You get what you pay for,if it sounds too good to be true,then............
You wade into the mother land of fakes and knockoffs and deal with the worst bunch-the small sellers and you are asking for protection??
GIVE ME A BREAK !
MY SUGGESTION IS BUY A kwAN Yin buddha of mercy statue (repro of course)and pray to her every night.
But then on second thought, keep buying from them,I will be disposing my parents's 50 years old mildew infested condo soon and I am counting on the wealthy Chinese to pay 2-3 million US DOLLARS FOR IT.

You can get buyer protection through aliexpress using their escrow service... except if you live in Arizona, California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon and Washington.
You brought up a good point about Chinese companies and their ties to the government: while many companies in China are owned by the government, Alibaba Group (worth around 50B) is privately held. Yahoo and Softbank are both investors. Alibaba.com is a segment of Alibaba Group and it's publicly traded on the Hong Kong stock exchange. Therefore, they have every interest to succeed.
There also seems to be a lot of confusion with Alibaba.com and AliExpress. Here's a quick summary:
Alibaba.com (the company that acquired Vendio and parent of AliExpress.com) is a platform that connects suppliers and merchants. It's intended for larger merchants where you can create and customize almost any product. No transactions happen on Alibaba.com.
AliExpress.com is a self-serve wholesale site where merchants can negotiate and purchase smaller quantities. They can even personalize products. AliExpress supports online transactions via AliPay and offers merchants Buyer Escrow Protection where payment is held in escrow until the merchant receives the goods AND is satisfied.
Further, the perception of Alibaba.com as "all Chinese" is also incorrect. They work with importers from all over the world - with only 50% from Asia. AliExpress, on the other hand, does only work with Asian suppliers at the moment, but the hope is to also grow that into an international platform.
Vendio is working with closely with the AliExpress.com team to create offers unique only to Vendio merchants. I know there are other questions and I'll be back to respond
Best regards, Helen

I never say Alibaba and its affiliates is all Chinese, there are IndiAN,Indonesian,AFRICAN,Vietnamese,Thai.
But the general lineup is Western countries seeking to buy and Asia countries looking to sell.
I am in Hong Kong right now and plenty of companies seeking IPO on HK stock exchange, does it offer more credibility, transparency? do your own dilgence.
Lets not forget AIG is a multi billion dollars company listed on NYSE.
Anyway, like Frank Lucas in the movie American Gangster likes
to say,the only way to find out is to find out!
Good luck and happy hunting!
