hcross, I am 30 and I dunno about everyone else, but that's when I started falling apart! Doesn't that make you feel better?
Seriously, mine was a combination of about 2 years of solid emotional and physical stress combined with I wasn't paying attention to my own body and let things slide by. I've had a bad back since I was a teenager and I should know better. But I was on an adreneline rush I swear for those 2 years. That's the only reason why I think I came out of it still half way sane!

gravid- you get "stuck" driving and your vision gets blurred so your doctor gives you stronger medication? are you saying that you are driving under the influence or did i misunderstand?

No - Not from medication or booze -If the pain gets bad enough I tear involuntarily and it blurs the vision. Can't help it. Sometimes in hurts like someone ran a icepick through my knee and is twisting it and the tears just come. I don't do the classic cry with the sobbing and labored breathing but I can't stop the tears. One day I went down with my wife and both knees and my left foot were like that and I said give me 5 minutes and it will be OK but it was not so she had to drive.
Makes them look funny at Home Depot when you come up to the register and the tears are dripping off your cheeks. They kind of look at each other.
I could stay home but heck - it hurts whether you stay home or go.
I won't go drive even if I have had one beer. I will wait an hour at least. I could probably pass a breath test on one but I don't even want to smell like it.

Just a comment - I have been in a couple pretty bad accidents. I have had my left arm opened up so the whole bone structure of the elbow was exposed and you could see it work and a slice all the way down my arm to the bone to the end of my middle finger. The pain from that was not anything as bad as arthritic pain. When EMS got to me after the accident I had pulled my t- shirt over the arm and wound it around in a spirol and then bent the arm to make it tight and he wanted to undo it and I would not allow him to undo it before he transported me to emergency. I told him I have a real bad squirter there and when I take this off I want a surgeon standing right there. He stopped arguing and got me to the hospital in about 4 minutes.
It really did not hurt that bad at all. Hurt a lot worse the next day.

gravid, you must be going nuts with pain. I know that arthritis is supposed to be one seriously painful disease, so I really feel for you guy! Have you tried just straight codiene? It does bind you up like Antiquary mentioned, but it might be worth asking about.
Oh, I just saw your post Shosh! (It's so nice to see you "back" again!) P.S. Is that what Mary McGuire means??

Thanks for the referance. I did a search and all I could find was an artist that does ditzy little folk pieces. I will run the movie again.
Guys do like to share their horror stories. We lived in an apartment complex and one of the guys who lived there was a Vietnam vet who had been shot. Someone caught him with an AK on full auto and the muzzle climb painted a line of 3 shots on his hip - stomach and shoulder. It amazed me that they could save someone in field conditions like that. He would go to the pool in the summer with speedos on and you would see the women looking at his scars not sure what they were and then if he turned and they saw the exit wound scars in the mirrored pattern up the back side they would actually go pale and some left. It was kind of mean for him to enjoy shocking them.

That color therapy is interesting but does not do much for me. I have heard that pink will drain aggression so they use in in mental hospitals and jails.
I will wear light amber glasses when I am glassing a slope hunting but I find I get tired fast looking through them.
This may sound a little sicko but there have been some times I could not concentrate to
read a complex document and understand it because the pain was distracting and it would help to reach over with my right hand and pinch my self or twist my thumb. I can't explain why more pain would help you ignore another pain but it seems to help especially if the secondary pain keeps changing.

hcross, give the Imitrex a try. I had migraines for 25 years, so bad that sometimes we just had to go to hospital and get knocked out.
I finally got a doctor who also had migraines and was willing to work with me. I take zoloft and a beta blocker which have almost totally stopped the migraines. On the occasion when I do get them, the Imitrex is a miracle. Used to be injections, now it's a nasal spray, nothing to it! I thank God for a woman doctor who didn't just blame the headaches on PMS!

