Does AW have anything that I can use to add to my image URL that will not allow others to copy my images to use in their auctions?

Hi Idnyc,

The best thing to do in this type of situation is to use a graphics program to watermark your images with your eBay or AW user name. That will cut down on people trying to copy or use your images in their own listings. Unfortunately, that is the only available workaround.

Sonya

OK. Is there a way to do all my pictures at once before I upload them or do I have to do them all individually? As a future suggestion, can anything be developed at AW for this problem that I can use while I'm creating a listing in Sales Manager or a preference in my account? Thanks.

Hello,

You can upload in bulk, but if you are editing an image you'd have to do it individually in a graphics program. The other thing you can do is rename your images every once in a while and upload them under their new names -- this works well if the same image is being used in different auctions.

Thanks Sonya! I did some investigating prior to posting my question and found a code that I just added to my default text to disable right-click on my images for those people that right click to save pictures. I know it's not foolproof but will help minimize the temptation of stealing my images. I needed something right now until I figure out how to encrypt my name on my pictures. I launched the auction just now to see if it worked and it did. I think you should offer a variety of these codes to your customers...each one with different hidden messages to sway the lazy theives!

Greetings idnyc,
Would you share the information you found on right clicking to prevent copies of your images? I too work very hard to create my own photos and have found several of my photos lurking on other eBay auctions. Thank you for any info. you can pass along to your fellow hard-working sellers.

I'd also be curious although I have not had a theft problem. I was under the impression that you could no longer include any executable code in auction listings on eBay.

Hello,

There are a lot of scripts out there that will still work on eBay. Just do a search for 'right-click disable' on Google, and you'll find dozens of them.

Thanks Chris for the helpful information. I went to Google as you'd suggested and found the perfect solution. This is a good one because it doesn't even give you a rude message when you try to copy an image. It just does nothing! Here is the script if anyone else is interested. Place the following code into the head tags of all the pages you want to disable. Don't edit the code in any way or it will not work. Good Luck!

<script language=JavaScript>
<!--

//right click script - no warning -

var message="";
///////////////////////////////////
function clickIE() {if (document.all) {(message);return false;}}
function clickNS(e) {if
(document.layers||(document.getElementById&&!document.all)) {
if (e.which==2||e.which==3) {(message);return false;}}}
if (document.layers)
{document.captureEvents(Event.MOUSEDOWN);document.onmousedown=clickNS;}
else{document.onmouseup=clickNS;document.oncontextmenu=clickIE;}

document.oncontextmenu=new Function("return false"
// -->
</script>

Hi cta,
Sorry I did not answer your question...I didn't return back to the message center after my last post. I am glad you found one that works. These are not fool-proof, basically for the beginner not to copy them. Some of the more experienced computer people will find a way to copy them. Whichever one it is that copies is still violating the rules of eBay.

Please be aware that disabling right click does little to discourage someone that really wants your image. All you have to do in that case is view the page source, find the URL of the image and open a browser page with that image and save it. Watermarking your image is the best way to prevent image theft.

I use Thumbnail Refinery, a $25.00 program from slideshow-refinery.com that does watermarking in BATCH mode so you don't have to waste time watermarking each image.
