Hi Nathan,

I thought I'd start a new topic so that it wouldn't get lost in an unrelated subject. I'll post my question last night and your answer this morning underneath this.

The differences that I noted between IE and Firefox browser page loads, is that Firefox starts to show the page as it's downloading. All the little graphic icons reload almost everytime, and it seems those items take up Firefox's time.

So while they both seem to take a bit of time to completely load, at least you can start using the page almost immediately when Firefox is the browser. With IE, all you're presented with is a white page (under the Welcome, xxxx bar) with Done indicated in the lower left corner, and you can't do anything until the fully loaded page appears.

One major snag that I did notice, when I was preparing a new auction for launch, was that Firefox did not present the Full Preview correctly. There were double spaces after every line. At first I thought it was my HTML, so I spent at least 20 mins trying to figure out what was wrong.

Finally, in frustration, I closed the Firefox browser, opened IE, and went through the new listing process again. With the same HTML description copied, I checked the Full Preview and all the spacing between text lines were just fine.

So, out of curiosity I opened Firefox, clicked on the new listing I was having trouble with (YOUNG GIRL with MEDALLIONS Miniature Fancy SCRAPBOOK) and the same thing happened -- huge spaces between the text. In IE it's still fine. The auction title I listed above will launch in 1 hour, so you might still be able to see if you can re-create what I'm talking about.

So anyway, although Firefox seems to speed things up quite a bit, I don't want to use it if it's going to mess up the Preview. I'd never be able to trust it, or my HTML.

Hope that made sense,

Terre
PS - Sorry this is so long. Still wish we could preview our posts.

My original question:
-----------------------
As for slowness, I went back to the Control Panel, and clicked on All Closed (to see my new 100 list), and it took a full 2 mins and 11 secs for the page to load. Same amount of time as wanting to view only 20. And the same slowness happens when I want to launch a new listing or even a relist. It takes FOREVER to load the pages. Even a refresh is agony.

Why is that? I have a pretty fast satellite connection, and my temporary internet files cache is not overflowing. I don't seem to have this slowness on other sites, so I'm wondering why this seems to be an ongoing problem.

Any ideas?

Terre

Your reply:

Hello Terre,

If you try using a different browser, do you get the same slowness? Or does it work better for you? Please try using a different browser, such as Mozilla Firefox, and let us know whether or not it gives you the same problem. Also, does this always happen for you, or does it only seem to happen sometimes? (If only sometimes, is there any pattern to it -- like a specific time of day?)

Regards,
Nathan

Hello Terre,

Unfortunately, it does not appear that it is the preview that is messed up in Firefox. Rather, from what I can tell the listing itself will look like that when viewed in Firefox. Different browsers can display the same HTML code in different ways. In this case, it looks like the HTML code that you are using will add those extra spaces when the listing is viewed in the Firefox browser.

In an unrelated problem, it looks like the listing failed for references to checks and money orders in the listing description (now a banned payment method on eBay). Please remove the reference to checks and money orders from the listing description prior to relaunching. Once the listing is active, please take a look at it in Firefox so that you can see how your buyers that use the Firefox browser will see the listing.

Regards,
Nathan

Man, talk about the last hour having gone to h*ll in a handbasket!! Lost my satellite connection, and now I'm stuck on dial-up. *sigh*

You posted just as I was attempting for the 4th time to get the "Medallions" auction launched. I could not figure out WHY it kept coming up with the Error 240. There were absolutely no reference anywhere to checks or money orders. None.

I originally launched it as a new listing and my preferences for payment only have PayPal checked. I don't know what the problem was.

"Different browsers can display the same HTML code in different ways."

You AREN'T KIDDING!! I had no idea that Firefox destroyed HTML that way. I guess I'm going to have to do some research, and find out how I can make it compatible with both browsers.

Check out the difference between IE vs Firefox for any of my auctions. Firefox is simply atrocious. I think I'm going to revise to put a notice at the top of each auction.

If you know what the problem is, and/or know of a solution, I'd love to hear it.

Anyway, I'm rambling.

Thanks again Nathan,

Terre

I'm goin' nuts. I found the old phrase referencing checks and money orders. Thought I had purged them all.

The rest of my rant stands. [edited to switch auto smiley's]

PS: Really do need a Preview Nathan.

Hello Terre,

I'm not sure what is causing the specific problem with the HTML code, but I did see quite a bit of code that is unusual. What method are you using to create the HTML code for the listings?

Nathan

Hey Nathan,

I meant to come back in and say what I found out but I got side-tracked and forgot.

I went to the Photos/HTML community in eBay, and they told me that Firefox was balking at my Cambria Math font.

As far as the scrolling to the right goes, their consensus was that my payment instructions should have a forced line feed a few times. Actually, that issue didn't really seem to be a big deal in Firefox.

I revised the 3 auctions again (that don't have bids yet), deleted all references to Cambria Math, and now they look fine in both browsers.

I've learned my lesson, ALWAYS preview the auctions in both browsers.

To answer your question, I use Listing Factory that has a WYSIWYG way of designing the auction page. For the life of me (about a year ago) I couldn't figure out why a particular portion of my own HTML wasn't working, and that program solved it.

I will admit that some of the HTML that this program creates seems to be more than necessary (lots of font references, and other things) but it pretty much works, and so I'm not complaining.

Thanks for your concern Nathan. It is appreciated.

Terre
