Maybe that should be Xardon, take me away!
Ok, let's keep these fluffy threads going so we can all make nice with one another.
Where IN THE UNITED STATES is your favorite vacation spot? I would really like to know because I haven't had a vacation since 1978 and I need one bad!!

Lots of hills and mountains. Not alot of large cities. Plenty of open space, too. Drove thru it once on a road trip. Didnt vacation there at all, but from what I remember, I want to go back and stay for a visit.
My idea of a vacation is Germany, Irish/Scottish isles. Never been there either, but would like to visit someday.

My favorite vacation spot is the Oregon coast. The ocean scenery is beautiful! Go a little further south and you're in the California redwood forests.
Thanks, Muriel, for the kinder and gentler threads. A couple of the others make me want to spew blood from my ears....

Our new favorite spot is Catalina Island, off the coast from L.A. Tiny town (most of the island is preserved) and a snails pace. Our room didn't even have a phone in it! Our hotel was like 10 steps from the beach. We got so relaxed, we almost missed our ferry back!
We also like N. California. We both love S.F. and I've been as far north as Eureka, just beautiful. Much different atmosphere than S. California.

Taos, New Mexico. The most heart-stoppingly beautiful place I have ever been in my life.
Although San Francisco is wonderful, and I gotta admit, I would miss the dim sum if I spent my whole life in Taos.

about partial birth abortions again.
Maybe sitting on the curb would be fun.

Sanibel Island off the west coast of Florida.
One of the 10 best places in the world to shell. We had a large (7 foot) alligator in the pond outside our room and whenever I went out it would stop whatever it was doing and face me and if I walked around the pond it would turn and follow me - never took it's eyes off me.
Ignored everyone else.
I said to my wife it probably thinks that's a lot of meat. She pointed out it retreated to the center of the pond. She instead said it was thinking anything that big has to be dangerous.

Hi Gravid, I am drawn to the warmer climes for vacation and had forgotten how much I loved that area "Sanibel Island" we had been in the keyes travelled up the east coast to Alligator Alley and then across to the Gulf side. We even got the Sanibel "Stoop" shelling.

I grew up in Montana, so a visit there is a visit to family. I'm not sure if that is a vacation or not. But there are some great places to visit.
I went to New York City, loved it and loved upstate New York too....
Next I want to go to Boston... or maybe someplace down south.

lol! Sitting on the curb is good too. I remember doing that when a teen. Friends would come to my house and we would sit there under the street light, sneaking cigarettes and yakking away. Sometimes up to midnight. Parents didnt care, because they knew we were right outside (I lived in a corner house).

My favorite vacations have been spent on the road with no particular destination in mind. I used to travel on a motorcycle and camp in likely spots by the side of the highway. I now use my car and stay at roadside motels or B&B's. I usually find someplace nice to hang out for a few days.
There's a book called "Blue Highways" by William LeastHeat Moon that nicely describes this sort of a getaway. The blue highway's
are the secondary roads on a roadmap.
I don't pack much, a couple changes of clothes, some books, and a fishing rod.
With the family I usually just go to the shore or the mountains....but that's not really a vacation.

Mesquite, Texas because my best friend in the world lives there and we see far too little of each other.
I just posted on a question on another thread about Montana and whether its a nice place to visit-planning a road trip/honeymoon in September and we were considering stopping there. Thanks, I guess I have my answer!
I also want to include my worst choice-Nashville, Tennessee. I have never had good experiences there.

CHICAGO!!!!
The minute I see the skyline from the plane, I get excited. That city just gets my juices flowing.
Went to a Bears game. First and only time I've been to a pro football game. Thought I would freeze to death.
Took in an early season Cubs game and sang "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" with Harry Cary. Thought I would freeze to death. (I was in a down coat; the natives were in lightweight jackets.)
My sister lived there, but moved down south about 6 years ago. Wondering if I'll ever see Chicago again.

Well, there is Jimmy Buffet's, Margaritaville, funny printed tee shirts every other store on the main drag, balmy weather, beautiful sand....lots of water, snorkeling, boating, swimming. Good food and that really long bridge out to the islands where you feel like you're driving on water.
Flagler's hotel was neat, Hemmingways house and cats...interesting graveyards (above ground) Many historical places to visit...it's been a lotta years since I was there. There is also a museum of the Attocia(sp?) treasure.
Oh and the gathering in the evening to watch the sun set....with drink in hand and good camaraderie waiting for the "Green Flash."

Maui (at least before United Airlines ruined my return home). Best holiday I have ever had.
But what can you expect of someone living in cold, grey, wet, grey, wet, slushy, cold London?
