We have 48 auctions on Ebay. One of those auctions has almost 500 hits. We know that this couldn't possibly be right. Would you know why this is happening, and if it is something to be concerned about?

Is it something you are relisting on eBay? If so, the counter doesn't get reset. You can reset it yourself -- please go to Image Hosting and click on the edit/reset counters link. Locate your item in the list and when you find it, you can reset the counter.

No, it isn't a relist and now it is up to 700. It is the strangest thing. We are just wondering how this can happen to one item and if this is going to cause a problem somehow.

It's probably just being viewed a lot. If it is a simple counter, then every count is being counted. You can alter that in the same place I directed you to. We are not having any present issues with counters.
