I see what is wrong. You have to host it somewhere. Cant be straight from your pc. Do you have an FTP space? Or upload it here in AW if you paid for their services.

Bobbi, go to one of the other gifs in this thread and right click on it. Then click properties. It will show the urls of where the pics are coming from. Cut and paste one, as a test drive, so to speak, and try to post it yourself here with the code I showed you. Once you learn how to put it in, then you can do your own once its hosted somewhere.

Hepburn - What I did was go to this site that had gifs and I right clicked on it and clicked on "save as" and I put it in "my documents". Then, in my documents I right clicked on the pic and copied the name, then pasted it on here and added the [] and [/] ..... is there an easier way to do this? I'm just learnin'! I'll take all the hints and tips I can get! Thanks Hep!

Wish I knew how to do a "huh" gif, because what you just said is making me look like that
Use the dragon I have up there. Click on it and dont save it to your hard drive. Just highlight the url after you click PROPERTIES. Then cut and paste it here as a test. Once you save something to your hard drive, its just there, in your pc. To make it show up somewhere, you have to host it. Like here in AW in their image hosting. That is, if you want to keep it for yourself. If you just want to post a gif you see from somewhere else, cut and paste it. I think that is a no no, but not sure. Im about as pc smart as a bug, myself.

hepburn - Say it's one that I might want to use frequently, then I'd want to click "save as" ...... am I right? These are probably stupid questions, but a computer genius I am NOT

When I see something I like, I "save as" in a folder, then name it what I want it to be so I know what it is. Then you have to host it somewhere.

I just looked at your little X, and it shows its now in your pc. You have to cut and paste the url from where you found it, not save it in your hard drive. It is hosted on the other persons hosting site. Right now, its just in your pc. No place else. It must be hosted somewhere, with an url. Go to where you found it, then click on it with a right click and do the same thing to it that you did to the dragon, but DONT save it as a SAVE AS. Just cut and paste the url from where it is.

An URL is the address from where something is at. What you have in your pc is just a title of something. Cant see it unless it has an address. The address is the URL. No url in your pc. (Hope that makes sense).

If you sell on ebay, you take pics. They are in your computer, but they wont be seen unless they are hosted someplace. AW offers that, but now you have to pay for it. Unless you are on an ISP that offers FTP space, then you can host it yourself in THEIR servers.

The dragon is hosted at barrysclipart. The horse that capriole just posted is hosted at that site. It has to have a image host.
Sure wish someone could help me explain this, lol. I think the blind is leading the blind here

Let me try to explain it another way. You have a picture of yourself on your wall. You want to show it to the world. Only way to do that is take it to a newspaper and they print it out and send it along to the world, via the newspaper. Same thing with gifs you see on the internet. You can hang it on your pc wall, but nobody will see it but you. To show it to everyone else, you have to take it to a newspaper (image hosting service). If you dont want to keep the picture, you can "borrow" it by showing it from someone elses newspaper by cutting and pasting it. But like I said, I think that takes up bandwidth (whatever that means). In short, it is frowned on. So, the best thing to do is what you did, but you have to HOST it yourself, by downloading it like you did to your own harddrive, then image hosting it with your own image hosting service.
(somebody...HELP!)

Posting an image on the internet 101
Generally posting an image URL from another site is considered bad netiquette because to view the image, that URL from whence it came has to get a 'hit' - you are using their bandwidth. Of course, if they don't care, then there is no problem. (this is JMHO and not a steadfast rule)
The best method that will keep you out of trouble:
1. Find the image you want from the public domain, right click on it and 'save picture as' (different browsers use different but similar terminology)
2. A box pops up for you to save it to your computer... save it in a folder or to your desktop or at least some place that you can find later!
3. Now you must get that image out of your computer and onto a server that hosts images... i.e. your ISP may give you some storage space or a service like AuctionWatch.com. Let's say you are using AuctionWatch.com.
4. Go to Auction Manager then the image hosting link,
a)
click on 'browse' button to see the files on your computer
b)find your image, click on it to highlight the image or the image name (depending on Windows version)..
c)now click on 'open'
d)click on 'upload'
3. Right click on uploaded image and click on 'properties'
4. Copy the Address (URL)
5. Come to the board and paste the Address (URL) and surround it with this code without the $'s:
[$img]http://imagehost.auctionwatch.com/preview/jo/joice/lepra.gif[$/img]
That code and that URL will let you see my new best friend that lives in my AuctionWatch.com server space:
Are you totally confused now?
