Obviously, I don't agree. There are many
legitimate reasons for abortion and on the
other hand it depends on just when you believe life begins.
I do not take abortion lightly and only under
extraordinary circumstances would I have an
abortion, yet I believe that every individual
should have the right and responsibility to make this decision.

But, there is no legitimate reason for the death penalty? A taking of a life is no different if it is by abortion or by the death penalty.

Helen, I don't take pleasure in the death penalty, but I view it as an appropriate punishment for the worst crimes. I do not think it is for the people to administer, as some seem to suggest they'd prefer. I think it is the duty of the state, as representatives of the people. While it would be immoral for one man to kill another, we all agree that there are special cirumstances where killing is allowed -- such as war (a grim reality, but reality nontheless). Rare is the true pacifist who cannot conceive of any just war. Rare is the person who will not raise a hand againt a sword to his own throat. So barring someone who is truly pacifistic, without exception we'd all agree that special circumstances call for special action. Such is the case in personal self-defense, war, and I believe, the death penalty for the worst of criminals.
Thank you for your response. I appreciate the
fact that you were able to express how you feel without attacking me personally.
I, of course don't agree because I feel that
it is simply wrong to kill another human being outside self defense or war. Added to that is the possibility that an error could be made. There also seems to be a disproportionate number of poor, underpriviledged people under death sentences because of inadequate legal representation. And more important, I think
that it's barbaric.
