I plan to only use AW image hosting beginning in April.

When I went through the process of finding out what it takes to merely attach an image to an auction via HTML, the following questions came up.

1. You have a statement on the top of the page that contains the HTML:

If the auction you're using has a picture URL box, you should place the following line into it if you can:

http://www.auctionwatch.com/images/cleardot.gif

a) What is this .gif and what does it do?

b) How does it differ from http://pics.ebay.com/aw/pics/dot_clear.gif?

c) Is there a fee charged for using it?

2. You also have the following statement:

The code below MUST be inserted as-is. Users bypassing the code below risk image and account deletion without notification.

And in the code you supply, right before your advert, is the following HTML:

<a href="http://imagehost.auctionwatch.com/bin/index1.html?adid=1755202938"></a>

What - exactly - is this supposed to do?

I'd appreciate some honest, technical answers.

Thanks.

Hi kahml,

The cleardot.gif is simply a clear pixel - it is a placeholder that will trigger the eBay camera icon, since the actual image URLs will be inserted into the item description field. There is no fee for using this URL.

As far as the URL before the ad goes, I am not sure what that actually does - I will have to check on that and get back to you.

Thanks,

Diana

Hi kahml... regarding the second issue, that's a leftover link from the old days when we used to include banners in listings. We don't do that anymore, and that link is unneeded (as you can tell from the HTML, it's essentially invisible/nonfunctional, since there's nothing between the <a> tags). I'm putting in a change request to have it removed from all generated imagehosting code; look for it to be gone later today or tomorrow.

Thanks for pointing this out!

I appreciate the fast response on this one.

Of course, the reason I'm going to image hosting only is because of the fiasco with auction launching this past weekend.

Now, I just saw the announcement about the problems with image hosting.

I have to really wonder if this site is the place I want to use to generate revenue.
