So i did what ebay said and spent the afternoon taking photos at the 1600 x 1200 setting instead of 640 by 480. Go to upload them to vendio and they come up as failed uploads because they are too big.
So what am i supposed to do to ensure compliance? There is no setting in between the two. Just bigger.
Thanks for any help. Hopefully the whole photo session wasn't a waste.

Hello Susan,
That just means that the file size is too big, the actual dimensions are not an issue. That said, we now need to discuss how to get your images into a good file size so that they retain their clarity and still load quickly for the buyers (too many files right at the 1MB each size limit could slow the page loading.)
Do you use any kind of software for editing/cropping pictures ever?
Most have the ability to manipulate the file size without losing the dimensions you want (though 1600x1200 might be a little too big, as you'd want your buyers to still be able to view the images at their full size without having to scroll around the page just to see it all.)
Personally I use the free Google photo management program called Picasa. When you select a group of images from within it you can export them out and resize them in the process, both for the file and dimension sizes. There is a setting called 'Image quality' when you export and I set this to 'minimum' - which looks the same on your computer screen, it just cuts out the data you would otherwise use when printing photographs.

Hi Christopher,
I do use Picasa for my editing, although I have to admit that a great deal of it's options and capabilities are a mystery to me.
I will play with it using your instructions.
Thanks very much.

Okay, first question: Do I do the export thingy before or after my usual editing of cropping, fixing contrast and / or sharpening.
second question: where it says resize to, there is one number, not two, so i am not sure what to use. And does it make a differene what setting i started out with on the camera?
Sorry if I seem dim-witted, but when it comes to this techno stuff...well i guess i am. lol.

When you export you will see two things you can change - the image size and the image quality. The size is the one you set by number and this one is up to you and if you like the size of your images now you can leave this on the original size.
The image quality one is the one you want to change to say 'minimum' - which will cut down the size of the file.
What I usually do is export them to a folder on my desktop, then upload my images by pointing to that folder. When im done I just delete the folder since I still have the originals in picasa.

Thank you, Chris.
I guess I am still confused about changing the image size...i get keeping original size.
but how do i know if i am making them bigger or smaller when there is only number on the slide for changing it? the numbers all seem to correspond to the various "high x wide" numbers, but if I choose say, 640 on the scale, does that mean high or wide? or niether? or the longest edge maybe?! (Did I just figure it out as I was typing the last option?!)
You don't have to change the image size if you don't want to - but if you did want to, the slider should be telling you what the max pixels are for any side. Editing it will resize the image so that is the largest size for the height or width - whichever is greater.
