Auctions and the IRS wants your Social Security Number.
Well if you do not know, now you will. In case you might be trying to earn a little money under the table, and of course I am sure no one would do that. I am told that there is a new gig that ebay is working together with Equifax Secure, Inc. to provide social security numbers to the IRS, child support enforcement agencies, bill collection agencies, personal information brokers and marketing companies. Also will be used to keep up with the amount of sales you make. At first I am told from an inside source Ebay was going to require that all members list their social security numbers with them and may still do so in the future. When they tested the market response and found a very unfavorable response to all of us providing our social security number they had to get creative. So they struck a deal with Equifax Secure, Inc. that will subtlety start off as posing as a "good Samaritan" personal verification service. See: http://pages.ebay.com/services/safeharbor/safeharbor-verified.html .... this way people will gradually be duped into providing their social security number, unknowing the real purpose it will be used for. So like a good little sheep please provide your International personal Tracking number, I mean Social security. Did you know that it is actually illegal for any agency other that Social security, your employer and social benefits office to require you to provide your SS#, but we sheep unknowingly or just don't care, provide this number that is used by big brother and corporate entities to track all of your habits and activities.
Remember that Ebays new top gun lawer was a G'man.
This information is provided to me by an inside source who wishes to protect their identify due to fear of retribution.

I. for one, would quit eBay immediately if giving out my social security to them became required. I don't give out that to ANYONE, other than the ways you named above. And if all of the auction sites did this, I'd find another way to make some beer money. Sheese!

I was waiting for this. That little ID tag that credit bureaus and the IRS just LOVE is going to bite is the butt again. I figured pretty soon that the IRS would require eBay to report all the SSN's they earned commissions from. IRS leans on eBay and eBay squeezes us...right out of the auctions if we don't comply. SHEESH!

In the previous post it mentions it is ILLEGAL to require you to give them your #SSN. As a federal employee we are reminded of this every year in yearly classes that we are required to attend.

Giving your social security number to ebay or anybody else just makes it easier for them to use it. You don't have to give it out, but, if Anyone really wants it, it is no great trouble to find that and most anything else about you on the internet!
I know, it's spooky, but it's now a fact of life and there's not much anyone can do about it. The future might get a little scary, so I've got a cave, in the Ozarks, staked out if I ever need it!!

A couple of you said it's ILLEGAL for a company/entity to demand your SS#. In what cases would this be illegal??

Well, from my understanding that if a person holds a yard sale, they are not required to report the sales...right? It is one thing to buy wholesale and sell retail but to sell one's items is another thing. Also, are you aware that your deceased relatives, friends and other loved ones who passed away before sometime in 1999 is accessible from the Social Security Department under the Freedom of Information Act? Check out www.ancestry.com for the link to the SSN's! What a site to see! It is open to all you don't have to join the group. You can even send for photocopies of the SSN applications! You don't even have to be an authorized person to receive the photocopy! My problem (among many with this) is that "famous" people are not on the list to me that is discrimination! My loved ones are just as important as anyone else!

Sorry folks, if anyone actually tried to sign up, you will find the social security number is absolutely optional. You can either give that or your driver's license number. This is not for IRS, although IRS probably already knows who you are through ebay. If not, they will one day.

Well I actually tried to sign up once without a Driver's Licsense number and once without a SS# and got kicked to a screen that stated that I must photo copy and mail them my state ID, DL#, etc....... in order for them to verify me.
But if you pay for eBay on your credit card the IRS can probably track you from there.
If you have merchant accounts they can definitely track you!
