can search Craiglook - they have some cheap prices on the Verizon USB - make sure she pays with PP.

Craiglook.com searches all of Craigslist - they could probably mail it to her.

I am officially excited!
I have had my eye on an Acer Aspire Netbook since last year.

Finally after two serious weeks of comparison shopping here in Victoria I picked one up today for $249 at our newly opened Best Buy! Future Shop was the highest at $329. I am talking Canadian dollars.

MY DH could really not see what difference the colour made but I really wanted a red one but they were all sold out so I got me a purty electric blue one. I just know that will make it work so much better...LOL!!

I was just setting it up and it looks as though it will be perfect but I am just going to have to use a mouse. I can't stand that thingy on the laptops/Netbooks that moves the mouse around. I spend most of my time playing...chase the cursor!

Off to play with my new baby!
