Linda_K

Remember, it was your poem that led us astray.

Now, the topic is divorce and women's inability to cope financially... especially
if they are nearing retirement age and are dependent financially on a man.

Well, I'm married and would be unable to cope financially without my husband. I'm sure desperation will be an impetus to my creativity, though.....

If not...well, I still need to lose weight... There's always a bright side, no?

The topic is that there are many women who get divorced and enter the workplace with a relatively late start. When comes the time that they might otherwise be eligible to retire from their job/career they find that they do not have sufficient time to gain the full measure of their retirement system. Because of that they cannot afford to retire and are thus forced to continue working.

Personal responsibility Helen...not blaming others for one's self control being compromised.

I don't know the divorce laws in states other than CA., but there a women who divorces would be entitled to 1/2 her husbands company retirement plan, 401K plan, 1/2 home ownership, 1/2 savings, and 1/2 of etc. Plus a woman who's been married and not working for over a period of 20 years is also entitled to spousal support for 1/2 the period of time she was married. If, in a divorce, she settles for less, that's her choice.

So, IMO, while the article does present us with issues to think about (and hopefully young woman will consider some of the circumstances they may one day find themselves in) I don't see it necessarily means that women would be forced to continue working past her normal retirement period.

Of course, this only applies to CA., woman and doesn't take into consideration that divorce laws are constantly changing. That's why, IMO, a woman needs to do what she can to provide for her current and future needs.

Edited to add: She can also draw her share of his social security retirement benefits too.

My mom has always told me never to become financially dependent on a man. She's in that situation and luckily my dad is great, but he won't disclose any financial details to her and she worries about something happening to him.

My financial picture would probably be a little better at this point if I didn't have a man... they're expensive! (But worth it!)

Completely misguiding. A woman divorcing in California, as well as in a majority of the states after TWELVE YEARS OF marriage MAY BE entitled to half of THOSE THINGS, but if the marriage does not continue for that long she not be so entitled although courts weigh each situation separately and MAY award such for the WELFARE of the woman.
