BEST: The Hoh Valley Rainforest in Western Washington State. An unbelievably beautiful, misty rainforest of acres and acres of cedar trees, hanging moss, wildlife and trails--the largest rainforest in Continental North America. It rains 300 out of every 365 days there. Fascinating microclimates---sometimes it's pouring inside the veil of the rainforest but when you walk outside--perhaps only 10 steps away from the curtain of old-growth trees--the weather is completely dry. Rangers give regular tours on a daily basis. Everyone *must* see it before they die.

WORST: St. Louis, Missouri and Needles, California.

I'll have to agree with the Hoh rain forest as a great place to stop. Fascinating place to visit.

We used to do road trips camping in the 50's and 60'sm With no interstate highways we usually went through Kansas. Kansas seems to be one big corn field and it was so hot that after the first couple times we would drive through at night so we could get past it and miss the worst of the heat. This was before air conditionong in cars was common. I never understood why anyone would live there whose life did not center around raising corn. The high point of Kansas for us was in the west after we drove all night there was a small town cafe we would stop at for breakfast before stopping to sleep. They served a breakfast for the farmers that must have been 4000 calories. A triple heap of shredded potatoes with onions mixed in and eggs with ham steaks hand cut and sausage and bacon.
Pancakes and coffee that was so strong it was like expresso. Even though your normal sleeping time was disrupted you could get to sleep easy after that breakfast!

Speaking of forests, the Redwood Forest between S.F. and Eureka, CA is awesome! I was so bummed DH wasn't with me on that trip, he would've loved it But most places that are green and have trees fascinate me, I grew up in the desert Oh, and if you ever find yourself in Portland, OR you must visit The Grotto. It's a Catholic sanctuary that's open to the public. Very beautiful and peaceful and you're not pressured about the religion either