Gravid, read the second link I gave up there...the accupressure one. I swear by the toothache pressure point. It also works on extreme gas pains where you are doubled over. To relieve stress, run just over your right breast/chest bone lightly. Pinching between the thumb and first finger is the lower abdonimal/tooth areas. There is a chart for feet too. All areas of the soles of you feet connect to certain parts of the body. I swear by that too. Read up...thats a good site I found (I saved it in my favs, myself )

kraftdinner - I get a vivid imaige of yellow macaroni and cheese every time I see that name. I have just started on this new stuff. Never asked for pure codiene. In fact I did not ask for Hydrocodone by name. I just asked for something that would be safe to take on top of Ultrams if they were not doing enough - which they don't one or sometimes two days a week. It is an inconveniance.
I see a state
worker the 14th to help me get some work. They have a program to help disabled find jobs and it will be more important to be able to function every day if I do that. I was doing about 25 hrs a week at a small proto shop near here but he went under real fast when things slowed down a few weeks ago. It was easy work running CNC lath or mill, and if I needed time to ship auction stuff or what ever I had my own key and could flex time. I just don't want to waste my time being offered $8 or $10 dollar an hour jobs. You can make $8.50 an hour here as a closer at McDonalds.
Hepburn will look for sure. I am looking a lot of this thread up - have bookmarked them already.

It all started when krs made a hole too wide at the range. I mean not a flyer but an oval.
The shame was devastating. Should he chuck that sheet like a golfer fudging his handicap? What did this mean about the foundations of his manhood. Would people bid on his stuff anymore? Maybe he did on purpose as a subconsciece destructive act. Did it involve his Mother or was it directed against his Father. Could he work it out if Baduizm had not taken the shrink side of the couch and stuck him against the wall? Who was paying for this session anyway? Film at 11:00.
Night all I'm getting silly.

I haven't heard of anyone reacting to Imitrex. Supposedly, it will cause an increase in heart rate, but I've never experienced that. If you do have any heart condition, your doctor may not prescribe it. But do ask about it. You can't imagine what a difference it has made in my life-no more curling up in the dark while everyone else is out enjoying themselves!

I find this a facinating thread. I've had neck, shoulder, back pain for 10 years...been to lots of: doctors, nurologists, physical therapy, chiropractors...etc...taken all the drugs..had botox injections, etc. etc. Also used booze for many years -- alcohol works great for back pain, but I was drunk all the time. I quit drinking 7 years ago -- I perfer the pain to the hangover and strange behavior. For me, sober is the way to go. My mother was recently told she has terminal cancer and was given Vicoden for pain. She totally lost her mind and turned her into a blabbering, semi-comatose. The dose has been reduced and we hope to get her back to this world soon.
Recently, I started learning about posture, movement, and relaxation with a teacher of the "Alexander Technique" -- Now - after 4 weeks -- I have almost no pain and move like a ballet dancer. It's totally unbelievable...

The problem with the drug, Vicodin is that tolerance can develop and
in order to get the same relief from pain, an increasing amount is
necessary. I know of a case in which a teenager went to a doctor,
complaining of headaches and was prescribed this medication.
This was the beginning of the end, so to speak. Several months later this
individual was seeing twenty five
different doctors in order to
acquire the necessary amount of the prescription to relieve their
"pain."
I just want to suggest that if you have not already tried it, a shot
of cortisone in your knees might work. My bad ass mother in law
gets these shots and unfortunately for me, it keeps her in motion.
I have very little regard for the medical profession. If they can't
even relieve pain, what good purpose do they serve?

I should add,
They generally serve no purpose. I haven't
seen a doctor in over 20 years and will
never voluntarily seek one out.
I have a bottle of asprin and a bottle of
good scotch and a shotgun. That is all the
medication that I will ever need.

You got that right hjw. If I hint around to the doc about something a little stronger than Darvocet, then she thinks "drug-seeking behavior". Well hell, what if I am seeking drugs?? I want something so I can actually sleep all night without this awful pain in my back. You can bet that some of those docs sure don't go without what they want for themselves. You're prolly right about the aspirin, the booze and the shotgun - pretty bad though when we have to resort to that because these "professionals" who are supposed to help us won't help us. I've got some Absolute vodka here at home, but I'm tempted to go and get something else today and try it later today. Meanwhile, I had better get back to my transcribing (which doesn't help my back and shoulders any either).
lofsness - Can you tell me any more about that Alexander technique? I'll check back here after while.
